today at work we had a guy die. he slipped on a puddle and fell, bracing himself on a wooden plank that knocked over a helium tank. also someones coffee that spilled on him. the nozzle hit an anvil and broke off. the tank went shooting across the floor and bounced off two walls and impaled the guy, dragging him 500ft across the floor and into a furnace which we kept open for ease of access. barely knew him. rip.

lost another at the plant today. had a foreman playing hacky sack with another floor worker above the iron smelter and lost his balance and fell over the rail. he landed next to the pot luckily but the weight of him falling off shook the walkway (suspended with wire ties to the connecting joints to save money) and the other guy dropped his slurpee into the molten iron and the foreman took a splash of liquid metal to the face. goddamn hippie.

Both of the fatalities you posted here are basically like deadly Rube Goldberg machines.

I'd guess the ground side disconnected first but the truck side was damaged enough that the fuel pressure finished the job.

The hose is designed to break like that rather than damage the valves on either end. The fact that both ends broke simultaneously shows that it was engineered and manufactured really well.

At this point I'm certain train drivers coming across this know exactly when to apply the brakes so that they plow through the "blockage" for exactly 100ft before stopping. It's just too common in these videos.

Yeah, that time is "pretty much as soon as you see the obstruction". Don't gently caress around on train tracks.

The train goes along a bend of route 66 at that point and emerges just about 500m ahead of that intersection from the embankment of the previous overpass, a train coming from the southwest has about 400 yards to hit the breaks at that point. There's nothing the conductor can do.

This is a good reason why lights will be connected to the train warning system so that they turn green to clear the intersection before a train comes. Driver is still an idiot for parking himself on the middle of the tracks and doing absolutely zero to try and get out of the way, but proper traffic control can help.

The average freight train moving at 55 miles per hour or a passenger train at 80 miles per hour takes about a mile to stop. Trains have an insane amount of momentum and train operators have to be thinking miles ahead to effectively control their speed.

If a typical train driver sees an obstruction a mile away with binoculars, they usually have to resign themselves to hitting it.

He may or may not have done something wrong to end up there, but he was blocked in by traffic in front.

You can actually see him off the brakes multiple times trying to keep creeping ahead out of the way.

Maybe this is already obvious, but isn't that Camry in tow of the RV in front of it? I think the RV driver just didn't realize that the car was still on the tracks until it was too late.

I think he was trying to move, but just wasn't willing to ram the cars in front of the RV. He's creeping up almost the whole video. I can't tell if he's also laying on the horn like I'd be.

After exactly one accident of this type, the city/county, and railroad should have been demanding that the traffic stuck where that guy was, get cleared by the signal every time a train came through there

"Hey Bob, what happens if someone 'blocks the box' at this intersection, when a train comes through?"

"Uh, I guess the train hits them, Jim"

"Maybe we should make it so that doesn't happen"

"That sounds complicated, let's just have accidents a few times a year"
