I hope Rabaul has enough celebratory Suntory on hand for these victorious raiders.

And lol at finding a random modern armored cruiser. That's the Grey I remember.

That's a very low estimate considering all those tanker hits.

The massed Avengers and Wildcats mixed with Hellcats and Helldivers would suggest some mix of escort and fleet/light carriers, if the AI cared about that sort of thing.

Due to a mixup at HQ the Myoko was listed as training in Balikpan and the Katori was marked as a heavy cruiser for combat. Despite constant complaints and corrections from the field they refused to admit the error.

Honestly, Hara's book would probably be incredibly dull in this timeline. Amatsukaze hasn't been seen for over a year now and, even if he did move ships for some reason given it was undamaged last we saw, Shigure hasn't been spotted for the entire LP - literally the only one of the Shiratsuyu-class that hasn't appeared. Apparently it has been languishing in Sasebo port or something, forgotten by Grey (not necessarily a bad thing).

Katori may be gone but her sister Kashima is still raiding. She appears just below Takao in this image:

There's a third sister, Kashii, but we apparently haven't seen her in two years. We haven't seen Hiei or Kirishima in a year and a half, either, which is surprising to me given the amount of action our battleships have seen (neither was damaged when last seen near Darwin). They'd make a pretty powerful covering force for the raiders.

Speaking of, I'd like to claim Kashima as my lucky ship (if that's still possible).

The USMC will surely never hit her pre-set kill limit!

So does Grey have any other older capital ships that might be around? Couple older BB's or Cruisers which might be worth it to rotate into the raider force if they take damaged? And howmany of those damaged ships are likely to end up as sunk later in the month? Good job so far!

And I guess what's the status of your own carriers? At least those that are capable of operations - CV's, CVL's,CVE's that are spread out if any or those in dockyards under repair/refit?

There's nothing wrong with an 18knot cruiser being part of a raider force, the enemy will never expect the IJN to approach so slowly, clearly it will catch them by surprise.

Every other still-floating BB we've seen this year, but there are a few other CAs that we haven't, at least a couple of which ought to be available:
  • CA Aoba, last seen December 1942
  • CA Haguro, last seen November 1943 (heavy fires, heavy damage)
  • CA Kinugasa, last seen December 1942 (heavy fires)
  • CA Mikuma, last seen December 1943
There are also a handful of CLs, mostly Nagara-class. We haven't seen CV Junyo in six months, but she was sufficiently damaged then to probably still be under repair. All other carriers seem to be accounted for.

You poor buggers. Even my hungover crew can deal with this.

I wonder if we can break fifty ships this month?

Another destroyer is seen off in Rabaul harbour.

This is a nice hit.

Another thunderstorm hits Rabaul.

The carriers continue to murder.

These guys slip past the CAP, get their bombs in, THEN get cut to pieces.

I think the Allies were trying another of their base force invasions.

Bad weather is playing havoc with my strikes today.

We can still kill though.

How dare you even think about attacking my most important base?

Trust the Spitfires to ruin a good monologue.

I get it, your planes are better than my planes. That seems to be your only advantage at this moment.

Another amazing day. They are losing so many ships! Today takes us below 4,000 points to autowin next January.

I can't help but wonder if those carriers were supposed to have been supporting this invasion.

Another force sails into Rabaul to be met by our ships.

One of our subs takes a lot of hits.

Brown pants time.

My god, the AI has done something competent and put land based air on Manus!

We bring down two liberators.

I need to do something about this, and fast!

The Superforts perform a BS strike on Saigon.

Followed by a second! The random number generator has come out against me hard today!

We do take one of the bastards out though!

That was a terrible day! I think I've lost more ships today than in the previous three months combined! I'm getting every bomber I have in the region to target Manus, as they allies have finally got a ship through! I cannot allow them to interdict Rabaul – that's what a competent person would do!

Checking my notes, I've actually lost 22 ships so far this month – but it feels like a lot to take in one day – the allies have lost 49 though!

How do they even get people to board these transports?

This goes so well for them. The men ashore are part of the 77th division, and they surrender in the end phase.

The dive bombers get in on the action.

The first air-strike goes poorly.

We lose more fighters.

Grumble.

They have so many fighters now.

I think this was the wrong task force to attack....

The last of the forces for Operation Charnel house arrive – crossing a river and starting a shock attack while on move orders – I thought I had another day before the arrived – the roads must be really good here!

Now this is not all bad – I now know their AV, which is pitiful seeing as this represents 750,000 men, and this is a part of my force attacking. And I was also going to launch a spoiler attack anyway – in the past they have counter attacked to greater loss than my attack, so let see if they follow that pattern tomorrow.

So I've decided I need to invade Munda. I'm loading a division from Rabaul to go do the job.
