Assuming that all eight building hexes are likewise height 2, that means I have to stay there, hope not to get killed all the way to death immediately, alpha my way to heat 9 and see if they move again next turn. Unless 1514 and 1515 (the little conduit hexes) aren't as tall. It does maybe free up some movement opportunities for the rest of us in the lower tunnels for this turn, at least, and since I've only taken a couple plinks to draw fire it's it least theoretically possible for me to survive it, it's just not really what I'd have planned deliberately.

The only way I'd like to fight a group of Legion Battlemechs piloted by this level of pilot is with a few stars of Huits or Nagas 4 mapsheets away combined with a star of mechs with stealth armor, 10 jumping MP, low profile, and TAG.

That's me. I'll be heading up in to the tunnel to catch up with anyone else. I'm after you in the turn order anyway so I think you'll get your shot? I don't have any other viable targets next turn I don't think.

A shutdown + knockdown would be nice at least. Actually, important question on that, PTN: we can't jump over standing mechs while in the tunnels, but can we jump over prone ones? I assume if we can jump over protos and vees that we can, but I figure I might as well get a confirmation while it's on my mind.

I think it's because 40k throws a surprisingly wide loop of random zany poo poo, so you can almost always find a part of it you like to put in something else. Years ago at this point I remember making some kind of comment about actually fighting Space Marines because we were technically fighting naval infantry in space (and then PTN referred to them as Space Marines in the fluff. ). I don't try and combine the two, but I can see why people might try on some level. I find Elementals to be kind of stupid and since they're geneitically engineered to be giant walls of meat anyway I'd almost rather they be 40k style cool guys (and gals) in power armor with absurd guns than "fat guy in a robot suit that looks like Toad Man".

It's probably just as simple as having a preference or enjoyment of the 40k "grimdark taken to its most absurd extreme" theme, and so when anything else starts to get kind of grimdark, there's that temptation to start calling for skulls for the skull throne etc. etc. Basically just being enthusiastic about what's going on right now in the game, which is fine.

So with that in mind, I can see how some people would want to shoe-horn in 40k and Battletech, since it wouldn't be a stretch for me to want to shoe-horn in Space Marines (or even Tau type battlesuits) to fill in the role of Elementals.

Heck, the redone art for protomechs has a very, very strong Tau battlesuit aesthetic. Not that I'm complaining, mind, it's a very effective design aesthetic that's leagues better than the original. Maybe doesn't match up quite as well in regards to evoking mythological creature imagery, but it looks like something people might actually design for military use.

Successful Elementals are nearly always deeply unpleasant people. Unsuccessful Elementals nearly all become the Clan version of police officers (or, more typically, hamburger). That feeling of dislike (and possibly discomfort) that you feel is intentional. It's telling that the three most sympathetic and human Elementals in BattleTech were Evantha Fetladral (who threatened to dump Phelan in a dishwasher and otherwise got maybe half a chapter of in-character perspective), Victor Steiner-Davion's black slave, and the Jade Falcon lady from the cartoon who got a grand total of four lines of dialogue. Edit: Forgot the Malthus Elemental that was Kai's friend out of a deep respect for Kai's amazing ability to set off bombs after the two spent a few days trying to knife one another to death in the jungle.
