HAIL TO THE VICTORS!
Good Dog:

quote:

PAW PAW, Mich. — Michigan parents have their dog to thank for leaving a trail of paw prints that police used to track their toddler who went missing for several hours.

Van Buren County police returned 2-year-old Princeton Peake after he escaped his locked home in Paw Paw early Wednesday. Princeton's father, Domonic Peake, says he was panicked while searching the property surrounded by cornfields, woods and swamps. Peake only found his son's sippy cup.

Sheriff Daniel Abbott says the family's pit-boxer mix dog named Apollo may have saved Princeton's life by staying by his side. Police followed Apollo's tracks to find Princeton in a muddy, wooded area up to a mile away. The toddler was found without his diaper, covered in scratches and bug bites.

Abbott had dog food and treats for Apollo delivered to the Peake home Friday.

It earned that dime by thinking a little harder than the other guy, by jumping a little quicker, by being smarter than the smarties and tougher than the toughies!

I saw a seal in the dock at Canary Wharf once and thought some shitbag had thrown a dog in, befire it closed its nostrils and I realised what it was.

Which I was thankful for since I wasn't relishing the thought of getting my kit off and going in for it.

We just gazed into each other's eyes for a while instead. It's really cool seeing random wild animals in the middle of a city.

She snuck in a few years ago and normally hangs around the old Export Dock, because it's near to Billingsgate fish market and they chuck her food, as shown above.

For context, Canary Wharf is 50 miles inland, so at some point she's managed to swim all the way up the Thames and find her way through the locks that separate it from the river (which only open once or twice a week - the docks are long closed, so they only open to let construction barges and the occasional visiting boat in and out), and somehow lucked into the one place where she's guaranteed a basically never-ending supply of free food. At one point they captured her (which is when she found out she was female) and dropped her back into the ocean back up in the Orkneys, and two weeks later she was back.

It's also a minor moment of awesome for London and the Thames - 40 years ago the river was basically devoid of multicellular life, and had been for several centuries. Once they started to properly clean it up, everything from eels to salmon repopulated within years, and now is lively enough to apparently support a fair colony of seals up at The Nore, which is where Sammy probably originated.

You can't really tell from the photo, but lying with only her head above water she was a dead ringer for a whippet-ish dog with a tragic "save me human!" expression.

In actual fact I daresay she was hoping I'd chuck her a fish. Or a salmon en croute, seeing as I was near the restaurants not the market....
