Well this was a lot quicker than anticipated. We've officially had the new kitten for a week, and yesterday we got this: Rexie has accepted her new little brother (/toy that doesn't run out of batteries)

DicktheCat posted:Holy poo poo. I thought cats were like incapable of seeing animals that much smaller than themselves as anything but prey or toys. What the hell is going on here? Well, you'll notice they generally don't eat their own kittens, which start out not much bigger than that... Which is kind of what you have here. Cats are capable of forming bonds with other cats. Also with animals that they assume are basically cats (like us). The cat isn't seeing the hamster as a rodent, the cat is seeing the hamster as a weird small cat he can hang out with. Also see mother cats who will adopt just about anything if they encounter it soon enough after giving birth. "I don't know many kittens with beaks and wings, but these are mine and I love them."

One of the semi-feral cats I had in Tennessee caught a mole, brought it up to the patio, and proceeded to play house with it. She acted like the momcat I fostered at one time did towards her kittens when they were mobile. She'd flop down on her side several feet away then trill at the mole. As soon as it tried to make a run for it (they are not very good at running) she'd trot over, pick it up by the scruff of its neck*, move it back to the center of the patio, groom it, then flop down several feet away again and trill at it. I got all the semi-feral kittens spayed and neutered before they were matured, so it's not like her hormones could have been out of whack. She was just a weird cat. I caught her siblings playing volleyball with a shrew-mole late one night. Like, keeping it airborne, smacking it back and forth. *Moles don't seem to have scruffs like cats, but Veruca picked the mole up gently by the skin behind its head.

I realize you probably don't have pictures of Veruca and her molebaby, but if you have pictures of her regardless, I feel it would help to sell the grandeur and nobility of that story.

I will check my lovely computer. Veruca was also the only one of the 5 that the grackles hated. I'm guessing because she is a classic brown tabby while her mom and siblings are broken or ticked tabbies, so it was harder to tell them apart.

My mom has always raised collies, and had this beautiful blue merle she was doing obedience and rally with. Over the course of a year, she replaced almost every single carpet in the house with tile or hardwood flooring. Collies being neurotic, he was traumatized and refused to walk on anything not carpeted. So my mom went and bought approximately a million small mats and throw rugs and scattered them all over the new carpet, and he would happily leapfrog rug to rug. This big, floofy dog wagging his tail and hopping all over the house was just adorable.
