Yeah I basically could not be happier about this, guaranteed to produce at least a modest drop in attendance from the kinds of gamers that kept women from being comfortable being gamers in the first place.

I really wish I could understand how the same people can hold the "lol u triggered snowflake get over it" and "how dare you acknowledge feminism I am so offended I am skipping the world's best event as a result" viewpoints simultaneously. Yes I know, cognitive dissonance, but it is still sad.

That said, any events anyone is running or care to recommend to me this year? I decided to go rather late so I'm just looking at event scheduling.

Who? And why do people hate her?

Some lady who read wikipedia articles detailing obvious repetitious poo poo tropes about women in video games and inserted a tiny bit of her own analysis that sometimes was weak as hell. Nerds went apeshit because her videos had pretty good production quality at the time and youtube is even more reactionary so telling everyone basic stuff like why Princess Peach was the norm pissed them off something fierce. Her time has kinda faded though because people where trying to mine outrage on 4chan but failed.

Forget the people not coming, feminism isn't as popular as the internet makes people think it is (look who got elected president), but a lot of smelly necknerds are going to scream liar or nazi or try to make a scene at Gen Con over this; Pizzagate level poo poo. They'll back down when security arrives. I highly doubt this is going to be an epic level poo poo show, but the human zoo is going to be out on display.

Yes, which pretty much says it all

But considering that self-evident statement led to a brief argument with my Only Conservative Friend(tm), I also want to share the story of how I actually made a difference in the world

I dropped "but OCF, cosplay is not consent" into a discussion loosely about cosplay, and he instantly bristled at it and started into a rant about how it is bullshit that women wear outfits like that if they do not want men to look at them and I was like "no, I need to stop you right there--believe it or not, you are not really the problem, as it is the guys who take upskirt shots and grab women and/or proposition them and stuff that we are talking about" and he was genuinely taken aback to learn that his own lascivious behavior basically did not even register on the scale of the issue being addressed.

So for the first time in recorded history I intentionally had a politicized discussion with someone with very different views, and it went well! Wow!

Yeah, it would be inarguably OK if it was just looking. But it ain't always "just looking."

EDIT: and Countblanc is right - the fact that that line so often gets crossed is because enough people default to the "she was askin' for it" line that the people who are the real problem feel emboldened to act inappropriately. In an imperfect world we all bear some personal responsibility for our own safety, but no one is ever "asking for it."

Well literally just looking is not the problem, and I have been around him long enough to know that he really does just look, and/or if he wants a picture he asks to take one. But yes leering at women does always directly accompany the kinds of problems we are seeking to prevent.

I mean this is really why I said something, because I wanted him to think more about the infinite spectrum of harassment even if his first instinct was to side with them.

Hey there is a reason I only have one conservative friend, it takes a lot of my mental energy just figuring out how I can have conversations with him about things like this

Edit: I apologize as this is now two posts in a row where I did not get excited about Gen-Con

The photo thing is weird as a photographer because in a public space (even private events like Gencon are considered a public space) it's legally fine to take photos of anyone at any time as long as it's not something like upskirts or in a bathroom where they have a reasonable expectation of privacy. The Gencon User Agreement/Terms of Service don't even mention cosplay or consent of con-goers at all, interestingly enough.

But of course anyone mad about cosplay is not consent is not concerned with that they're just being piss babies that can't respect social contracts enough to even wear deodorant, much less not be a loving creep.

I'm all for the policy of no touching or being a creep and would tell anyone that's groped to immediately press charges in a heart beat, but I'm not sure if any convention could actually enforce the no photos without permission policy legally (and Gencon should really include cosplay is not consent in their terms of service to both enforce it and show more support beyond just words).

EDIT: Holy poo poo the chuds on Facebook mad about Anita are sharing Jordan "Women Owe Men Sex" Peterson memes in their arguments, because of course they are.

I have been puzzling over the decision to invite Big Bird as a guest of honor. Do they have a hand in designing a game that I am unaware of? Do they have industry experience with tabletop gaming? Right now all I can think of is they have "star power" but I would hope the reason for making her the guest of honor goes beyond that. Could someone with more experience with her work than me please explain why Big Bird is the Guest of honor?

I expect to see you live "tweeting" what goes on to the groupme since I'll be stuck in my booth during any events she does (I assume that will be the case at least).

That is great news about anyone actually cancelling their attendance because of this. I'm supposed to meet up with Derek Guder at Origins to talk about the women game masters analysis I posted last week, I wonder if he'll share any data on people actually leaving when I meet up with him.

I know its not Gen Con, but it's content for the thread. Origins report:

So as usual, Origins was both a fun show and a poo poo show. There were multiple reports of harrassment of women at the show, including of some people fairly prominent in the Board Game media (namely Bebo of Bebold Games and Katie from Katie's Games Corner) and it showed how terrible Origins anti-harrasment policy was since one of the stipulations of it is that if a staffer didn't see it then it didn't happen....

Origins also screwed over many people in their Entrepreneur's Avenue section who were sold a 10x10 booth space only to find out when they got there it was 8x10 or smaller. Origins response? If you don't like it you can leave...

Origins also didn't promote the pin program at all but despite that it seems to have gone over well. The pins looked much better in person and several vendors sold out. They just sent out proofs of the Gen Con pins and they look much better than the Origins ones so far. I think I might up my quantity of pins ordered, the drat things better sell though.

Personally the show was great. I was able to do multiple interviews for my game Bee Lives. I also had several business meetings related to the game, some good playtesting and am in the works of forming a media partnership for it all thanks to the show. Origins has its problems, but its still fun and very useful.
