Say I want to invest in a Russian oil company. This company, and it's owner, are both under economic sanctions by the United States. If I give this Russian company $20 million to build a new oil refinery, and the Treasury Department finds out that I've wired $20 million to this company in Russia, they not only can charge me with a felony, but they can seize all of my assets to recover the $20 million that is now in Russia. Likewise, if the Russian tries to spend any of the $20 million in the United States, or any other country that has a relationship with the United States, his money can be seized and recovered. A lot of Russian cash gets passed through intermediaries in the Middle East and the Eastern Bloc. If you run the money through banks and businesses in four or five countries, it gets very difficult to prove the cash didn't really come from 'Muhammad al-Muhammad' or 'Josef Novak'. Cutting off this supply can cause trade issues unless you're Russia, North Korea or Iran to an extent and have limited dollar trade. This can still effect your economy. It is unlikely that we will start sanctioning all of Europe though so as long as they remain unified, they have little to fear in defying us. I'll try to dig up the Economist articles but I have a midterm tomorrow as well as a negotiation that's going to involve some yelling so no promises.

I foolishly didn’t consider the US dollar’s importance wrt sanctions, or much of the international aid we provide. But I’m wondering why people would want to listen to us. Is it possible that the world could agree to make the euro the most functional currency? I don’t even know what something like that would take, but it seems like the best way to royally gently caress our economy. This is doomsday stuff and all but we seem to be on that slide. vvvvv yeah that’s what’s bouncing around my brain.

If a credit union offers a lower interest rate on a car loan then Wells Fargo, why get the loan through Wells Fargo?

So if anyone hasn't been keeping up, Cohen created an LLC for the purpose of receiving bribes for trump which he then used to pay off various porn stars for silence and abortions. He funneled almost $5m from a sanctioned Russian oligarch, AT&T (they confirmed they paid $200k for "insight" - they were also working on the purchase of time warner at the time), and a pharmaceutical company among others.
