That is amazing, a reminder that the human body is optimised for endurance running and not for raw strength.

Hmm gorillas are have a way better strength to mass ratio than us puny humans, we need to train 3 gorillas to properly test this angles hypothesis.

If the dude holding up the guy who jumped drops him, he will spear straight onto his head. And he's a rugby player, so that's probably around 240 pounds to the dome - guys have been crippled by that before.

WSM competitors don't do armwrestling any more. There was a time in the 70s when they did, but they stopped after one guy gave a rival a compound fracture of his forearm.

His name is Tendai Mtawarira and this isn’t even the first time he’s saved someone. I know nothing about rugby but to be so aware of your teammates to prevent a life-threatening injury, that’s a hell of a guy. vvv thank you for the context! Tendai's job there is to lift/support the jumper in the air so he can catch the ball. They changed the rules because players were getting rocketed too high into the air and getting injured. What's unclear really is if Tendai is just getting in the wrong place or if his teammates go mental on the assumption he'll catch them.

Drunk Driver Dad posted:I think he means they don't do it as part of their competition anymore. I'm not sure it was ever part of the competition. They just used to do it as a sideline for extra cash; professional arm wrestling was and possibly still is more lucrative than strongman events. There was at one point direct physical contests in WSM - I seem to recall sumo was an event in the early 80s - but they long since phased that out.

The strongman who got his arm broken was pro wrestler/actor Nathan Jones. He was up against Magnus Samuelsson, who is a national arm wrestling champion in Sweden. Maybe for the squeamish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrHm5XeN-dQ

He isn't in the wrong place, he's assisting the jumper who compensates for the ball travelling further than expected. That causes him to overbalance and Tendai manages to bring him back down to the ground safely.

The player who catches the ball also has a lot of trust in his teammate to still hold onto the ball when he's already way past the point where his body knows is normal for a catch like that. He doesn't actually free up a hand (in case the guy holding him slips) until it's already too late

He doesn't actually free up a hand (in case the guy holding him slips) until it's already too late It's good training too. The correct form is to go rigid while being lifted because it's easier to maintain grip and lift. Flailing around increases the chances of being dropped and increases strain on the lifting player.
