Foucault is famous for his concept of the panopticon, or a prison architecture where all the cells are visible at all times from a central observation tower. He frequently uses this as a metaphor for the way in which state power functions, in the form of surveillance, through various state institutions (schools etc as per the list). He frequently compares these things to prisons and vice versa.

Immanuel Kant was a moral absolutist, who argued that actions can be judged as objectively good or bad based on rational criteria, and we are therefore obliged to live by these rules (this obligation to live by certain rules is called deontology). There are some fairly glaring issues with this and the two in the background present one of the critiques of moral absolutism. To be fair to Kant, he did live his life by very strict rules, the dude was a loving freak by all accounts.

Foucault (whose face has been Photoshopped on there) levelled a number of critiques at the idea of absolute or objective Truth. Unrelated but there's a trend recently of badly misrepresenting his critique(s), by people like Jordan Peterson, who claim that simply because Foucault criticised objective Truth he hated science and thought that everything was equally valid.

Sartre is often accused of basically borrowing and fundamentally misunderstanding the philosophy of his immediate forebears and contemporaries (Camus, Nietzsche etc, but also Heidegger and others not listed). There might be more to this idk

Heidegger (who wrote that book) was a nazi, or certainly worked in Nazi Germany and cooperated with Nazis in order to continue his work. People often disregard his philosophy because they think it must be Nazi philosophy, which of course it isn't, and in fact people dispute the man's allegiance to the Nazi party too.

Foucault (depicted) thought the best way to understand things was to trace their history, and used a method of studying history that he called "genealogy". Its complicated (he wrote an entire book just about his methodology) but it basically involved extending the histories of things to include a lot of formerly disregarded stuff.

The Greek myth of Sisyphus was about a guy sentenced to roll a rock up a hill every day only for it to roll back down every night. Modern philosophers (notably Camus) used the myth as a metaphor for the absurdity of life. Idk if the "slows down each time" is relevant other than to tie it in with those memes.

I could be wrong but I think this is a reference to Hegel's holism. Hegel argued that the best way to understand things was to examine them as a whole and to look at their relationships with other wholes, as opposed to looking at the constituent parts as, say, a scientist would in describing a bird as an animal with feathers, which are made up of different specialised cells, etc. Hegel says that everything is fundamentally one unified whole, hence "this AND that".

Plato's cave (which the guy sees in the VR headset) is a story of people chained up in a cave so that all they can see is the blank wall and the shadows that are cast on it from the fire behind them. These shadows are the only things they know and so they constitute "reality" for the prisoners. He went on to say that the world we experience and the things we encounter in it are just the "shadows" of the "real" objects that exist in the realm of the gods or some poo poo.

This one and the next one are explained in the link at the bottom

The EU is trying to implement one of those dumb copyright laws that breaks the internet.

quote:

There are two particular parts of the directive that are worrying tech experts – Articles 11 and 13.

Article 11 would force online platforms like Google and Facebook to pay for links to news content they use. Major publishers have pushed for the reform, seeing it as an urgently needed solution against a backdrop of free online news that has decimated earnings for traditional media companies.

Article 13 would require websites to monitor copyrighted material and would make them legally liable for any copyrighted material shared by users.
It is Article 13, in particular, that has tech experts and companies feeling uneasy.

Critics have warned that this will lead to blanket censorship by tech giants like YouTube Instagram and Twitter who may be forced to use automated blocking.

Gizmodo has warned that even the internet’s beloved memes are at risk as the person who took the original photo may be able to file complaints against any platform that allows it to be used without permission.

15 out of 25 people on the board of Internet-related regulation voted to pass this law, despite tens of thousands of emails and phone calls telling them not to, and that's it's a terrible mistake.

Maybe we will just get a renaissance of home grown memes made with original content?

Imagine every meme unique. Every meme has it's own DNA. A True free world not tethered by corporations. If the people create the memes, then corporations won't be able to use them in their advertising anymore.

Judge Dredd isn't exactly known for being fair when it comes to upholding the law. He's one of those "he's actually the bad guy" protagonist.

I remember reading one where some crazy guy had hacked himself into an elderly couple's car (or something?) and takes them on a wild police chase, ends up crashing and killing himself and the old lady. As the crippled old man is being wheeled away on a stretcher, he thanks Judge Dredd for saving him and Dredd turns around and charges him with aiding and abetting a criminal lol

It's fun watching all the other philosophy majors crawl out of the woodwork for this. My problem is I really want to share these with my 60 year old father, who was a philosophy student at university, but then I'd have to explain "memes" as a concept. And I feel like that could get awkward very quickly.
