Second episode of Outbreak: Nightmare Chronicles is out and jeez, it isn't loving around, even for the moderate difficulty. Died twice so far without being able to save and I'm not sure what the optimal play is here.

There seems to be a lizard guy and plague zombie after the door that needs bolts to open, which is what screwed me this time because I used too much handgun ammo. I think the best play is going to be to just use knife as much as possible, conserve handgun ammo as much as possible, and skip killing the two crawlers in the room with the toolbox/save disc towards that end.

Also on an unrelated note for people going from episode 1 to episode 2: they take away ALL your poo poo. Guns, ammo, consumables, everything, so blow everything you got on the last fight. I honestly wouldn't have come out of the end-of-episode fight with more than a couple bullets but jeez. I hope "you lose all your poo poo" doesn't become a feature of episode transitions.

This does not make sense when, again, aggregate indicia also indicate improvements. The belief that things are worse is false. It remains false.
I need an effortpost of recently released or in-development indie horror titles. I'm starting to fear I'm going to miss something extraordinary.

I've played the Prey DLC (Mooncrash) a little bit lately and, dang, it's really rekindling that tense feeling from the beginning of the game, before you're a powered badass with a billion guns. Sneaking around corners, trying to ambush enemies before they see you, worrying about dwindling resources, makes it feel like the horror game Prey starts out as.

Since someone just mentioned it, could someone clarify for me what's up with Pathologic? So the first one is the first one (duh), HD is just the first game with better graphics, maybe some bugfixes? And 2 is a sort of reboot/reimagining?

I ask because I have the original Pathologic but never played it, and I'm trying to figure out if I should play that, get HD and play that instead, or just wait and play 2 when it exists.

Danaru

何 ??
Pathologic 1 and HD are the exact same game, except HD has an actually readable translation and dialogue. 2 is going to be a brand new game about the same events AFAICT.

With that said, absolutely play Pathologic HD. Pathologic 2 will be an entirely different beast from what I've seen.

Yeah, part of why they put out the HD version with the new translation was because Path2 was ending up substantially different from the original

I had some game in my wishlist called Dispatcher and it's apparently some sort of first person, survival horror thing with multiplayer? Well it's on sale for 50 cents so I bought it.

After I made my character (a pilot who was a porn start in the past) I gave it a try single player. I fumbled around picking up batteries, saw a monster, tried to defend myself in any way but only managed to make the character fly the bird at said monster before getting eaten.

I guess that little laugh was worth 50 cents?

That game had a surprising amount of replay value just based on how things could go differently depending on minor choices of yours. You might have had Character A be mean (or too nice) to Character B, which gets Character C killed and later makes life difficult for Character D because Character C wasn't alive to help

I thought Until Dawn presented the illusion of choice very well because even though each character can only die at select points in the story, when they can die isn't immediately obvious to the player, so every decision feels tense. I hope Supermassive is done with whatever the gently caress else they're doing instead of making Until Dawn 2 because there's so many more possibilities for the concept beyond just one game.

I'd like Until Dawn to turn into an anthology series like American Horror Story (but less Ryan Murphy), where every game is a completely different story that may be a different time period.

I was enjoying the route the story was going before the meta horror came in, it really deflated afterwards. Is this the new flavour of the month for twists?

I’ll take it literally every time over “no, you killed them!”

The Suffering was so much better than it had any right being. Fantastic gameplay and gunplay, a sense that you could actually accomplish stuff and help people if you decided to try (I like that in a game, specifically, over something like a horror novel or movie), and really cool monsters.

I think the US Government?

Edit: In October 2008, the PC version of the game was released as freeware by the United States Air Force on FileFront (no longer available).[50] On September 8, 2017, both The Suffering and The Suffering: Ties That Bind were released on GOG.com as DRM-free titles.[51]

So I guess they're on GOG which is cool because the first was great. I never understood why the second went down the Halo school of limiting my weapons when the first had you carry an entire arsenal in your back pocket.

Stan Winston Studios helped with the monster design as well. The Suffering could be made into one hell of a horror film.

I bought that a while ago and need to finish it (not a glowing recommendation I know but I really don't spend a lot of time playing games in general lately) and there's really no horror to it as far as I can tell, but it does have some interesting storytelling, and good voiceover for a change.

I picked up Receiver finally after it sat in my wishlist for years, and it almost works as a horror game, definitely tense. Has anyone taken the gun mechanics from that and put it into more of a proper game? As fun as it is to play for a few minutes, the procedural generation stuff gets old and there's not a lot of variety to anything after a couple hours.

Oh and picked up Stories Untold, I love it so far. That's another cheap Steam grab if it looks interesting to anyone.

Last minute before sleep recommendation: Space Beast Terror Fright. I got gifted Desolate and for being an early access alpha I'm really enjoying it. Now I'll tell you up front I love survival crafting games. This one, so far as I can tell in my few hours of playtime, doesn't let you build structures. It does however give you a space and allow you to customize it. The story revolves around a terrible accident that makes an island get all hosed up. The island is covered in anomalies, zombie-like creatures, mutated wildlife, and opportunistic raiders. Think S.T.A.L.K.E.R mixed with a bit of Fallout. Also it has 4 player co-op. There are also random statuses that happen on the island, like maybe an ice vortex will cause temperatures to drop on the whole island, or paranormal activity will start happening at an increased rate, causing aural and visual hallucinations of ghosts and poo poo. It's pretty neat. You might check it out.

So I picked up Layers of Fear when it was free a weekend or two ago, and have since played through it twice to get two different endings. I was far more impressed with it in the first half an hour than I have been since. The art design is absolutely gorgeous, and I love the various pieces of artwork scattered around (and even recognized more than a few), but the voice acting - while minimal - is pretty bad, and the jump scares are annoying. I have to admit, there's so much packed into the game that there's a lot of replayability, especially if you're deliberately aiming for a specific ending because each one has its own requirements that shut out the other two endings; however, as much as I want to play through to get the last ending and all the remaining items to fill out my achievements, it feels like such a total slog.

The first time through, I enjoyed the atmosphere, and even got startled by some of the jump scares. The second time, however, I desperately wished there was a way to skip the dialogue scenes, and having to sit through the "you might have seizures" warning and sloooooow intro every single time I start up the game doesn't entice me to continue playing.

The ghost child slamming straight into a bookcase was the best part. There's also a section in the nursery where you complete a puzzle by putting a key into a miniature carousel and turn it on. You start slowly rotating while things get all spooky and ghost dolls fill the room. One of them repeatedly bashes its head into the side of the bed, and while I assume it was meant to be scary, I was in stitches.

I also don't especially enjoy playing games where the protagonist ends up being an irredeemable dickbag. I'm not sure why, but it just takes some of the fun out of things. The second time I played through, I got the self-portrait ending, where I guess this goober gets away with dismembering his wife's corpse and gets his artwork put up in a museum somewhere.

The language used in both written notes and dialogue scenes was way, way too modern for this to have taken place however long ago it took place. Does anyone even know?

edit: Has anyone purchased the DLC? Is it worth $5?

"Just prior to launch, the studio announced that they’d have to censor some of the more mature content in the game. This was ultimately cancelled due to unspecified legal troubles. They then later announced that Agony Unrated, a separate version of the game with restored content, was also planned for release. As of today, that’s been cancelled too. The developer announced that the company is currently facing financial problems “due to technical and legal reasons.” As a result, they need to cancel Agony Unrated. The developer remains vague what these technical — but more importantly — what the legal complications are."

Maybe I'm being just a little unfair if this is at least real, but everything these dudes say comes off like some "Oh won't you heeeelp us against this censorship gamers???" :jerkbag:
