I guess I am just not buying it (especially a few things that happen in the finale). To be honest these last 2 seasons have cooled me some on The Americans. This last season felt like just another season of The Americans until the last few episodes. While I guess that was the point, it caused them to cram in several decisions towards the end (with the only purpose to push the plot forward). Still I liked The Americans. Great acting, great music, and some impressive camera work at times. Quality wise I would put it on the level close to something like Six Feet Under. Sorry to be somewhat negative. Maybe it is my backlash against all the praise I've been hearing about the show this week. The Americans has outstanding moments, but a lot of it is kind of meandering in-between. Mostly it has a really solid baseline. I wouldn't say it's overrated, because it's a pretty unassuming show and it doesn't really get talked about much unlike Westworld which is like the most manufactured PEAK TV show ever made.

Back to the UK/USA television comparisons, both have utter garbage trash on TV that prey upon and are served to the lowest common denominator. The biggest difference I've seen is the UK has a love affair with panel shows that the US doesn't and the UK really loves a lot of vacuum commercials and televised gambling.

I wish we had more panel shows in the US, if only to give more work to great low-level comedians. But we'd probably gently caress it up and just get lowest common denominator comics as the panelists. Though @midnight did a good job of approximating the concept but skewed more to the gameshow side of things. Either way, they'd be a hell of a lot better than all the Hair Jacked and Santsas in the Barn type reality prank comedy shows that exist in their place.

Americans was good but a perfect example of a show needing to walk in with a solid 4 season arc and not getting drawn out longer even if it's a critical darling or whatever. Like it's cool that these actors all got paid for 2 extra years but there were at least two seasons worth of extra poo poo happening in that show that they could have cut. It felt very obvious to me that Nina and Martha were meant to be the points at which things spiraled out of control but instead we ended up with Nina in jail for a season, very clearly to just keep her around and provide a shock death since her whole plot went effectively nowhere in the scheme of things; and Martha should have been the point at which Philip taps out. This season was ridiculous just in terms of the body count that Elizabeth racked up.

Honestly the only political show I can watch anymore is Jim Jeffries. Klepper is ok but it just feels likes doing a diet Colbert impression. Noah, Maher, Bee are all loving terrible brainworm riddled morons and I'd be happy to see all of them go. Double J however is cool and good.

John Oliver has extremely formulaic jokes and irritating forced viral bullshit but I forgive it since the deep dives they do on important but underreported issues are both very informative and unlike what any other comedy-news, and most real-news, show does.

I like the field reports on all of the boring shows pretty much for seeing rightwingers out in the wild saying stuff like "Obama didn't do enough during Katrina." John Oliver is pretty decent for the show's depth but I have to be in the mood.
