What's a decent quote on having the timing belt and water pump replaced on an 03 Legacy 2.5 N/A? I'm about to start looking around and I'd like to know roughly what I'm about to spend. NorCal if that makes a difference.

Gotta pull the intake manifold off of the Gorester and replace the engine harness. Any tips? I saw on Youtube some dude pulled the alternator and PS pump, but I don't really see a reason to do it.

Pretty easy. 8 bolts and it comes off. Take the manifold and tgvs (if it's 2-piece), fuel lines, harness all off together. And yeah take off the alternator to make it easier to getting the coolant temp sensor unplugged and the harness for that and the crank sensor out of the way. And don't forget the knock sensor and p/s connectors before you try to lift it off.

Its easier to get to the inwards bolts but also you need to unclip a few things that are either under the alternator or next to impossible to reach to.

Also makes removing the manifold easier esp when the turbo intake piping still is there.

I'm looking to do a few things to my 17 wrx. I want new wheels and springs. Is there really any reason other than there are more options to go to 9.5in wide? I really don't want to get new tires as I have plenty of meat on my stock ones and I do not like the stretched look.

I may just bite the bullet and get the copper Enkei TS10s or the hyper bronze Cosmis R1s in 9.5 because they don't make them in 8.5.

What are my best options in tires (brand and width) and in springs?

jamal

Stock tires are 245? Yeah 9.5 is a bit of a stretch for most in that size, but on tirerack a width of up to 9.5" is listed for the dunlop sport maxx rt, and it's better to have the rim slightly wider than the tire from a performance standpoint. Most 245s are in the 8-8.5" range for measured tread width, but it does depend on the specific tire. A hankook RS4 for example is 9.1" wide and for that tire a 9.5" wide wheel is ideal. And of course 9.5s would allow you to go to wider tires next time around like a 265/35.

Springs, RCE black or yellow.

I can get you a set of springs if you're interested, and possibly the wheels.

Please note 265/35 on a 9.5 wheel requires an offset of at least +40. +35 will rub.

Also note good tires run $900-1000 a set at that size.

Famously tasty.
Ok, another tire question: it's getting to be time to replace the tires on my '16 Outback. What should I buy? Does it matter? I live in the SF Bay Area, so snow and other weather isn't much of a problem.

Trying to find +38-40 on wheels I like is loving impossible. I am going to keep looking for something. I believe 8.5in +35 shouldn't rub without a roll of the fender.

I can get the tires pretty cheap as I know someone who works at mavis and can order at cost from tirerack.

I have 18x8 +35 with 235/40R18 that fit just right. 8.5 would be another 6mm closer to the fender.

The enkeis come in 18x8.5 +50, which would be the offset to get in that size. Stock is the same size and +55.

With the 9.5" wide cosmis wheels, the +35 offset will put the inner surface of the rim in about the same spot but yeah it'll be a lot closer to the fender. However, a little fender roll is probably easier to deal with than a wheel/tire that hits the suspension parts, and if you went to a wider tire you'd probably want the +35, and then to roll the fenders.

The 2015+ wheel thread on nasioc would know better though.

https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2618034

Looks like around 1100 a set for either from me. Not sure if that's competitive; I don't get as good pricing on enkei as I'd like. Tirerack wholesale is cheaper but they will only ship to me.

I'm thinking about picking up a 2014-2016 Forester XT as our new family car. Is there anything major I should be watching out for? Were the improvements made in 2017 really worth the extra 5 grand it would cost to go there?

Also, what kind of mileage should I avoid? I've been looking for less than 50k

A few tweaks here and there, bit fo a different CVT programming that makes it better to drive, nothing too much different I believe.

Do not even think about a XT that has been modded of that age or one that shows signs of hard towing (honestly, both are probably not that likely anyway), both are CVT killers. Jerking, shuddering or stalling are really bad signs the CVT is about to cost a whoooole lot of money

Mostly service history is a must and given it's not exactly a car these days that attracts yahoos..... probably not a lot to look out for. Persoanlly pay the premium for the lowest kms possible and make sure hte CVT is still within warranty (which it should be, isnt Subaru extending coverage on that?) ... you absolutly do NOT want a CVT repair bill. Like that would be my absolute first thing to check for before anything else.

Edit : Actually yeah there is a decent update on the 2017 - Eyesight 3.0. You *want* this if you get a car with Eyesight, the older version are iffy

Oof, sorry about the Volk's. :(

It looks like you're lowered. Did you have any rubbing with the TE37's? Can't really tell whether they're past the fenders.

The rears rubbed on stock suspension on the sidewall. They stopped rubbing when I went to Tarmac 2 coilovers. From what I hear 245mm to 255mm does not rub at those wheel specs.

I looked at the accord before I bought my 17 wrx and there was not much of a difference. I was looking at the sport model because honda has the special ability to pick the worst looking wheels on every car they make and the stereo was no better than my stock stereo. I wanted a fun car to drive everyday and I get that with the WRX. Yes they could have made some things more refined, but tinkering part of my brain would be bored with everything else.

18x9.5 +35 Volk TE37SL with Michelin Pilot Supersport in 265/35R18

Then this happened 8 months later.

Then I got 18x8 +35 BBS LM with Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R

At the end of this year I have to sell them and get something in 18x9 to stay competitive in autocross.

I'm guessing you weren't running in stock class?

I ran stock my first season. ASP for a single race on the TE37s before switching back to 17x8 the second season. STH my this season. STH is new for the SCCA and it groups turbo hatchbacks and the like together. The max wheel size for STH is 9 inches with a max tire width of 245mm.

Ok new issue. I am looking to hard wire my dashcam to the mirror 12v supply with the 12v to 5v converter. To see what I am working with, I got to that harness going to the mirror and unplugged it (it's a short 4 inch harness with a black and white connecter on either side). When I couldn't find out which wire was which with my multimeter and decided to save it for another day. I now get no power to the mirror. Everything else works on that ceiling console, except for the power going to the mirror. I triple checked all connections but I get nothing.

Anyone with experience know what else I can check?

Looking online, there is a fuse that might be part of the problem.

I would love to do something like that, but I need to get racing seats. I am too tall and a helmet would not allow me to fit in the car.

How tall are you? If you lower the seat most people will fit.

6'4.

It's all the way down. I hate the power seats so much. I would go with the braum elites, but I love the heat option on my current seats.

It wasnt that bad, after you left I got to help put out the fire!

Im going crazy trying to fix oil leaks. Same 05 WRX Ive been working on forever. It has all new gaskets from when I did the head gaskets. Then the pcv pipe that goes on the intercooler was missing and replaced with a hose so the ones going to the valve covers were crimped. I replaced that so every hose is good and free flowing. I read that these cars dont like Mobile1 so I replaced it with Rotella T6. Then I cleaned out the PCV valve. It seems a little better but its still loving leaking out the valve covers, possilbly the cam seals too from what I can see and it drips right on the exhaust and smokes like crazy. Is there a possibility that the new gaskets are no good? Is there something else it could be? Im so sick of working on this thing.

When you put the valve covers back on, you used the rtv where the manual says right?

In the corners of the cam humps? Yea, I even removed and re-rtved those half moon plastic parts in the back of the heads. Maybe Ill try redoing it, use more rtv. I try to use as little as possible but Id use the whole tube a this point if it would work.

I ended up putting a bead of rtv from the top and down over the cam humps, all along the bottom and up to the end of the angle in the back. Went out and gave it hell and no more leaks. Im pretty anti-rtv but gently caress that poo poo if it works.

I think the PCV valve was sticking as well and not blocking boost from going into the crankcase since after getting on the turbo it would smoke like mad right after.

I just picked up an 05 Outback limited for beater duty.

I have wrangler Duratracs on my 09 Silverado that I'm giving to my dad, and love them. They don't seem to make them in a size that would fit the Outback however.

Digging around various forums has revealed that some guys can fit 16" Grabber AT/2s, and some have gotten Yokohama Geolandars to fit.

However, these sizes don't seem to come in true all-seasons (mountain/snowflake rated), and I live in a rural area (lots of snow in the winter, weeks of -40*C weather, and gravel roads).

I'd like to stick with that rating, and don't want to have two sets of tires for the car.

Are there any tires I might be overlooking?

If I go the 16" rim route, will rims from an 04/05 WRX fit?

DO YOU HEAR THAT? THAT'S THE SOUND OF ME PATTING MYSELF ON THE BACK.

After all the poo poo I've been giving Subaru, for some reason I'm seriously considering a Series Gray WRX.
