To be fair some people don't even know it exists in the first place. This is part of why Google puts the phone number and the website as the first listing if you type things that sound like you're trying to hurt yourself. Suicidal and severely depressed people are often also in a state where they don't want to bother the people they know with their problems so it can be easier to talk to a stranger.

The point wasn't that they're doing it on purpose but that always pointing people to use the service that is so underfunded that there's no one to pick up the phone may hurt more than help some vulnerable people.

Yeah but its not their fault they don't have funding and the staff needed to take all the calls they get so calling them "poo poo" for it is pretty unfair. I think the "number of lives saved" to "number of lives lost due to them being on hold" ratio is still going to be pretty good.

I agree it sucks that vulnerable people being put on hold is bad but maybe if the rest of your healthcare system wasn't a compleat shitshow they'd get the help they needed sooner?

I don't think your solution of "don't tell/advertise a service that might save lives because some vulnerable people might end up on hold instead" is the best "fix"

I have a friend who came real loving close to capping himself last year and the fact that he could call me and leave messages on my answering service and the services of a few mutual friends kept him going for long enough to get onto someone.
