The basic inescapable failing with their "Gourmet Creations" range (I assume it has the same name in the US) is they're competing with actual burger chains/restaurants at a similar price point, and they're just not going to win against burgers that are actually good for the same price. If I'm going to spend $15+AUD on a burger and chips, it's not going to be on a McDonalds burger with a tiny side of french fries.

I used to work directly across the street from a McDonald's, but would still drive 15 minutes to Wendy's or Popeye's or something if I wanted something to eat. The only times I went there were if my break were cut short for one reason or another, and any time I didn't get the chicken sandwich, I nearly got sick. I honestly don't know what they can do to compete with companies that actually do seem to be trying, other than to accept that they're just a cheap, lovely burger and start focusing exclusively on the Big Mac and quarter pounder quality or something.

Y'know weirdly enough their not-Starbucks coffee drinks are pretty great. Way cheaper in general too. If they promo'd that beyond "trying to be exactly like starbucks" and instead advertised it as "cheap decent fancy coffee" they'd probably get more business. It's also literally the only thing I can have at McDonalds because even their non-gluten items make me have gluten reactions like they throw them through a cloud of flour before serving

McDonalds should bring back the heat lamp. In ye olden times if you ordered basic menu items with no customization service was usually instant: the guy at the till would turn around and grab the items out from under the heat lamp and you're good to go. If you were suspicious of the heat lamp and wanted to be sure of getting something fresh you'd order extra pickles or whatever and wait. Nowadays I've waited up to 7 minutes for a drat cheeseburger. WTF? And instead of the guy at the counter just handing you your food and then moving to the next customer, he takes your money and then shuffles you off to the corner of eternal waiting so he can deal with the next customer. If you can't beat the competition on price or quality, beat them on speed.

SpacePig posted:quarter pounder quality or something. They tried to do this recently by cooking the burgers only when you order them. Of course this results in poo poo being rushed out, and when I split a double quarter pounder with my sister it was pink as poo poo on the inside. I'd rather have a burger from a warming tray than an uncooked one.

True, but I used to work in fast food and never got a reaction as bad as McDonalds granted I'm pretty hit or miss on trace gluten/contamination thankfully. that being said if you want fast food without gluten I definitely recommend chick-fil-a because they fry their fries and hashbrowns in a separate fryer from everything else. They're like the only fast food place that does afaik. I could really go for those waffle fries. Funny Picshure:

I maintain that McDonald's shouldn't try to compete with upscale burger joints and should instead focus on its primary strength: the drive-through. McDonald's was born of car culture and should lean into it. If you want a fancy-rear end burger with fancy-rear end toppings, go to Five Guys or whatever. If you want a burger you can eat one-handed while you're doing 80 down the interstate and not get toppings on your shirt, go to McDonald's.
