It seems that el trumpo's people are currently freaking the gently caress out because Avenatti *somehow* found this out and is beaming it to the world.

Because why would a lawyer in a contract dispute case find out about the transaction history of an account used by the other party via discovery.

Oh wait, because it's from the same goddamn account.

Can people just say gently caress off with sanctions levied by the US and do whatever they want anyway?

I feel weird about adoption. I have no basis for what I’m about to say, but will that same parental connection be there if I adopt a baby? Not on their end, but on mine. I’m not sure if I would ever really feel like an adopted child is my child, and I don’t think having that thought in the back of my mind is fair to the child.

This is probably something that everyone who adopts says at some point or anther.
This feeling is totally understandable and you're probably right that anyone moderately sane and well-intentioned has that concern at some point. It's just important to remember that if it keeps you from adopting, it's probably keeping others from adopting, leaving kids to the less sane/ill-intentioned or to just drift in the system until they age out.

A stable, unexceptional household will do a world of good for a kid and hopefully leave us all better off. If you're even slightly open to the idea of adoption, it definitely wouldn't hurt to explore the option further!

Basically, they function as a economic do not fly list. If a country or specific entity (person, corporation, charitable organization) is on this sanctions list, no person or specific entity from the sanctioning country.

Say I want to invest in a Russian oil company. This company, and it's owner, are both under economic sanctions by the United States. If I give this Russian company $20 million to build a new oil refinery, and the Treasury Department finds out that I've wired $20 million to this company in Russia, they not only can charge me with a felony, but they can seize all of my assets to recover the $20 million that is now in Russia. Likewise, if the Russian tries to spend any of the $20 million in the United States, or any other country that has a relationship with the United States, his money can be seized and recovered.

I'm on drink #3, so if that was wrong or incoherent, this is a pretty good breakdown: https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/what-are-economic-sanctions

So what would it take and what’s to stop countries from ignoring our sanctions? Or do sanctions only apply to business the US conducts? I seem to remember the US getting mad at other countries doing business with countries we have sanctions on, but I could be misremembering. If I’m not mistaken though, why not just tell the US to gently caress off?

Again, I'm a little loaded, but most of these countries do business with the US, in one way or another. If Uganda or Sri Lanka decides to help launder Russian oligarch bribe money, they'll get cut out of USAID. If the next door neighbors decide to seize territory, they can't come to the US for military funding and training support.

EDIT: Not that they're aren't ways around this. A lot of Russian cash gets passed through intermediaries in the Middle East and the Eastern Bloc. If you run the money through banks and businesses in four or five countries, it gets very difficult to prove the cash didn't really come from 'Muhammad al-Muhammad' or 'Josef Novak'.

The US controls dollars and therefore, other countries access to dollars and anything done in dollars. Cutting off this supply can cause trade issues unless you're Russia, North Korea or Iran to an extent and have limited dollar trade. This can still effect your economy.

It is unlikely that we will start sanctioning all of Europe though so as long as they remain unified, they have little to fear in defying us. I'll try to dig up the Economist articles but I have a midterm tomorrow as well as a negotiation that's going to involve some yelling so no promises.

Yeah this is why I’m asking about sanctions. I foolishly didn’t consider the US dollar’s importance wrt sanctions, or much of the international aid we provide. But I’m wondering why people would want to listen to us.

Is it possible that the world could agree to make the euro the most functional currency? I don’t even know what something like that would take, but it seems like the best way to royally gently caress our economy.

This is doomsday stuff and all but we seem to be on that slide.

Pretty much. The bank can't threaten you if you don't do business with them. That's where the danger is, if the Third World can get cheap money and aid from China or Russia, and they place fewer restrictions on that money, why shouldn't they do it? If a credit union offers a lower interest rate on a car loan then Wells Fargo, why get the loan through Wells Fargo?

Yeah the worst case scenario is that Iran opens up as a market and every business from every state, country, continent comes in with everything for a HUGE party

It's more like a investment loan at a at-cost interest rate, but with stipulations that the borrower follow a bunch of rules and laws they normally wouldn't.

So if anyone hasn't been keeping up, Cohen created an LLC for the purpose of receiving bribes for trump which he then used to pay off various porn stars for silence and abortions. He funneled almost $5m from a sanctioned Russian oligarch, AT&T (they confirmed they paid $200k for "insight" - they were also working on the purchase of time warner at the time), and a pharmaceutical company among others.
