Ha, alright I think I've been convinced to ditch the 24" monitors based on this and a response in the PC building thread. Time for some more research on that.

So I'm planning on jumping back into flight sim with a new rig after about a 3-5 year hiatus. I'm going with a i7-8700k processor and 1060 graphics card with 16 GB DDR 3200 RAM. I'm getting 2 Dell U2417H monitors and I'm pretty locked into 2 monitors and 24" displays due to desk space and also using them for work. Any red flags on the build/monitors? Also which game and addons would you pick if you were starting from scratch?

I've been an FSX guy in the past and don't want to re-learn much, so I was leaning to Prepar3D but it seems like XP11 is now pretty legit and may have faster development going forward. I won't be doing any paid addons since I just don't play enough to justify it, other than maybe Air Hauler 2 (Did they get rid of the awful real world clock/money system?). I play a mix of VFR and some IFR with tubeliners. I also like to see real-world AI aircraft flying around. I don't intend to play online really and doubt I would do the PilotEdge thing unless I really got into it this time around, so even the old FSX air traffic control system is good with me, and was actually a plus for me. Also if something is easier for sitting unused for 1-2 months then just jumping back in, that's how I tend to play.

So heres the deal, xplane atc and ai traffic is completely non functional basically. Within minutes of loading you will have a loving cessna upside on the runway dragging itself forward inch by inch some how trying to take off, poo poo like that. Atc also doesnt seem to be aware of terrain at all. Its a long way from finished. A lot of airports dont have buildings yet, cities mostly dont have skylines, airports are missing taxi routes etc.

Its all being worked on but its not even close to being doing done yet. There a free mods for all the issues and they are pretty good but if you were looking to install vanilla and go, hassle free, id look into it a bit more. You definetly dont need to pay to get good atc and traffic and scenery or anything really. The free stuff is also top notch and im surprised some of it is free, but youll still have to go hunt it all down and whatnot. The vanilla traffic puts on quite a show though i do recommend watching those brave pilots do their thing every now and then.

I came across this video about a state of the art sim from the 80's. The frame rate always looks ultra smooth in these. I mean, smoother than the smoothest frame rate on modern computers. I reckon it's because of the subtle motion blur caused by being filmed with a camera.

I'd love to have a flight sim that used that kind of blocky polygon graphics, but have the same fidelity as modern sims. I think the graphics still work nicely even today, unlike early low res textured 3D.

VR is going into the flat shaded low poly thing pretty hard, both as a style and a way to keep framerate high. I wouldn't be surprised to see something like Ultrawings with modern jet fighters appear at some point.

They're a part of the authentication because, if you remove them, the A320X won't get loaded. Does someone here know more about cmdhost.exe? Why does FSLabs give them such a deceptive name and put them in the system folders? I hate them for polluting my system folder unless, of course, it is a dll used by different applications.

PS - I am aware of the malware in the past. This is unrelated.

My concern -- and I would say this whether I were affiliated to FSL or not -- is that by permitting some clearly ungrounded and libellous comments to be made, they are actually unwittingly facilitating the spread of misinformation and (much as I hate the term) 'fake news'. Ask yourself -- never mind FSL or Flight Sim -- do you want to live in a world where 'freedom of speech' is more important than facts? Where anybody should be able to say anything unchecked and those who shout the loudest get heard the most, regardless of whether what they are saying is factual or not?

That is a question for all of us to ponder, and it's not going to get any easier going forward in a world where communication is easier, cheaper and faster than ever. I wish I had the answers.

I couldn't find again sadly, but earlier I was reading Reddit-posts on the subject and there was a funny comment exchange along the lines of:

----------------
User 1:
Keep making all the memes you want, but you know you're all still going to buy it.

User 2:
Well I will definitely not buy it and there's actually a large boycott movement against the company.

User 1:
Really? How could you not buy it when it has [list of ultra-spergy features the add-on has]?
-------------------

Like the concept of opting for a slightly less detailed add-on from another company to avoid lovely DRM/malware practices was completely outside the realm of his understanding. I love simmers. So there's your answer why FSLabs still haven't gone bankrupt.

My city has been fighting the f35’s arrival like mad due to noise complaints (nobody has actually heard one) . The national guard just set up a flight simulator for PR, uh reasoning how this would help them unknown. It’s closed to public unfortunately but from the picture it looks like either that same sim I’ve seen before there that resembles the physics of strike fighters or possibly looks like prepare 3d

TLDR i woke up to this local news quote“I got to experience how to take off, went about 400 MPH in no time at all, got to shoot out two enemy fighter jets,” said Alice Ruffner. “It felt like something I could do very easy, it was enjoyable.”

I have no idea why this is so funny to me

fwiw the F-35 is quite a loud plane, even for a fighter jet. It's noticeably louder than an F-16.

I'm anxious to hear it in person, from one to two miles away and the inverse square law, how much louder could it be?

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

erm... actually thieves should be summarily executed
Well the F-16 has a max thrust of about 32,000 lb while the F-35 hits 43,000 and they have about the same size exhaust nozzle so I'm gonna say it's 30% louder.

ethanol
Jul 13, 2007

Just doing some assumptive math on my own, finding the f-35 to be 125 dB at 1000' AGL and the F-16 to be 110 dB at 1000' AGL, at one mile distance that comes out to 110 dB for the F-35 and 95 dB for the F-16. 15 dB difference between them would be perceived to be around between two to three times as loud. That would be.. pretty loud in my experience with the F-16s here.

There are however, various sources for the recorded sound data at 1000' AGL, and they don't all agree

I used the numbers from an anti-f35 site. http://www.tucsonforward.com/files/F-35_Noise_fact_sheet_07-2014.pdf

The one PW has on their website says otherwise. https://www.pw.utc.com/Content/Press_Kits/pdf/me_f135_noise_fastfacts.pdf. They claim a 3 dB, barely detectable difference

That's why I want to hear in person.. who the hell knows

Operation Make Caucasus Great Again
Thread: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3633891
June 23, at 1700 UTC, on Air Goon Server.
Difficulty: loving easy
A DCS World Co-op mission.
Free SU-25T included, FC3 pack planes included A-10A and F-15C. In addition, A-10C, F-18, AV-8, and M-2000.
We will be using SImpleRadioStandalone.

Waypoint 1 is target waypoint for everyone, Waypoint 2 is for land based aircraft set to be their homeplate, and Carrier Aircraft can use Tacan 1X to find home. Carrier group is 40 nautical miles away from target, and friendly airport is only 32nm away, so flying even with A10s is fast and quick. The SEAD Frogfoots are the only _important_ planes who need to do the SEAD or we won't have much fun. After they are done, they can do regular CAS. Other than that, as long as few Eagle or Hornet dudes take down the scattered planes, there isn't a large threat besides the low level MANPADS.

Two frequencies that you have to have memorized:
-251.000mhz AM for AWACS and flight-to-flight communication
-TACAN at 1X to find carrier.
-Your in-flight can be whatever channel you want.

In 1989 a locally known, publicly ridiculed, real estate mogul from New York is finally laughed out of the City, and using whatever scraps he has from his failed Casino adventures, he buys himself a Grand Duchy of Rogaine on the coast of Caucasus. In addition, with help of dumb luck and tax fraud, he manages to secure several million dollars, using these to purchase old Soviet equipment for himself, and his Duchy. The mogul shitposts on various UseNet communities, and is known to partake in shady dealings with the La Cosa Nostra, plus, let's face it, no one likes him.

Eventually, his old hotel chains would be bought by a relatively unknown fella, one Robert M., Assistant Attorney General, working for Attorney General Dick Thornburgh in Massachusetts. Besides his service as an exemplary infantry platoon leader in Vietnam War in the Marine Corps, not much is known about the mysterious prosecutor. However, long story short, he would eventually discover documents inside the abandoned hotel chain offices that would lead him to turn them in for the government, alleging stolen government property and classified information.

In spring of 1993, Clinton hears about the case, and being just loving tired of the exiled Mogul, and frustrated after being turned for oral services by a nameless White House staffer, orders a pre-emptive strike to make sure that no further threats are to be given from the Duchy. President Clinton taunts the Duke over an early Prodigy chat room , which leads to public celebration.

It's July 4th, 1993. Carrier Group Stennis, under protection of French and Greek Navy, is on the coast of the Duchy, ready to launch strikes, commanded by famous Admiral Hillary Clinton of the Battle of South China Sea. Simultaneously, a combined NATO task force is at a nearby airfield, ready to initiate pre-emptive Supression of Enemy Air Defences, led by Air Force Colonel Sanders from Vermont Air National Guard. After managing to institute on federal level all his political goals, Sanders accepted a commission as a Colonel, flying Eagles for Vermont Air Guard because he thought it was pretty dope. gently caress yeah, 'Merica.

Task for the combined strike package:

Destroy the Duchy's one and only air base at Gelenzhik Airport, now named into ''Air Base Eric'', due to it's young child soldier commander.
Destroy the parked planes, fuel tanks, hangars, and ensure that the hangars where the enemy planes are kept are destroyed. Until the hangars are destroyed, the enemy will surely keep scrambling whatever piece of poo poo junk they have in their wares. Ensure that all five Mig31s that are parked in hidden spots are destroyed. This is important.

Secondary objective:
Destroy the combat fleet that is being refitted in the harbor. They are currently no threat, but will be one in the future.

ENEMY THREATS:

Mainly Mig21, Mig15, Fw190 airplanes, but there are known to be two MiG29s bought from a KGB agent who sold them after finding two abandoned at an airbase.
In addition, scattered enemy RAA in the form of TOR launchers, some IGLA MANPADS, and enemy troop and materiel convoys.

Friendly Forward Air Controller has found a location above a mountaintop, overlooking the airbase. They can lase and spot enemy targets for our package.

In addition, our carrier group has some issues. The commander of VF9, CAPT Mitchell, Pete, known for his antics, just told us that he was buzzing shipping near the coast of the Duchy today, taking this picture of a Yacht where the Duke himself is thought to be located. Sadly his recklessness caused the Yacht to turn around and head back to the Duchy, and its supporting vessels, thought to carry diet coke, to head back to towards the harbor, most likely in anticipation of a strike. This has upped the tempo, gentlemen, and we must attack right away.
