They could be conveyed and told better but I still think Metal Gear easily has the most compelling and interesting plot of all video games.

I come to Metal Gear for batshit insanity and it has always delivered.

Plot wise I think MGS1 or 3 is the best, just from a structural storytelling and character standpoint. Because uh, that is a low bar in this series.

I'm not arguing that the 45 minute codec conversation into cutscene into codec conversation right before the final boss fight is Kojima's most egregious moment of excess, but I don't understand why my saying the actual plot of MGS2 has aged well is getting this response.

The game came out two months after 9/11 and despite literally having a scene cut for being too similar to 9/11 is more relevant now than it ever was then.

I'm not talking about the ludonarrative flow, I'm just talking about the narrative.

no, text is text, painting is painting, and nothing informs anything and god help you if you screw up metal taxonomy which is why this fails to be sculpture which is probably an opinion that dude holds in earnest, actually

e; this is how you do a hot take: By virtue of being skippable and allowing the player to rush directly to the final boss battles, the 90 minute codec finale of mgs2 is more gamelike than the intro to God of War 4.

Well yeah, all of them do. I would say that unless you’re really into the FOB stuff in 5 then MGS3 would have the better NG+ stuff if only because it has a much wider variety of areas to mess around in.

4 allows you to take your accumulated gunporn and items into NG+ which is neat. 3 also has a decent swath of NG+ stuff and imo has the best array of places and situations to use it all in. 2 ties it all to dogtags/wigs, and gently caress that. 1 has the stealth camo and bandanna and camera. Wooooooo. :geno:

4 at least had the virtue of letting you stockpile ammo before a Big Boss Emblem run so I guess it has the second best NG+

I don’t consider MGS5 to have any NG+ stuff tbh. The FOB stuff is all open to you mid-game and you never play the main plot over again. It’s all NG.

4 also let you play around with wacky weapons like the solar gun from Boktai and the Tanegashima in NG+

AND you can go back and play through the whole game as Otacon who doesn't want that

In Peace Walker the whirlwinds from the Tanegashima blow enemies into the sky where they're caught by Kaz in a helicopter. Unless we're not counting PW postgame as NG+ I don't know how it's even a contest. :colbert:

I suppose I'm forgetting about going back and doing all the tasks or S-ranking the missions with all the much, much better equipment you've developed/stolen. That's definitely a form of NG+ no matter one's opinion on 5's mission structure.

I guess FOB's are more "end-game" stuff where you slowly (very slowly without buying coins) make your way up the development ladder and invade bigger and bigger players.

This is true but also it's a criticism he took seriously after MGS4. You can tell because MGSV's lack of cutscenes wasn't just due to it being unfinished. The opening hospital set piece that taught you the basics of stealth would've been a 20 minute cutscene from MGS2-era Kojima. MGSV indulges his cinema fetishism by making the gameplay look and sound like a movie, rather than making it play like one.

I guess it’s more accurate to say replay value than NG+. Yes TPP and PW have the most replay value by far. You just don’t have to “start over” to do it.

Helim needed to be invisible.
Kojima's game design is frequently genius, but he is evidently more interested in tying the occasional narrative flourish to a single mechanic or sequence than making the whole gameplay experience track with the message and plot at all times.

The latter is by no means an impossible ideal, but ill-suited to the sprawling games he wants to make, and that's fine.

If nothing else I did find the first time through the more tense/scary parts of MGS5 pretty well done. Parts of the intro goes on waaaaay too long of course but if Death Stranding is going for even more horror/disturbing as the trailers make it seem then it really will be.

Of course then I can also get Bloodborne and HZD and Shadow of Colossus remake and a PS4 copy of Darks Souls Remastered after I get tired of getting hacker owned on the PC version.

So I guess you can get invaded even if you’re not on PS+, you just can’t go defend your base in person apparently? Does that mean I can invade other players without PS+?

If I can invade the hints seem to say that another player will only know they’re being invaded or who did it if the invader gets spotted. Am I reading that right?

Back in the day when TPP came out, impatient people used to cheatengine poo poo to make the grind faster. I'm thinking about playing it again, but I've grinded enough for one lifetime. What sort of "hacks", "tips" and "tricks" (cheat engine or not) would you guys recommend to make MGSV more fun the second time around.

Also, an observation: I don't know how many times I've finished MGS 1-3, but even though I loved MGSV, I've only played through it once because of the sandbox/grind nature, and that's kind of sad.

CE the rarer herbs I cannot name. You need thousands to upgrade everything and they show up in about 5 or so places. Do the same for resources to build FOBs. They take forever to build, so grinding resources only adds to the build time.

Don't wear the sneaking suits and go full armor the whole game. FULL MURDER. Wear it for invasions and just destroy/balloon every asset of theirs you see. Always prioritize the mortars, since they can one shot you in rank 7 armor.

Now you know how I don't like to use the sit-down gun, but this morning we just don't have time for mucking about.

If you want to still have a reasonable rate of progression, cheat engine every resource except fuel, and you will get base upgrades not much faster than the intended rate, but not have to worry about bringing an extra sleep grenade you won't use, or going out of your way to grab a plant in the middle of a mission, or whatever.

Man I wish they'd gone with the PW method of your loadout only costs carried weight and GMP.

Kibayasu
Mar 28, 2010

Considering how much you need I’m surprised you can’t steal shipping containers of plants too. But I guess you technically “always” need metal and such for more FOBs (Is there a max number you can have? I’ve only ever seen at most 3 for 1 player) and you only need plants for research.

Just give yourself max resources. The timers for everything (platform construction, higher level developments) staggers your progress enough to feel balanced.

Definitely grab the mod that removes the deployment cost for everything so you can actually use the fun stuff.
