ryonguy posted:USA was lame because it was basic cable so no nipples. I never understood who they were trying to attract with not quite softcore porn. I liked staying up late to watch usa to laugh at the terrible movies. Sometimes it was bad low budget sci fi, other times it was stupid sexploitation movies where they obviously cut out any actual nudity which sometimes made the movie make no sense at all. It was also obvious that not only were the actors bad they weren't even trying. That was when I realized I enjoy low budget schlock far more than meticulously crafted blockbusters. I think they were also appealing to people who considered actual porn sleazy so they watched "let's grasp at any flimsy excuse to put women in revealing clothing we can find" instead. And, you know, teenagers.

Was there ever basic cable boobs in the US? Canada we had the French Channel with its Blue Nuit, and later Showcase and Bravos broadcast of indie and european movies including the best erotic movies Europe can provide. You could see straight up penetration in a few of them. This is before internet was widely available to most people. The funny side effect of watching every movie that was on late night on those two channels is you'd end up seeing really great movies. I mean, I saw Brazil for the first time that way, along Clockwork Orange, Blue Velvet, Dead Ringers and others. Hope for boobs, see an amazing film I'd have never seen before.

You could see stuff like Robocop and Hellraiser with the boobs and the words poo poo and gently caress blanked out, but with all of the gore intact. It was good enough to feel like you were getting away with something.

In the early 2000s, MTV (or MTV2, who knows) would show uncensored music videos late at night, sometimes, including stuff like NIN's "Closer" and Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up" which are both pretty out there. Comedy Central also showed the South Park movie and celebrity roasts uncensored late at night sometimes, not sure if they did other stuff like that, or how far the content went beyond cursing. (Saddam Hussein's dildo in SP:BLU is pretty explicit though.)

Cable channels are considered optional, so technically they could show boobs at noon if they really wanted to deal with the puritanical pushback. On the other hand cable channels have their own standards and practices departments that can actually be more strict than the FCC at times. There's been quite a few cases of working around the S&P restrictions coming up with some much better solutions than just calling someone an rear end in a top hat.

There was nothing worse at my Jr High than being the one kid who didn't see SNL on saturday night. Like how could you of missed the first Schwing! or Makin' Copies, or the 3 weeks where Norm McDonald did weekend update? The strange thing about SNL at that time is that sometimes they'd show a rerun from the era just before the early 90s one and you'd be confused. Why are the skits not funny, who are these people? What the hell? I was first able to stay up late when I was a teen in the 90s, so i was able see the last few years of Carson, and then Leno, but holy poo poo the first time I saw Conan O'Brien was a revelation. like it was like the first time I saw Star Wars or Star Trek or read X-men, here was something that was totally what I was into, comedy wise. I had no idea who this guy was, had no idea about his connection to SNL or The Simpsons, just this really awkward dorky guy making awkward dorky jokes about stuff I totally got. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF9escc2EN0&t=7s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4Ad_YRwwNM Thank got NBC doesn't care if clips of the old conan shows are on youtube.

The first time I saw Conan (had to be in '93), all I remember was something about Gilbert Gottfried and frozen peas or something. It was cringey as hell. A year or so later, I tried it again and was hooked ever since.
