"Animals" has multiple definitions, some of which include people, some of which don't. You can tell he's using one of the latter definitions because he explicitly said "these aren't people" before the "these are animals." And because it's loving Trump, and the context, and literally everything about it. But thank you for being the second person in four posts to point out that a definition no one was using and has no relevance to the conversation exists.

Trump is a shitass, but that answer was in response to a question about the arrest and deportation of MS-13 gang members.

MS-13 is a gang that was founded here in the States, the only reason why US gangs even exist in South America is because the US deported a lot of them back to their country, whose poor neighborhoods were ripe for recruitment, and they linked up with South American guerillas who turned them into the militarized cartel-like organization that they are today. South American gangs and the violence they breed is the result of America's own making.

Also, it's important to remind people that the number 13 doesn't necessarily denote gang ties. Most hispanic gangs that claim Surenos are represented by the number 13, but it's also a number shrouded in cultural superstition, and there are many hispanic people who have "13" tattoos that have nothing to do with gangs (like my roommate).

I feel like most Catholics don't go to church anyway. I once read an interview with him where he said the last time he went to church was in the 70s when the priest tried to justify the Vietnam War during the sermon. He walked out there and then and never returned. Likewise many, many Catholics did the same thing after all the poo poo came out about the decades long child raping conspiracy.

You could make a good case for much of Scorsese's filmography specifically dealing with his (and other people's) failure to live up to the Christian ideals he admires. From Mean Streets, over The Last Temptation of Christ to Silence.

Catholicism is all about your intersection with Church. Lapsing from that would mean things like ignoring Lent or not going to Christmas mass. There's a ritualistic component that definitely involves going to Church, so it's not really about not just going to church but what not going to church is keeping you from doing.

I mean, I had no idea why there were so many fried fish meals on Fridays (as a teen) until I took note of Lent.

Religious doesn't mean bad filmmaker but it is extremely hard to make a movie that would fall under the "christian movie" umbrella and not be terrible. Not to sound too smug Atheist but evangelical relationship with God is loving boring. God is responsible for all the good in the world, everything that's bad is the Devil and everything that happens is part of some divine plan that doesn't need to make sense but you shouldn't question it. It's hard to have a deep analysis of your faith when you truly believe that you are 100% correct in a way where having proof would somehow be against the point and everyone that disagrees is either bad or hasn't seen the light of your non-argument. It's an entire genre making the argument "I know that I'm right because my gut tells me so" and it's playing to an audience that doesn't require anything more than that and a strawman to be mad at.

Like I'm not saying Religion is an uninteresting subject (quite the contrary), it's just the specific way it's approached in Christian films is almost impossible to make interesting. It's a genre that has no interest in exploring it's subject outside of loudly proclaiming they are right.

I've always been so confused by people talking positively about The Cheesecake Factory. Isn't it just Applebees but with a larger cheesecake selectin? Why not just go to one of those little Cheesecake Factory mall shops that lets you just buy the cheesecake and eat it in literally any other environment? Like, a bench in the mall itself would be far more enjoyable.

Cheesecake Factory food is better than Applebees. It isn't great but they have it all set up in a weird way where even though that menu is huge, the food is always fresh made and not prepackaged. it's this weird elaborate thing where they have thing broken up in to efficient steups and they always the right amount of ingrediants on hand despite that phone book of a menu. The one time I looked into it, it just seemed far more complicated for the slightly above average chain restaurant food that is the result.

I don't go to mass anymore, but I still do Lent. I'm just jaded about organized religion in particular since Southern Catholics are seriously right-wing in Georgia. That and I'm not really that close to a Catholic church where I live. :effort:

I'd probably start going again if I lived near one and lived up north where Catholics tend to be more socialist than fascist.

This is why Catholics create great art and Evangelicals don't. It's hard to make anything interesting when you're self-assured of your salvation.

I also think Catholics tend to be better filmmakers than Evangelicals because they believe evil is man's fault rather than the Devil. That's the type of ingrained self loathing you can work with.

The Devil tempts you, but he doesn't make you do anything, he just shows you the way. It's why I really like The Prophecy. Satan shows up and can only cajole the humans and make false promises, but he's not shown actually being able to directly affect them.
