Tortolia posted:

Giant Bomb talked about some of this. What we have to keep in mind is Bethesda basically has three offices now, and it sounds like their Austin studio (not the Maryland mothership) is doing F76.

There were 4 years between Skyrim and Fallout 4. 4 years from that would be 2019 for Starfield. If we want to stretch a bit, make it 2020 and 5 years.

Bethesda also is keeping poo poo extremely close to the vest these days. Elder Scrolls Blades? This fall. Fallout 76? This fall. Prey expansion packs and patches? Tonight and this summer. Fallout Shelter ports? Today. Rage 2 and Wolfenstein Youngblood next year.

This isn't to say everything they announce is a "before next E3" release and they were very pointed in saying that TES6 is after Starfield and down the line, but Bethesda seems far more comfortable with announcements they are confident in not having to delay or push back frequently. They're operating from such a position of strength that they announce things on their terms and not because they have to desperately hype something at E3 that is years down the road.

Maybe it's a stretch but I could totally see Starfield being their big holiday 2019 game, especially if it's been a game they have been bouncing around internally for years before really starting to develop.

Bethesda has a solid track record. Even if there did end up being a delay or two has anyone given them money for the product yet? Other than I guess you can pre-order Fallout Online in a week for a fall 2018 release?

Even if Starfield is just Skyrim in space with spaceships being janky horse (with horse armor DLC built-in) re-skins, I'm going to play it for 500 hours buy it on PC and on Nintendo Switch XL in 2024.

Can we still call things? If so, I'm making a call.

Starfield will release on a Nintendo console before Star Citizen releases on PC.

I don't know about you, but I like Bethesda games for the exact reason I love cheesy 80s action movies. They're janky, have deeply flawed stories but drat if they aren't fun in all the right ways.

Bethesda Game Studios Austin is Bethesda Game Studios. They are a satellite studio, exactly the same way Bethesda Game Studios Montreal is Bethesda Game Studios. The game will release with the splash screen 'Bethesda Game Studios' on it.

This is straight stupid. They're not the same people. The people who work at one don't work on the same projects the people who work at another do.

Not sure what stupid point you're trying to make here buddy.

Do you think that Ubisoft Montreal works on everything that Ubisoft Paris or Ubisoft Berlin does? Sometimes, but sometimes they work on different projects. The "they're the same studio" is really dumb.

They are physically different studios. You could argue that Bethesda Game Studios Austin will always work in conjunction with Bethesda Game Studios but I don't think that's true at all, especially when they were already their own independent game studio and were just brought under the umbrella of Bethesda recently.

That's a lot of speculation but no actual knowledge regarding the game itself.

That’s really the extent of most everything Howard has ever said on Space RPGs, on prior space game ambitions, and big unnamed projects which can now be assumed to include Starfield. That plus what he said and showed last night is really all there is — besides 4chan leaks of questionable origin and hours of theorycrafted speculation from Youtubers on the eyeball hunt. (I’m sure within the last 24 hours there are dozens more hours worth of that very same nontent...)

It’s not much, but up until yesterday, Starfield was not even officially acknowledged.

Summarized: Starfield is a massive single player space exploration game from BGS that’s being lead by Todd Howard, a guy who has long spoken of and several times attempted to get a space game going at BGS.

Speculative: We’ve been told he will give a little more guidance tomorrow on the NoClip documentary, but I assume it will be very much of the “I’ve always wanted to go out and explore the universe stuff” he said while talking about the Star Trek RPG they didn’t make. I’d hope to see and hear more than that but they’ve been so tight-lipped for so long that seems rather unlikely.

The selective Citizen panics about it are silly. Starfield is single player and in Howard’s words a game in their usual style. Chris Roberts aims to create a PC only, multiplayer spaceship collector’s Second Life with moons that can fit all of Skyrim in a crater.

Advantage: Chris Roberts.

Even for the Q&A’s, where we get hypothetical transparency, to Q&A’s frequently don’t match the product like the uniquely Aegis Starfarer Gemini. […] Add onto that a complete lack of transparent financials, TOS that lock people into arbitration that costs two hundred bucks to file for, and the fact CIG/RSI haven’t voluntarily issued a refund since january, and what you’ve got is a bunch of pissed off people who feel like they’ve been conned, but CIG won’t let them just have refunds and go away. There’s even more denialism when it comes to the actual development process itself… you get attacked vitriolically if you point out that CIG seem to have an inability to feature lock anything, or that when you say something is ‘right around the corner’ in 2016, people may be frustrated when it doesn’t come in 2017, and you can’t even put out a roadmap to it in 2018, for fear of accidentally showing backers just how far away SQ42 still is from done. Watching the Starfield teaser video, one thing became apparent: Bethesda doesn't understand game development. Bethesda flat out says they have been thinking and working on the game for years. Isn't the thinking about the game part supposed to come many, many years after development starts?

Having said that, i'm pretty certain CR is doing his best to ensure that SC is never released.
