Not to mention the Erebus duel scene. Fuuuuuuuuck Erebus.

I lol'ed at the Hillary supporting navigator in Ashes of Prospero:

quote:

‘I wasn’t seeking permission,’ said Njal. ‘Why is Remeo not here?’
‘I have volunteered for this task, Lord of the Runes,’ Majula replied.
‘Volunteered?’
A crack appeared in the young lady’s facade of indifferent superiority, revealing agitation.
‘The Navigator Remeo thought to forbid me from attending to the pact between House Belisarius and the Space Wolves. Nevertheless, I persisted.’

I love to hate Erebus, but when he's properly written, he's just so drat entertaining. I utterly adore how in Betrayer he completely refashions his plot toward Argel Tal based on a single slipped term from Raum, and seals the Chapter-Master's doom flawlessly via triple-reverse psychology. He's such a radioactive little viper. I really wish they'd release his staline for 8th edition.

I started I Am Slaughter because Dan Abnett, but it's extremely corny so far. The main characters name is slaughter, his men have names like heartshot and frenzy and this is from imperial fists. It reads like Dan Abnett's first space marines book but it's fairly recent.

It's weird.

Yeah, it's a terrible book. It read like it was a really rough first draft, and BL just ran with it. Either that or, due to the issues Abnett was having with BL, it was a "one last book before I'm out of my contract, so here's a colossal piece of poo poo I hammered out over the course of a weekend, so now I'm done with you fuckers."

This was my thought when I read it; there was the drama going on between black library and it's authors. Abnett was still contractually obliged to do one more book and I am slaughter is what he gave them. It's his poorest novel that's been put out, and it's not like he hasn't written space Marines well years before in brothers of the snake. He just phoned it in with slaughter.

I think I got up to book 8 or 9 is that series before I lost interest, and even then it was only because of how much is written about the imperial courts and intrigue on Terra, the main plot was rather boring and the vulkan cameo was dumb as gently caress .

It's not a bad series if you like...download it and ctrl f for the word terra or just read all the palace intrigue chapters. I blew through like 6 or 7 of them on various flights over the span of ten days and I ended up just flipping through till I found scenes set on Terra or with the high lords. It was ok like that.

So at what point does Ravenor go from "Grimdark Professor Xavier" to "Literally just a floating coffin-tank"?

Because I'm re-reading Eisenhorn and he's in Xavier-mode at the end of Hereticus but IIRC he's in floating coffin-tank mode throughout his series?

Holy poo poo how do you guys not like Gav Thorpe? I've just read the first two books of Last Chancers now and they're hilarious and not bad at all. I especially appreciated how the super heroic ex-commisar died in the second book. that was hilarious.

Oh, and I went back and re read necropolis and hoooooo boy. There's a good book hidden under there somewhere, but you can definitely tell that this was before he learned ....anything about how combat or hierarchical military organizations would work. I love the images he paints though, even from so early in the series.

Probably between the Eisenhorn trilogy and Ravenor trilogy. He doesn't become a full inquisitor until after Mallus, if I recall correctly.

No, in the Eisenhorn trilogy he's like, Xavier: spooky-powerful psychic dude in a wheelchair. But in his trilogy he's literally in a tank or something. I just wasn't sure if there was a diagetic reason or not.

Thought you were asking when he got injured, if you are asking about his force-chair, he got it when he got promoted to full Inquisitor rank and someone in the Ravenor trilogy mentions it also amplifies his psychic powers.

I think it's already some kind of highly advanced force-chair in/towards the end of the first trilogy, just not an outright armoured one yet.

I agree with this, when Eisenhorn stops in to say "good job catching that bomber with your face", Ravenor is described as already being a blob of flesh with little more than a mouth slit and a whole bunch of tubes.

The Chair he gets when he reaches his full rank. It's got a bunch of heavy duty psyker boosters and I think some eldar tech built into it; most of the design seems purpose built so he has an easier time wearing his team.

Somebody on Reddit asked if the Alpha Legion had ever replaced another legion's dreadnought with one of their own. Like switched out the sarcophagi or just made an imitation one and switched them out in the heat of battle. I thought it was interesting and very Alpha Legion and it gave me an idea for a trilogy:

Alpha Legion needs a secret that only Bjorn knows as it pertains to events a long time ago he is the only surviving member of. In the 1st book they cause some big gently caress you to the Space Wolves important enough to wake Bjorn and then secretly swap him out (or just make them think he died and was unrecoverable) during the battle.

2nd book is a collection of short stories. Alpha Legion puts Bjorn in a Fang simulation and he thinks he is telling Sagas to a new generation of Space Wolves, eventually getting to the story they need info from.

3rd book the Space Wolves figure out they swapped him/he is still alive. They race to not only rescue him but stop the Alpha Legion from completing their mission.

Bonus this could have something to do with Russ and/or Omegon and could lead to them coming back at the end.

This except it’s a bildungsroman that ends with Russ infected with rabies, chaos, parvo, and mange. Omegon has to take him out behind the barn and shoot him with his father’s bolter to end his suffering (the suffering of being a Spess Wuff, who suck).
