i've been working with a coalition of Austin & Williamson County residents and activists, unofficially called the Shut Down Hutto Coalition, to do exactly what the name says - shut down the T Don Hutto detention center here in Taylor, TX. there is a protest planned for tomorrow at 8AM at the commissioners court in Georgetown, TX.

here's the important thing - we've scared the commissioners. until now, they've refused to publicly discuss the detention center. but with residents from all over the county calling the commissioners to set up meetings demanding to know their stance, and with a protest happening on their front doorstep with nearly 800 interested participants, they're caving under pressure, and will be publicly discussing the Hutto contract. we have reason to suspect they may actually hold a vote on whether to pull out of the contract, which would force ICE and CoreCivic (the private prison corporation that runs the facility) to renegotiate the contract and shut the facility down in the interim. we are also agitating for the immediate release of the detained women to their friends & families and to non-profit organizations that help asylum-seekers.

tomorrow, we need you at the Williamson County Commissioners Court at 8 AM. last time the contract was up for discussion, CoreCivic bused 4 buses worth of employees to fill the room and deny speaking time and seating to opponents of the contract. we need to fill that room, and leave no seat available to fascists and fascist sympathizers.

the contract is currently agenda item #31 on the list. that means it probably will take some time for it to actually come up for discussion (around noon), so be ready for the long haul.

here is a petition to demand they immediately end the contract. currently they're considering giving CoreCivic 6 months' notice, we want them to give the cotract-mandated 90 days instead.

There was a policy change late in the Bush administration that added people turned away at the border or caught and bused back without charges to deportation numbers. 40% of the people who were deported by the Obama administration were in that category.
