just a super quick reminder that this dude is allegedly a sex offender.

edit: I think gambino's new video is great but I'm also white so maybe that's bad?

I gave the video a few plays. It's a decent song and an entertaining video. But it seems like it's more spectacle than substance. Hearing the song without the radical and violent video reveals how "safe" and "middle of the road" it actually is--hooks safe for the dancefloor, namedropping gucci. I can't really see anyone over the age of 25 gassing up the song, acting like it's some sort of game changer, expecting people to become WOKE AF from its message. Funny that right under the video is a promotion for his Madison Square Garden show. Gotta wonder how much this rich celebrity will be helping the abused and downtrodden afford his tickets. That's a silly point, but all the hype around this song feels unwarranted.

If I want rap confronting America's insane racial issues, I want something that goes loving hard. Here's a legitimately amazing song by real and talented rappers. Every verse is like a freight train of truth smashing into your loving forehead.

In case you had a busy past few days, Childish Gambino has a new song/video out from the 5th that is jaw dropping, artistic, and will send chills thru you with every listen. Lots of things going on in the video, the internet is alight with interpretation videos, reaction videos I'm curious what GBS thinks.

Here are some reaction vids if you like those if not don't click

I don't get why this is causing so much controversy the song is terrible and the video reeks of attention whoring

Yep, this is better than political, thought-provoking rap.

America treats black ppl bad sometimes and consumerism is bad yeah super original thought-provoking stuff there definitely didn't already know that lol. Not like Kanye has been saying that for years!! Childish Gambino has like one decent beat to his name and he didn't even write most of it.

more so than anything ive seen/heard from kanye for sure, although i dont follow the guy super close so i may have missed something of his that beats the this is america video (in which case go ahead and share it because id be interested in seeing it)

The dock really fucks a case or nerfing it.

Its hard to chat about this and not sound pretentious.

But, as a piece of art can this song be separated from the video? It's pretty heavy on the visual metaphor. It seems like the idea for the visual was first and the song written around it to support it.

Just laughing at the lyrics warriors throughout the thread.

It's great that music, like comedy, is incredibly specific to each individual so everyone can have thoughts!

Also the video really was not subtle or new, but well done. The song is filler bullshit though I'm well aware that could be the point, a juxtaposition.

This is pretty much my opinion on the song as well. The video is pretty cool, but the song isn't all that interesting. It might be that I am not into mumble/trap stuff, but the lyrics fall flat for me.

If I want to listen to some rap about issues in America or the world at large, I would much rather listen to people like Immortal Technique, Killer Mike, Run the Jewels, or Rage Against the Machine.

This Killer Mike video has more interesting lyrics to me and a really cool animation to go with it.

There's plenty of music made by people of color that is specifically designed to have broad appeal.

I think the real problem you have is it hurts your widdle feelings that people out there criticize white people. But you feel free to criticize them for not living up to your standard. The standard where everyone pretends things are fine.
