I wasn't complaining, I just explained how their system works by this point. The freebies you get are enough for me to keep up with the single series I read on the site anyway.

So as recommended earlier in the thread, I've been reading a lot of Release That Witch and man, even putting aside the very awkward translations and usual tropes I hate (being reincarnated as royalty, etc etc), I still have a lot of mixed feelings about this.

The stuff I like most of all is all the incredibly detailed and spergy science nerd-outing; the author seems to have thought of everything that a mildly scientifically literate reader might ask, and the results of their scientific investigations make sense. I even had to check the comments a few times to see if someone could explain or justify what was happening, and it all seemed to check out. I especially like when learning science unlocks the true potential of their powers, like when the witch with the power to preserve food realizes that her power is actually control over all microorganisms.

Other things I like: the worldbuilding here has some interesting ideas that also feel well thought out, and I appreciate the effort the author makes to go out of their way to show that the witches are their own characters with distinct personalities and agency, rather than a harem for the very clearly monogamous and not perverted main character.

But wow the politics of this can be iffy at times; at first it's cool because he introduces civil rights and ends witch hunts and does other nice stuff, which is great, but then he starts holding public trials and basically encouraging mobs to call for executions. Then at some point he invades an enemy kingdom but rather than give the captured officials real trials he seals himself in a room with them and then basically plays Saw with them (hell, he even says "let's play a game") where they're slowly whittled down and sent to jail or the chopping block as they fail his tests. Then sometimes he'll assert "even a non-combat witch with a seemingly useless power can best a trained combat witch", and I'm primed to expect that there's gonna be a duel where the witch applies her power in a clever manner to overcome the combat witch--but nope! Apparently the solution to that is to just give the non-combat witch a gun, problem solved!

Anyway it's really annoying but I've gotten this far so I think I'm gonna make it to the end before I get fed up with it. After this I'm gonna read that other one you guys recommended, about a reincarnated peasant girl who isn't Maine.

To be fair that wasn't an enemy country, that was a semi-rebellious city in his own kingdom that was plotting to kill him.

The writing and translation tends to be spastic at time. But at lest the writer is able to keep up the drama and suspense of the coming wars even if the enemy can't really beat gun fire. So far it has been about the only 1000+ chapter web novel that has kept me still reading it, so there is that.

My favorite part of Release that Witch is the author's western fantasy knowledge occasionally shines through in character names like Drow Silvermoon.

if you like the magic + science parts of rtw, you might enjoy the english wn a hero's war. it spends a whole lot of time on experimenting with magic using the scientific method and using the results of those experiments on industrialization. however much like rtw, it is super goddamn dry at times.

Yeah, I've read that one. I actually thought that RTW did the science stuff better than A Hero's War; in the latter, sometimes they'll go into detail, but a lot of stuff just seems to get invented really quickly--the guy invents a thriving university in 3 paragraphs!

"Even if this body of mine is turned to dust, I will defend my country."
Politics in RTW are hillarious, the series honestly has a lot of problems but Magic+industrialization is a trash pile and this is one of the less bad ones and it scratches that itch for me.

I actually enjoy pretty much every part of King's Avatar, the well planned out battles and scamming actually make it work for me, it gets a bit stronger as it goes on as the writer gets better. Honestly for the anime, while it is more condensed actually felt more repetitive because they didn't really explain what was going on and why they were doing the same thing over and over and instead were like yo roll the stock footage of his umbrella turning into a gun again.

On PC it's kinda poo poo compared to others, but it's super super good on mobile compared to basically everyone else.

You can basically follow 1 premium series for free, 2 if you watch the ad daily as well. Anything past that and you will be on the 1 chapter a day train which is still really good compared to most translations.

Update: I tapped out of RTW for now at chapter 600 now that all he's doing is making bigger and better guns nonstop, so I tried reading Resume of a Reincarnated Girl but the translations I've read are even rougher than RTW; I do notice though that more than one group has tried translating it; do any of them do a good job? Because the one I read unironically uses the word "mage-samas" and the following chapters (possibly by a different translator?) were only marginally better.

If it matters I think you were just before RTW finishes the arc about fighting the church and uniting the human kingdoms. There's a lot more magic stuff and less gun stuff after that.

So I started Myrmidon's Ascension, a scifi xianxia quest, which might or might not be of interest to people here. It's about bug people, specifically an ant person who's been sent by her hive to a xianxia school along with a team of eccentric hivemates she's expected to manage. It's still in the character creation voting stage.

All true, but the way this is presented presented in RTW is interesting. Our protagonist doesn't infer or deduce that the church is malign- he takes it as axiomatic that it would be. He is not at all surprised to find the church burning witches- as far as he is concerned that's just what religion is about. He reads like someone who has been raised to believe this and read the entirety of human history through that lens. Which- I mean, I am not at all familiar with what China teaches its children about religion, but I would not be surprised to discover that it was exactly that.

And that's fine, really- it's entirely reasonable to have someone who thinks like that be your protagonist. Where RTW starts to lose the plot a bit is in that everyone else in the story happily goes along with him. He just turns around one day and goes "we're going to break with the church and all established doctrine in order to consort with the literal forces of Evil" and all his advisors and aides- none of whom share the benefit of his 21st century vantage point on the history of societal development, none of whom trust his ability to leave or even like him all that much- just fall in line. There is no sense that anyone in this setting has any sort of real religious faith, or that the church is a fundamental pillar of society and the psychologies of the people residing within it. It is, in a word, unreal. The author, I suspect, has a fair understand of religion as an abstract concept but no experience of the actual emotional reality of it.

To be fair, that's not an uncommon problem in fantasy stories, but it's rare for them to lean quite so heavily on it.

They are now running a paid RTW fanfic contest if you want to potentially get paid for putting way more thought into the setting than the author did

To be fair my parents weren't religious at all (at least when I was a child) so I learned about religion mostly from SF and fantasy fiction and this is pretty much the impression I got.

And I was in the bible belt. :v:

I tried very, very hard to see if that is a transliteration of a term for beer in any real language. It isn’t. :argh: It’s also so inconsistent! Why are walnuts walnuts but the orange citrusy fruit a “feregine” instead of a tangerine?

Luckily it’s relatively easy to infer from context and there’s generally descriptions of new things within a few paragraphs of their introduction, but still...

I'm halfway through Ghostwater. I felt sorry for the gold dragon girl and her attendants. She wasn't actually trying to kill Lindon at first, and the attendants didn't really do anything wrong. And while Lindon was also willing to negotiate initially (Orthos got in the way), he did miss a chance for a non-lethal resolution when he ran inside the second time she confronted him instead of just handing over the Eye of the Deep. Granted, he would probably have been killed by something else shortly thereafter while either wandering around outside in search of the other portal or acting as the dragon girl's lackey (and Orthos would never have accepted the latter option anyway).

This seems mostly intentional on Will Wight's part, though. He seems to be aware that other than Akura Mercy and Suriel, the protagonists aren't really all that good, and the dragon girl's death was definitely played for tragedy.

I.. am not sure? Dragon girl was specifically following Lindon not only because she thought he knew something, but also because black dragon ingredients are worth money, so she wanted to harvest Orthos. The attendants are basically victims here, but there is no real indication she would not have killed him had she taken the eyes of the deep. Or any indication he could have survived without it even if she didn't (and she wanted Orthos too).
