Take it out for upgrades, and at the same time start a major upgrade cycle on your aircraft. The guy who posted that your stuff is out of date is right. Even allowing for retraining you'll see less casualties with better aircraft, and more dead bombers.

Yeah, as much as you can also upgrade your planes - well as much as you're willing to do with the system you have. The AI should probably spend the next month focused on Truk and Wake so you should have the time to do it.

I mean, the IJN rocket AA would certainly be more useful than the rocket AA the British developed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unrotated_projectile).

Not that this means it would actually be particularly useful, but anything's better than a system which is both worthless AND can cause damage to your own ship if it's a bit windy.

you'd think, but the bloody game won't let me change upgrade paths for some reason. This is part of the reason we have so many old planes flying around, as I can't change those squadrons to anything that exists before '45.

Grey: There is a game setting: Player Defined Upgrades, you can turn it on or off during your game. Turned off it means you are limited to the upgrade path defined in the scenario, turned on you can choose any available planes within the same category. Since you are getting slaughtered I would reconmend to turn it to ON, so you can decide where to put which planes yourself.

In order to upgrade you need a lvl 5 airfield and enough supplies, fly your planes to big bases , upgrade them there and fly them back

I Will post a printscreen later

Based on that sound I Guess you found the PDU setting.

Look at the bright side: any pilots that survived 2 years in crappy planes against the Allies, means that you have some really good pilots with excellent defense values

Trick now is to retool the Japanese aircraft and engine industry to good models

On the upside by 1945 when the Allies have thier ten CV's out he'll have better planes and a full strength carrier force to meet them!

Good luck wtih getting the upgrades in and your air force up to full strength.

And you probably can make fewer Helens

I brought up the Nates way back when (flying out of Jaluit, maybe?) and I think PDU was mentioned but perhaps not really explained at the time.

Bloody banshees.

This is a nice looking raid.

There a fewer raids on Rabaul today.

That was a really quiet day. But I'm not complaining to much – my planes need to replenish, and my troops rest up.
I continue to try different option to try and get my bombers in Hankow to attack Chunking.

And good luck again figuring out how to setup the upgrade path to be non-borked.

I swear that button wasn't there when I first started playing.....

Upgrades complete, I've got a long rear end buffer, but we should start seeing Tojos around mid month - I have plenty in stores, so I can get them out to Rabaul quickly.

I've retooled my production to take account of this. We should see some real changed by the end of the month!

I played with PDU off in my allies game for nearly a year and then turned it off out of frustration, because it's really kind of silly to expect that every squadron follows the upgrade path it used historically unless you're intentionally stationing units in their historical location.

There's also the fact that there are a bunch of weird upgrade paths that result from the game allowing only one aircraft type per squadron. For example, the Flying Tigers upgrading from H-81s to P-40Es when they used both simultaneously (they flew whatever they could get flying) or one of the 10th Air Force successor units upgrading from P-40Es to P-43A-1s (of which you only get like 8, not enough to equip a full squadron) and then back to P-40Ks. It also meant that certain airgroups took a long time to get upgrades, since even though you have 300 P-40Es in the pool this one squadron of P-36s isn't scheduled to upgrade until a late war variant. You also can't downgrade a group to a previously used variant, which means you really run your pools low in 1942. The worst part is the billion different Hurricane variants you get in the Burma theater that you can't mix.

I guess PDU off would be a useful tool to prevent the Allies from being too powerful early in the game (so they can't freely rotate their best aircraft to frontline units) but after about mid-42 it becomes more and more illogical as your own scenario diverges from history. For the Japanese it's even more illogical, since aside from letting army units flying navy planes (which you can't do anyway, since the IJN and IJA are counted as separate factions), the Army and Navy had practically complete control over doctrines and production. Add to that the fact that your aircraft industry can seriously vary depending on player control and resource/oil inputs into your economy, and PDU off makes no sense except for maybe the first 6 months, where you won't have much choice of aircraft anyway.

Awesome Grey! Glad to see that you're getting this in and fixed. Hopefully it makes for a more interesting endgame if you have an intact carrier grou pwtih modern planes (for the IJN) and enough pilots surviving to have decent experience. Way to go!

And decided to do the carriers and thier escorts for upgrades or not yet?

"Wikipedia posted posted:

The Nakajima Ki-44 Shōki (鍾馗, Zhong Kui) was a single-engine fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force in World War II. The type first flew in August 1940 and entered service in 1942. The Allied reporting name was "Tojo"; the Japanese Army designation was "Army Type 2 Single-Seat Fighter" (二式単座戦闘機).

It was less maneuverable than its predecessor, the nimble Ki-43, and pilots disliked its poor visibility on the ground, its higher landing speed, and severe restrictions on maneuvering. Yet, it was obvious the Ki-44 was clearly superior overall as a combat aircraft compared to the Ki-43.[2] As an interceptor it could match Allied types in climbs and dives, giving pilots more flexibility in combat and greater pilot confidence than the Ki-43.[3] Moreover, the basic armament of four 12.7mm machine guns or two 12.7mm guns and two 20 mm cannons (plus a few aircraft which carried two Ho-301 40 mm cannons of limited range) was far superior to the older Ki-43's two 12.7mm machine guns. These characteristics made the fighter, despite performance restrictions at altitude, a useful B-29 Superfortress interceptor and one of the Japanese High Command priorities during the last year of war. However, like most of the Japanese aircraft flown in the last part of the war, the low availability of properly trained pilots made them easy targets for experienced, aggressive, and well trained Allied pilots flying superior aircraft.[3]
...
The Ki-44-II Otsu (also known as the Ki-44-IIb) could be armed with a Ho-301 40 mm autocannon. While this was a relatively high-caliber weapon, it used caseless ammunition with a low muzzle velocity and short range, which was effective only in close attacks. Some of these aircraft were used against USAAF bombers by a special Shinten Seiku Tai (air superiority unit), comprising at least four aircraft,[5] that was part of 47th Sentai, based at Narimasu airfield in Tokyo. Pilots from such units attempted to shoot down B-29s and, once their ammunition was expended, to ram them – effectively a suicide attack. While the concept appeared straightforward, ramming a B-29 at high altitudes was difficult to achieve in practice.
