But hey, I guess there's the possibility that your galacticbrain.jpg posts are actually serious and you really do mean the wild, profoundly braindead things you say. either way, yikes

Didn't Finnland's UBI plan just fizzle out?

It's reaching the end of the trial period and the government (who didn't like it much to begin with) decided not to continue with it. What impact it had is still being assessed.

People trumpetted it as a huge failure but that's misrepresenting the situation.

Hard to say it failed given it hasn't finished yet (and the results haven't been analysed), and UBI isn't even a socialist idea.

I'd say the fact that it isn't being renewed says enough about it's success. Functional ideas speak for themselves.

UBI is blatantly socialist. By that logic, Universal Healthcare isn't socialist.

Milton Friedman was a noted advocate of a UBI, and it's a popular idea in Silicon valley with supporters like Zuckerberg. And it's not hard to find left-wing critiques of it from people worried that a practical implementation of a UBI would simply entrench current power structures.

Calling it "blatantly socialist" is just bizarre.

It's a collectivist policy that operates on the premise of the central government redistributing wealth. It got the look, walk, and quack of socialism.

The fact that personal opinions don't fall neatly along partisan lines doesn't change that.

That's not what socialism means, either in theory or in practice.

A UBI funded by the nationalisation of every Fortune 500 company would certainly be a socialist policy. A UBI funded by the kind of taxation advocated by Friedman (and Smith) would not. It's not inherently a right-wing or left-wing idea.

From Google:

"a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole."

A central government redistributing the wealth generated by production, to the community as a whole, is literally the definition of Socialism.

Socialism is about, as your quote says, the idea that the community should own and control the means of production.

That is not the same as taxing privately owned and operated enterprises.

This is getting far too D&D so I'm done.

Then, by your definition, Finland isn't Socialist, but Capitalist with an attached welfare state.

I think posters should have to take an exam proving they understand political and economic theory before they’re allowed to post about it. I’m aware this would leave approximately two well-informed users and also SMG.

So what you're saying is that anything short of completely unregulated free-market capitalism is actually socialism? That's not what most people mean when they use the word but if we can agree that that's how you're defining it then at least we have a basis for understanding what you're saying.

Not even unpopular political opinions just people saying what they reckon then leaning back smugly with their arms crossed. In future you can take your political chat to D&D. If you don't like D&D too bad because that's how everyone else feels seeing 30 new replies and it's one dude saying he hates chocolate milk and 29 boring as poo poo snipes about leftism/conservatives.

Chocolate's fine, but strawberry's the better option. There was a brief period where Big M made chocberry flavour and that was the best, but I guess that's an unpopular opinion because it didn't last.

Strawberry milk always tastes chalky to me and doesn't taste like strawberry at all. It's the worst milk flavor, and also the worst icecream flavor. Whenever we'd get those neapolitan things of icecream, the strawberry third was always the last to go.

What really annoys me is that the brand of ice cream I like sells vanilla, chocolate, neapolitan, vanilla-and-chocolate, and vanilla-chocolate-and-caramel but not strawberry by itself so if I want strawberry ice-cream I've got to buy neapolitan and I don't want the other two flavours. :argh:
