Children's Taiwan flag design painted over by council ahead of beef industry event

A family is outraged after Taiwanese flags were painted over by council on children's artwork on a bull statue erected along Rockhampton's Riverbank.

Students from various schools in Rockhampton, in central Queensland, were asked to paint six bull statues as part of a joint initiative by Rockhampton Regional Council and Beef Australia for this week's biggest cattle industry event in the country.

One of those bulls was painted with barramundi-shaped flags by students at North Rockhampton High School.

Taiwan-born siblings, Amber Jun Xie and Iu Ting Xie, painted their country's flag on the bull's body.

Stepfather Lawrence Downing said his children had done "a great job".

"They were asked to paint their culture," he said.

The bull was picked up by council officers on April 30.

Just days ago, it was erected along Rockhampton's Riverbank for this week's Beef Australia.

The plaque reads: "This bull celebrates the cultural diversity of the Rockhampton community".

But the student's two Taiwanese flags — one painted on the front leg and another on the rear of the other side of the statue — had been painted over.
Cow sculpture painted with fish designs showing flags of the world, but with Taiwan flag painted over in blue by council.

The council's department, Advance Rockhampton, has taken the blame for covering up the bull's Taiwanese flags.

"Advance Rockhampton made a decision to change one bull statue on display in Quay Street in line with the Australian Government's approach of adhering to the one-China policy," general manager Tony Cullen said.

The People's Republic of China claims Taiwan as its territory, however Taiwan operates like a separate country with its own constitution, parliament, and currency.

The Australian Government does not display Taiwanese flags, however there is no federal directive to state or local governments about what they should do.

In recent years, China has emerged as increasingly important for Australia's beef industry and is one of its biggest export destinations.

"We highly value the relationship with all of our international trading partners and the opportunities they present for our region," Mr Cullen said.

The two students' mother, Amy Chen, said her children were "very sad and disappointed" by the council's decision to paint over their flags.

"It's a free country in Australia, so they [her children] feel a bit shocked their culture cannot be showed in public," Ms Chen said.

"They can't do that — it's wrong to do that."

Mr Downing reiterated his family's anger.

"There was a Brazilian flag and a Japanese flag but their flag — a Taiwanese flag — was covered up," he said.

"It's like a slap in the face — what message are they [the council] sending to them?

"You can't tell me a group of Chinese delegates are going to be upset by two Taiwanese flags in the shape of a barramundi fish.

"The council should just say, 'no, we can't do this'.

This week Foreign Minister Julie Bishop warned China against trying to exert pressure on private companies.

China had written to Qantas — and dozens of other airlines — asking them to refer to Taiwan as part of China.

In February, a Sydney waitress claimed she was fired by a Chinese restaurant for referring to herself as "Taiwanese".

The council said Beef Australia was not involved in the decision to cover up the children's flags.

My wife teaches Chinese at an international school. There are a mix of Chinese and Taiwanese teachers. Each year, every teacher has to organize a performance of their students that they put on in front of the whole school. At each grade level, there are two teachers who each take one class at that level. So, there are two performances at each grade level. My wife's friend teaches upper primary. Like my wife, she's Taiwanese. The other teacher at that level is Chinese and is new. Weeks before the performances were to happen, the Chinese teacher approached the Taiwanese teacher and asked to see her script so she would have an idea of what a school performance should look like.

You should already know where this is going.

Historically, the more experienced teacher at a grade level gets to have their performance for the whole school before the less experienced teacher. The Chinese teacher should have gone tomorrow, but last week said her students were as prepared as they were going to be and pleaded for the opportunity to go first. The Taiwanese teacher said sure.

The whole school got together this afternoon to watch the first performance from that grade level. The Taiwanese teacher was surprised, but really shouldn't have been, that the entire performance was word for word her script. Even the lines that had been specifically written for the low-level students, of which none were in the Chinese teacher's class since she was less experienced, had been included and given to proficient students where they sounded very awkward.

Now the Taiwanese teacher is torn between pretending it never happened and going on tomorrow with the exact same performance in front of the whole school or going to admin and throwing the Chinese teacher under the bus. Unfortunately, there's no paper trail. The Chinese teacher asked her in person to see a sample script and the Taiwanese teacher just shared the Google Doc. The Chinese teacher, if called out, will just say, "Oh, I thought she was giving me an extra script! I had no idea she was also going to be using it!"

But really the Taiwanese teacher should have known better.

So is the Thief Teacher not going to be there long? Seems like it’s a pretty dumb idea to do a lovely thing when you’ve just started working there. Even if it’s just a year it would suck if any time she asks for help the more experienced teachers tell her to go gently caress herself.

Chinese teacher never plans on leaving most likely. It's a plum gig. The Taiwanese teacher sent an email to the director about how her hard working students, who spent weeks finely crafting the lines of the performance themselves, were the victims here and they were in tears watching the performance today.

What's going to happen is exactly what I said. The Chinese teacher will get called in, she'll feign ignorance, and there will be no follow-up. She'll then be nasty to the Taiwanese teacher until she gets fed up and goes to teach in Singapore or something. Until then, the Taiwanese teacher will do what all of the other Taiwanese teachers do: never, ever share materials with their Chinese counterparts.
