Going back to Yakuza 3 and goddamn it’s amazing how much game design streamlined the bullshit over the past decade. The Revelations you need to get new moves require you to trigger a condition, do a specific quick time event, and answer a quiz, and if you fail either of the latter, you have to go back and trigger it all over from the beginning. God loving drat!

I've gotta get something.
I actually unironically miss Revelations, and the dumb, wacky ways Kiryu would learn his big, stupid moves. Not having the thought to smash a man's head in a car door before seeing it done by a woman fleeing a pervert is very funny to me. Saejima carving his into logs that he just carried with him was also funny.

It's weird how many sidequests etc. in this game are skeevy, but they end up just being hilarious because it's Kiryu/Majima being caught in them.

I mean, there's a minigame where you manage hostesses, and the skeeviest thing that happens is a training thing where Yuki constantly shittalks you under her breath you teach the hostesses to be better conversationalists.

Hey! Let's be clear here. You're not buying child porn. You're buying porn for a child. One is clearly worse.

A random thought I had about 0 this morning: I actually feel a little bad about doing Cabaret Club because Makoto is just sitting alone and scared in that warehouse for god knows how long while I run around doing it. At least with Real Estate Royale I was just supposed to hope that the heat on me died down a little so running around doing something else at least made sense. But as Majima I'm leaving a blind girl with nothing to do and nobody to talk to in an unfamiliar place with the knowledge that people are trying to find and kill her while I run around running a side hustle.

My wife said the same thing. The way I justified it is that Caberet Club and Real Estate Royale unlock the ultimate fighting styles and get rid of several blocks on the skill progression tree that you’ll really appreciate for the final portion of the game.

There's a part where your given goal is to "urgently" head back to the cabaret grand. It even has super dramatic music playing as you're supposed to sprint through Sotenbori.

I spent like an hour+ going in and out of sunshine writing radio postcards instead.

You don't need luck. You just need your manly conviction, your fists, an inventory full of Toughness Emperor, and shirts/suit jackets specially tailored for dramatically tearing off.

Man, the original Yakuza is pretty rough to play these days. I bought a copy because it was quite cheap and figured why the hell not (and the PAL version even has a 60Hz display mode, which far too few PAL PS2 releases had!) but I can't see myself playing through the whole thing. The over-the-top swearing in the script is hilarious, though, for all the wrong reasons.

Not that it particularly bothers me to have them that way but if I can do better I should probably do better.

Imagine how much more sad and lonely we would be if not for the hard work of lowtax. Here's $12.95 to his aid.
Where exactly would one go to sell collectors worthy Yakuza things, or get a value estimate? My fingers can no longer manage playing the games, had to give up the Yak6 demo, tried returning to Ishin over the course of a week and within minutes it's like it was arthritis season but for good. In Monster Hunter World I'm stuck to using the less active weapons and fighting games and more I can only do with an arcade stick.

I've got Ishin in the standard box with its manual and the three extra papers it came with, soundtrack CD still in plastic with the extras it too came with, the behind the scenes DVD with voice-actors (the glue on the flap was bad so it's opened), and the Ishin front Famitsu issue of February 27th 2014.

It took me, like, 20 attempts to get 90 on Haruka’s song but karaoke is so fun (and I love rhythm games anyway) so it was fine. It’s sorta weird to me that the Yakuza team can’t straight up copy or borrow the Hatsune Miku song engine. 6’s karaoke is a step in the right direction, though.

6 at least dramatically improves the Karaoke stuff. Sleeping dogs had an underrated Karaoke mini game. I loved how your pitch changed when you messed up the slider.

That’s the best you can do, and it’s the setting I used at the endgame of the hostess storyline. That way you can tailor to the high end requests well enough. Keep an eye out for girls getting specifically requested in the Club Moon area too.

As janky as the original Yakuza is in general, I gotta say I prefer that game's version of the chapter 3 Shimano fight to the one in Kiwami. Instead of having this drawn-out slog where you duke it out with Shimano for 15 minutes, you can just wreck his poo poo in ten seconds.

I know I'm pretty late to this but I just finished 0 and moved onto Kiwami after having not played any of these since PS2. I assumed going in that Majima's story would explain how he turned from an eccentric guy to a full on lunatic, and after getting into it a bit I figured that it'd be something involving Motoko, like she dies and he goes mad with grief or he decides that it's not worth caring about anything anymore because with her gone nothing has any meaning or something along those lines. Instead at the end he's just like "drat a lot of people I met were completely loving bonkers. I really admired them, I should be like that too".
