bird crazies, I have a question. I have a female green cheek who was hand-raised and came to me from her original owner when she was eight (owner had a kid and couldn't give bird enough attention any more.) Now she's fifteen. She's always been pretty independent for a green cheekie, she likes her cuddles and attention a lot but she only needs about an hour or two a day to be happy. The issue is that I also have two dogs and the dogs get a fair amount of my attention now, and I feel like my bird is getting a little lonely, especially during the day when I'm at work. I've had parrots before, but never more than one at once. Is it even a good idea to think about maybe adding another bird to the mix? I could handle another bird and kind of like the idea, because it seems another bird would be company for her. But since she's imprinted on humans, would she even like another bird? She seems interested in the neighbor's chickens when she sees them. Would another green cheek be the best bet? Parrots are very social and I hate the thought of her feeling lonely.

It's hard to say, because even if you do get her another birdfriend, they might not get along. Amadeus has never been interested in his peers; Charlie the Senegal is his buddy but only to the same extent where Ama is buddies with literally any human that crosses his path and acknowledges him (Charlie is just smart enough that I'm not sure Ama realizes he, too, is a bird). He loves attention from people, but he's always regarded cockatiels or other conures with a strong sense of "whatever."

That said, I do know he enjoys having company during the day when I'm not around, and I think his disinterest in other conures could be just an Ama thing, because the other ones he's met have been very interested in him. Perhaps you could take your bird to a breeder or a pet store with you and see how she reacts to seeing other birds up close?

That's part of what started me thinking about it, the last time I took her to the bird groomer there were a couple of other pyrrhura-type conures there and she seemed really interested in them, she kept staring at them and even answered their calls and whistles a couple of times. And when she sees the neighbor's chickens out on the lawn, she used to puff up a little and get snarky, but now she clucks back at them.

I got her when my last parrot passed away from liver cancer by just putting the word out among the bird people I know (the groomer, the vet, friends with birds) and waiting until I heard of a bird needing a new home that matched up well with my situation. Maybe I'll do that again and see if there's a conure out there looking for a home that we could do a meet and greet with to see how she feels about it.

Another anecdotal data point. Bandit’s flock instinct kicked in with my two tiels pretty hard and when she’s out she has to spend at least an hour terrorizing/hanging out with them. She also picks up their basic calls and will contact call every now and then to them when I take her to a different room.

She also bobs so furiously that sometimes she falls off her perch when I go to let her out. :3:

Today I put down a deposit on a baby conure. I'm springing for the DNA test and next weekend, I get to meet the little guy or girl. They're right around two months old and I can't wait to meet them. With any luck they'll be coming home middle July.

SOON.

(The parrot specialty store is right by Six Flags. I'm not sue if my heart can handle a bird and a roller coaster in the same visit.)

A pair of (I think) mourning doves built a nest in a small bin of parts in my stepdad's leanto by our garage and had a baby and they are the most chill family of wild birds I've ever seen, they'll all let you get right up by the nest and watch them through the holes in the box and stuff while just calmly looking at you and cooing quietly, it's amazing. Cute as a button too. Is this how they normally act or will I give the poor things a bird heart attack if I go near again to take some pics for the thread?

As I've said before, a dove dive bombed Wandy the Cockatiel off my shoulder once. It spent the rest of its life mean mugging Wandy through any and all windows.

Today, I woke up to see two doves outside on the balcony. Serra the cockatiel was losing her poo poo, and they were staring. I went outside to shoo them away and they just stared at me like, "What?"

I checked for bands, but nope. Just tame little balls of stupid hate.

(I like doves that don't harass my precious little friends!)

Edit : Also, Serra the cockatiel wouldn't come out of her cage for three days after she got clipped! She would for my Pops, but not me.

Grudge holding birb.

P. S. I showed loop de loop cockatoo to my father and he can't stop watching it and asking things like, "If a bird figured that out for the first time when I was high, I'd commit myself to an institution."

So, it's Sunday...SERRA SUNDAY!

Bird, where you go?

There bird are! There! And yes! Henlo!

I'mma eat your mouse!

No! Don't take me away from MOUSE! Must eat!

Why you move me? Don't look at me like that human.

I went to the Bird Hut and saw two great things.

First, a baby cockatiel that wouldn't stop whining at me for food. This fella looked exactly like tiny young Serra. Birb eat camera!

This cockatoo is so mean, it bit THROUGH my friends palm and rips people to shreds. So naturally, I'm somehow best buddies with him. I get to pet him and he does this whenever I walker my way into the room.

HENLO!

Through. If you guys want I'll post a picture. It's bloody as hell. She still can't feel certain parts of her hand.

I was letting the cockatoo give me nose bonks with his beak. The bird is weirdly unaggressive with me. Probably because I'm aggressively weird. :)
