I can't stop laughing at this guy, he's like a Muppet come to life. Sam the Eagle's slightly methed-out brother.

Can anyone tell me what bird this feather came from? I found it near Morgan Hill, CA about a month ago:

It's a tail feather. Hard to say. Could be a red shafted northern flicker?
|
# ? Jun 18, 2018 20:58 |
That would fit, there are lots of different woodpeckers in the area. Other than obvious things like color and size, what do you look at when trying to make an ID like this?

Only red shafted northern flickers carry Bic lighters like that. Most birds are Zippo folk.

Honestly, I knew it was a tail feather (it's symmetrical. A wing feather, while of similar length, is going to be asymmetrical, with one side shorter than the other), and I looked at birds of California for ones with red tails until I ran into the northern flicker. Didn't realise you got them down there, but apparently they're everywhere. We usually have the yellow-shafted around here, though. Same species, just a regional colour variation. In places where you have both, they breed with each other readily. They are not racist. I like northern flickers. There's one in my neighbourhood that spent the spring sitting on the telephone pole under my kitchen window yelling and drumming, and one of my cockatiels kept yelling back to him.

I got some original birb content from my trip to Beacon Hill Park a few years ago. Not a great photographer, but a birb is a birb. The stars of the show. Bastards who steadfastly refused to show off their fancy tail fans the whole time I was there. Here we have some sort of duck. A duck with a cotton ball stuck to his head. There were several like this, a rare example of duck fashion trends, I assume. What even is this? The feet say duck, but I'm leaning toward extraterrestrial visitor. Absolute unit. In conclusion, Canada is a land of contrasts. Also ducks.
