Basically the only reliable way to get through the story mode is to play it four player, because that way at least one of you is guaranteed to win every map.

I am reasonably certain that multiplayer story mode is an option. But it's probably difficult to impossible to map 4 separate controllers to a single keyboard.

Yeah, that was one of the reasons we didn't start with a VS Mode match once we got the ISO/emulator working -- we had recorded a four-episode game on actual hardware, but something was up with the A/V port on the Dreamcast and it super hosed up the video signal we got back, and it ended up being entirely unusable -- when we got things set up with the current arrangement, I couldn't think of a good way to get four players on one (wireless) keyboard without making it a total clusterfuck. I'm going to be testing out a few Bluetooth-connection options and see if I can connect four wireless controllers to the laptop to get some kind of VS Mode going though, we'll see how it goes. We'll be recording our attempt at the Riot Train tonight, but before that (since the timing of The D-Pad's 7th birthday and the release of this lined up so well), we decided to take a short detour and record a little D-Pad + Chill of the first of five parts of Tyson Hesse's Sonic Mania Adventures, which follows Classic Sonic on his return home following the events of Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces. Honestly, the short is INCREDIBLE and I highly recommend watching it to help support Hesse and his team's hard work right here. Even though there's much more blatantly-stolen artwork online, and this logo was the result of weeks of meticulously reconstructing elements of it from scratch and trying to get the look of a bunch of 3D assets correct. Fun. Between Sonic yanking my 4 (the only card I needed) and Amy's 2 to get where he was going, and Tails literally burning all the S cards for no reason at all and for no benefit of his, it seems pretty clear that the game's AI is straight-up engineered to cheat like crazy. Tails' AI just seems hells of spiteful. Like, just wasting the poo poo out of cards so that other players can't use 'em. That Robotnik card thing that keeps happening is weird, though. I wonder if the AI does it just to get it out of the way for the rest of the NPCs, like some sort of hard-coded collusion. Sonic takin' one for the team so that Tails and Amy can pull cards with impunity.

I am almost positive that for some asinine reason the developers could not figure out how to make the AI not a bunch of cheating monsters, so at critical moments, they just botch their roll and intentionally grab Eggman cards. And perhaps the difficulty selector changes how often they do that. That's just about the only way any of this poo poo makes sense, I don't get it, man. Anyway. Here's Fourth Dimension Space. Sadly, I spent a gross amount of money on two PSPs (the second and third versions) and both component and composite cables designed for the PSP, aaaaaaaand... it was super unstable for one, and didn't work at all for the other. And I watched about a trillion videos of people setting up their PSPs with the same hardware we use, so... no idea. So either we end up with super duper fuzzy video that might glitch out at any moment, or we just emulate and live with it. Good news though: we did ultimately fix our sound and control issues as of Part 4!

I"m not sure if you've started recording the Last story yet or not, but hearing you talk in episode 15 about the power ups you missed I'd say the only one you should really worry about Knuckles' item in Aquatic Mine. Otherwise you may find yourselves missing those halcyon days of Crazy Gadget being the most difficult level.
