Donald Trump used bone spurs to get out of Vietnam. And while I think it gives him no right to talk poo poo about anyone who has ever been in the military, it is 100% smarter than breaking your leg and deciding to do it again. Congrats, you’re dumber than Donald loving Trump.

I came to this very section while I was stationed in Germany. Loving life. I was arrogant and didn't realize it. I was limited to my perspective and gently caress anyone else's. Then I got hurt. Fine one day, and then the next I could barely walk 100m without agonizing pain. Shin splints like you wouldn't believe. Ended up being compartment syndrome. Had surgery but it didn't go away. You see, I also have a herniated disc from Army life. Just found out, so that was 6 years of wondering WHY my legs hurt and eventually I got kicked out of the Army for it. The Army hated me, and I'm sure you can sort by posts and see how close to suicide I've come in this thread. Because it doesn't matter how good you are at your actual job, it's how good you can soldier. You're married right? Plan on kids? I have three awesome boys. All under 4 years old. I'll never be able to run and play with them. I can teach them how to ride a bike but I cant ride one myself. You know how hard it is to explain to your son that "daddy cant play tag" because of your back or legs? Not yet you dont. Live your life. Do what you want to do. But dont turn away the advice being handed down here. If you're going to jump again, heal. Be patient. I'd rather you didn't jump, but I know you'll do it anyways.

I can retire early with my wife if we stay on track with this with our IRAs and TSP, and it’s just too tempting to pass. Not only that but so far I just really like the Army. *turns patrol cap sideways* Hey bro. Let me talk at you. I've been in for 21 years now (and am still in like a doofus). I've seen dozens (hundreds?) of dudes in your situation. You can have an amazing life set up just on what you've done so far. 1. You can get that med board retirement. 2. You can get that VA disability rating + payment. 3. You can go to school for free while getting retirement/dis-ability (either through GI bill or VA). 4. Depending on what state you settle down in you can get other awesome benefits like lower taxes than everyone else and/or free college for your wife and kids. 5. That extra $$ from the retirement/disability will allow you to take any job that interests you and you'll still be very comfortable doing something you really like. 6. Americans worship vets. You'll be the most employable dude on the block. And you, and your wife can live an awesome life. And you'll always be able to speak with pride (to civilians at least because they don't know poo poo) about your time in the military. Life will be awesome. The army will happily use you (and it already has), it is perfectly right and good that you use it right back. Soulex posted:
I had two herniated discs in my lower back. Doc diagnosed me with degenerative disc disease. Several months ago I had another MRI and I now only have 1 slightly bulging disc. Back decompression therapy (reverse hyper and split table traction) fixed me. Your cartilage can repair itself, it just needs circulation. Compressed discs don't get circulation because they're like a sponge that is being kept squeezed all the time. spacetoaster fucked around with this message at 06:29 on Jun 20, 2018 |

Edit: If he has any questions about the field, or if any of you do, hit me up. I spent 4 years working part time fire gigs in various departments of various sizes, and just got hired on full time at one. It's over but I want to get CPT first. I'm about to go on leave and spend some time looking into going to grad school programs. I'm going to try to do the corporate fellowship program and if I cant find a decent paying job then I'll use my GI Bill. So I guess it's less than a year left factoring in 3 months for the corporate fellowship. Being an S4 is the most soul crushing job I've ever had. I've got a demanding XO and all of my subordinates have issues that get in the way of their work at least once a week.

Get to captain. So you can what, tell everyone you were a captain? Meanwhile you're on here every day complaining about how the Army sucks, but you're staying in so you can get a meaningless (to the outside world) title and a pay increase that you won't actually take advantage of.

And then use that as a stepping stone to get something better, because you'll have had real world experience outside the Army you can cite.

Since I went on terminal leave, I have never been asked what rank I was in the army. Ever. And I work as a contractor in the same field, surrounded by literally the only people in the country who would even know whether or not Specialist was higher ranked than Major.
