Yeah just imagine the morale working at JCU where you are watching the reef go byebye and all this poo poo blows up as well.

Why ask politicians if a Federal ICAC is required? Why ask priests if a Royal Commission into sexual abuse is required? Why ask mobsters if effective policing is required? Why ask banks if stronger protections are required?

Salim Mehajer's solicitor sister Zenah Osman has been struck off the roll of lawyers for attempting to mislead the Federal Court, in the latest legal drama to befall the Mehajer family. The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal found on Wednesday the case for removing Ms Osman from the roll was "overwhelming" and there was "no evidence" she had learned or changed from her mistakes. A three-member bench of the tribunal found Ms Osman told the Federal Court in July 2014 she acted for a number of creditors of her brother's failed company SM Project Developments "when she knew or ought to have known that was false". At the time, Ms Osman was the director of the Mehajer Legal Group, which employed no other lawyers and shared an office with Mr Mehajer. "It is trite to say that a legal practitioner misleading a court in which she or he appears must be amongst the most egregious misconduct that a legal professional can commit," principal tribunal members Robert Titterton and Linda Pearson and general member Bruce Thomson said. They said the conduct was "perhaps even more reprehensible" when the lawyer involved offered no explanation for their misconduct. "The respondent’s comment, 'I don’t even deserve to be here to be quite honest', in many respects, summarises the respondent’s attitude to and understanding of the disciplinary complaints brought against her," the tribunal said. The tribunal concluded Ms Osman was not a fit and proper person to remain on the roll of lawyers and there was "no evidence" either of mitigating circumstances or "any remorse, insight, or understanding" by her of her misconduct. The law firm acting for the liquidator appointed to Mr Mehajer's company wrote to Ms Osman in June 2014 and advised "as a matter of professional courtesy ... that we have been contacted by a number of persons that you purport to act for who have advised us that you do not act for them". The letter said this was "obviously of great concern". The tribunal said Ms Osman "failed to take any meaningful action" in response to the letter. Ms Osman told the tribunal said she knew nothing about the liquidation and “they needed me and my letterhead. I didn’t even get paid. They lied to me”. "She said that she did not want to act in the matter, as she thought it involved 'some sort of dodgy deal'," the tribunal said. "She admitted that she had been 'very naïve', negligent and stupid. She said that unfortunately, she 'can’t do nothing', which we understood to be a statement that she is not able to correct her past wrongs." Ms Osman said she had stopped practising as a lawyer but the tribunal said her "equivocal answers" - including that she was only sending "short emails" and did "nothing heavy" - "did not assure the tribunal that she had indeed ceased to practise". She was removed from the roll and ordered to pay the NSW Law Society's costs. The lowest-profile of Mr Mehajer's sisters, Ms Osman wrote to Fairfax Media in October last year as Mr Mehajer's lawyer, and claimed he was about to commence "Australia's Largest Case of Defamation" against a host of other media outlets. The case did not proceed.

All this stuff seems really obvious Yeah it seems obvious, but gaming the system makes it difficult to stop, even when all the facts are present. A friend of mine was sued by someone with legal experience and even thought it was clear that they were gaming the system to harass him, it took years to make that obvious and the story hasn't ended yet.

I saw it on reddit a few days ago; essentially there was some literature review (potentially commissioned by a council?) that spoke about not boxing children in entirely on the basis of gender, which turned into "MELBOURNE COUNCILS WANT TO BAN THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE" e: SBS has more info on it. https://www.sbs.com.au/news/no-thomas-the-tank-engine-won-t-be-banned-under-melbourne-council-gender-guidelines The report that sparked the moral panic can be read here: http://csrm.cass.anu.edu.au/sites/default/files/docs/CSRM_WP4_2018_RESILIENCE_1.pdf
