Idgi. Is it any better than, say, Krogers' E.V. which is a buck less? Besides not doing your own grocery shopping, obvs.

I don't know, hence why I'll trip report. I will say that Kroger olive oil is bland as gently caress. That's why I usually go with California Ranch. Give it a shot, You'll like it.

Three Mario Batali restaurants in Vegas closing down due to one of the financial partners pulling out https://www.yahoo.com/gma/3-mario-batali-restaurants-las-vegas-strip-close-172403552--abc-news-topstories.html?.tsrc=fauxdal His lieutenant Mark Ladner left in 2016 and started Pasta Flyer in New York. I wonder if he knew something bad was up with Batali and wanted to get away.

Steve Yun posted:Three Mario Batali restaurants in Vegas closing down due to one of the financial partners pulling out Well, that wasn't entirely expected. But good. Batali/Bastianich restaurants were among the greediest on wine upcharge (5-600% while 400% was the Strip norm), and they liked charging $25 for a four ounce side of potatoes. Oh, plus that whole Batali being a rapist thing. I feel bad for the regular folks losing jobs; hopefully it was a union spot and they'll have help finding another gig. Other Vegas note that's only tangentially food-related: the whole hockey thing has brought out a side of this town I never expected to see. It feels like a city with actual identity not related to the hospitality industry. I went to an industry bar (Starboard Tack, which y'all should be visiting) for Monday's game and the place was full of people yelling at the TV and having a great time. Later on I went downtown for some drinks and ended up at Evel Pie for a late night slice. A biker gang was hanging out on the patio. The restaurant was full of people from a nearby punk show in appropriately outlandish outfits (including two dudes with 12-inch mohawks), a handful of goths, a Sikh family of four, at least two drag queens, three dudes with waist-length dreadlocks wearing weed-related tshirts, and one very out of place guy wearing khakis and a polo shirt with iPhone earbuds hanging around his neck. As I stood in the long hot line in front of the ovens to order my slices of rattlesnake sausage pizza, someone walked in wearing a Knights jersey and a spontaneous "Go Knights Go" chant broke out from...well, everywhere. The whole restaurant full of weirdos joined in and we all had a moment of pure sportsball camaraderie. For the first time since I moved here in '99, Vegas has a sense of community, of communally owning something besides tourist profits and witheringly hot summers. It's weird, and pretty cool. And the rattlesnake sausage pizza was as good as ever, too.

I love how the hockey team went full Vegas in their pregame and in game experience. Vegas is ridiculous (and I say that as someone who loves to visit Vegas) and they really embraced that for the Knights and it appears the whole city is on board. Of course it also helps that they’ll probably win the Stanley Cup in their first year of existence.

Everywhere I go in town it feels like people are happy to be from Las Vegas for once. A real sense of civic pride has erupted, and it's cool to see spirits pick up because of it. I'm sitting in Mochiko Chicken rn and there's 3 Fluery jerseys, and as one guy left with a Knights hat, everyone just said "Go Knights!" Also, glad you went to Evel. That's really the only Good pizza in this town (which is sad).

Mr. Wiggles posted:Also, glad you went to Evel. That's really the only Good pizza in this town (which is sad). Strongly disagree. Settebello does great Neapolitan style, and their quality has been great since they opened. Pizzeria Monzu at Jones and Flamingo does an interesting Italitan/American hybrid pizza with house-fermented (extremely mild) sourdough crust and all-Italian ingredients that is unique and excellent. Old School Pizzeria way the hell up in the northeast was that chef's first restaurant and has a more traditionally Italian approach with the same great dough. Monzu also has an incredibly good, 100% Italian wine list. Due Forni sadly didn't survive a change in management, but at one point they were my favorite in town. (Wild mushroom and truffle pizza with a raw egg smashed/mixed tableside into the still-bubbling buffalo mozz? Pornographic.) Pizza Rock is fine (their non-pizza items are better than their pizzas, though) but not in the same class as the above spots. Metro is the local favorite but yeah, they're just sorta meh. Good variety of ingredients available, but way too busy and the quality is just okay. That said, Evel Pie is both super handy for tourists and one of the best in town.

So, please don't dox me ... but this stupid gay comedy forum helped me form a relationship with my stepdaughter with cooking. One of the first serious cooking projects we did together was the absolutely ridiculous chicken-cheese thread here in Goons With Spoons where we did sous-vide chicken breasts with homemade pasta and an alfredo sauce, and that has led to her becoming quite the accomplished pasta maker and baker. She was featured on tonight's MasterChef episode and got a white apron from Gordon Ramsey. Thank you all for the education.

Yeah it's Lidia Bastianich. She apparently tricked some lady to come to the US under the guise of teaching her the industry but then had her work hospice care for 6 years while saying she was working on her visa. She wasn't. She wasn't even paying her. It was bad enough that while she wasn't convicted criminally, she did apparently lose a 5MM settlement to the lady she made an indentured servant.
