This just in, painting is bad if no clear message present. Text not allowed on a painting either. All movies must be a single frame, if two hours of story boards and plot is not conveyed, fail.

There are plenty of great painting and great games that have no clear message. Metal Gear has a message and tells it in a very lovely, hamfisted way that doesn't fit the medium and only dumb gamers would enjoy

ImpAtom
May 24, 2007

That's pretty reductive.

Metal Gear has a shitload of hamfisted cutscenes that over-explain the message but it also conveys its story in a lot of little ways. For example it goes out of its way to try to humanize guards (increasingly so as the game and AI capabilities progressed, culminating in every guard having a name and potentially being a recruit.) This is part of its overarching theme of violence having consequences and having impact on the people who commit it. It actively goes out of its way mechanically to discourage you from killing (either by penalizing you points-wise or punishing you with in-game things like the River O' Corpses or by giving you things like the execution of the infected soldiers in MGSV.) The fact that it includes a lot of lethal weapons is besides the point because the game actively discourages you from using them and that emphasizes the idea that killing can look cool but still has a cost.

It isn't a case of either/or. Metal Gear excels both at manipulating the player using gameplay AND having over-explanatory cutscenes.

So hey, is there any cheat protection whatsoever in this game? Has anything bad ever resulted from modding in resources?

Kibayasu

Wow people are fast on the draw when it comes to stealing nukes. I built one for the trophy and disposed of it right after returning to mother base (in case there was a cutscene for it) and I already had a blockade notice. Glad I set myself an alarm.

Definitely not resources or any other single player elements, no. The only cheat protection would be on multiplayer modes like the FOB and MGO but honestly even those were only lightly policed (cheating on FOBs especially was always rife) and nowadays you could probably do whatever you want.

The only time I ever heard of anything being quickly stamped down was MB Coins manipulation, which is like yeah go figure.

I wonder what the nuke populations are like these days. Does Konami still keep track? I know it’ll probably never happen but it would be cool to see that world without nukes ending legitimately for at least one of the platforms.

Best be would be PS3 version as it gets older. (If you could beat the EoL).

I was a big fan of the buffer overflow theory for the PC (because comedy) but it was likely some malicious stuff going on.

Neat. This game is so much better without farming. I avoided modding in GMP for a while so that there would be some kind of feeling of progression and reward with deployments and mission rewards, but even that got absurdly boring once I found out about the DLC weapons they've added since I stopped playing in 2016. Pricy poo poo.

Also, do we give a poo poo about quarantine or is it better to just rush the missions until you get the cure?

Unless you really need to research the next best thing when it starts knocking out people, it isn't a big enough deal to rush missions. You can kick out people for having wrong-speech and put everyone else in a department for research. It will take out your highest ranked soldiers when you do get it fixed, so if you have enough heroism for S ranks with medals or S+ guys, then you should just get it over with.

Most of the missions during the outbreak can be done pretty quickly (5 or so minutes) and even Mission 28 can be rushed somewhat.

I was so focussed on rushing those missions though that I didn’t pick up a whole lot of the story development in that phase, so ymmv if you want to stay immersed in the plot.

So a question has been kind of rattling around in my head for a while but it just kind of clicked that I’m not sure at all. If I’m looking at, for example, a platform with 2 decks with 17 guards on 1 deck and 24 guards on the other, are there actually going to be that many guards walking around or is that how many guards can come out as reinforcements have if I get into open combat? Is the number of active guards on a deck a certain % of the total or something?

The guards you see physically in person on bases are way scarce compared to how many are on paper

I think on the PS3 there was a hard limit of 15 humans on screen at a time, and people started flickering in and out of existence if you somehow managed to get more in the same map. I dunno if it’s the same on the PS4 but I assume something similar is the case.

Well to use a simpler example, the current FOB event shows 26 guards total on a 2 deck medical platform. 12 on the insertion point and 14 on objective point. I’ve farmed it long enough to know that there are actually only 6 active guards on the insertion and only 10 on the objective. Disabling those guards doesn’t suddenly spawn more, only if I gently caress up get into combat and kill some are there ever more coming out. Is there a way to tell how many active guards at the start of an insertion there are going to be on a given platform?

The maximum number of guards that will be on an FOB not including reinforcements during alert status is 8 on the first three platforms and 12 on the final platform

The rest of the count is decoys

Well that makes me a lot less hesitant to steal some fuel and metal from people with full security. 36 guards I can handle with a tranq pistol and sniper rifle. I kept looking at 26 guards on a single deck and going “no thanks.”
