Breaking Mayberry is a comedy/criticism podcast where two guys (one of which is me) go back and watch every episode of the Andy Griffith Show to understand why its such a big deal. What made this show such a cultural touchstone, and why is it always brought up by conservatives as "the way things should be?" Along the way, we learn about the turbulent '60s, come up with fan theories, and explore the weird world of Mayberry. The comedy holds up - the lessons not so much.

New Episodes

09: You're Lucky It's Columbus Day, Al Capone!
This time around, Breaking Mayberry covers S01Ep17 - "Alcohol and Old Lace," talking about Andy and Barney's crackdown on the controlled substances in Mayberry County, NC. We brought on freelance cannabis writer Russ Smith to talk about some parallels to today's most contentious Type-1 narcotic, and we get into the fallout of the war on drugs, the Federal v. State law debacle, and some extreme parts of class warfare.

Yes, this is still a podcast about The Andy Griffith Show, why do you ask?

10: This Is Not At All How The Stock Market Works

Another round of Mayberry goodness and this time we have a special guest - Joseph McCarthy! (No seriously, we talk about McCarthyism and blacklisting in this one, turns out the Andy Griffith show was not immune from it.)
First up, yet another episode about a stranger coming into town and getting under Andy's skin, but this one has like 30% more bluegrass - it's S01EP19 "Mayberry on Record"

Next, it's the fascist reign of Barney Fife we've all been wating for when Barney takes over as acting sheriff in S01EP20 - "Andy Saves Barney's Morale" and to be honest, this one is so dark in context that we end up kinda loving it.

Henshin History is a podcast of tokusatsu heroes, from the beginning to now, and of three friends whose lives have been utterly ruined by spandex superheroes starting a perilous journey through nearly 50 years of tokusatsu history, with the occasional detour for context.

Most Recent Episode: Episode 25: You See, Ivan - Cyborg Soldier gives us the warm-up to the Kingdom of Yomi: The Mutant Warriors arc! It's some time-travel nonsense that also expands upon the origins of Cyborg 001/Ivan Whisky and his terrible, no good, very bad father; who the show attempts to walk back, much to our indignation. Also, Van and I betray each other constantly.

Next Episode: Kamen Rider 1971 - Dr. Shinigami finally gets his proper sendoff.

Wow gang, we're up to episode 7 of the Steven Tyler Book Club! In May we doubled our listeners and I really want to keep up the pressure. The momentum. The Comedy. The stylerpod.com lifestyle. I'm talking about pushing to the limit, hitting 200...300...350 listeners.

EPISODE 7: COCAINE!!!

In this episode we discuss:
-the little kid from Two and a Half Men loves black people (me too. I love them.)
-Cocaine.
-Smuggling cum.

If you're looking to get into the pod, I think the first few minutes of this episode are a pretty good idea of what the shows like.

SEX ARCHIE

Episode 35: Abandon All Hope Ye Who Enter Here
This episode covers Chapter 35: Brave New World by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa; directed by Steven A. Adelson
The finale is here! After the tension breaks, the teens are left to pick up the pieces. Attorney McCoy corners a specific market. Hal has company. Hiram finally makes friends. Also features the second chapter of All the Snakes of the Forest!

Memory Lane 5: Unsold Archie Pilot (1964)
Riverdale may be the first live-action Archie series on TV, but it wasn't the first attempt. Well, neither is the one we're talking about, but it's the oldest one we could find. This mid-60s attempt at adaptation was actually pretty good for its time (if you're into that sort of thing). Should Weatherbee be one of Fred's patients? Is lying contagious? Who stole Jughead's identity and where did they hide the body?

A Yard Sprinkler of Rage - What We've Learned So Far
We're not actually recapping any AG episodes this time, but we thought it might be a good time at the halfway mark to unburden ourselves and talk through some of the things we've learned and observed on our journey so far. Join us as Dan introduces us to an unsung hero of the Red Scare, Marty introduces us to newspaper comic strips, and in general we make some half-thought-through ideas.

Brainwash a Child, Andy!

We're back on the recap track with episode 18 of Season 1, "Andy the Marriage Counselor." Dan and Marty needed an adult in the room for this one, so we got special help. Andy tries to help a feuding couple and he does it in the worst way possible, and we all lose our minds.

It's Christmas, Here's Two Dollars, Go Away.
Fellow goon and podcaster Joe Wade from the show Christmas Creeps joins us as we talk about S01EP11, "The Christmas Story", the only holiday episode in the entire Andy Griffith canon. For our Christmas in July episode, we talk about the surprising connection between Aunt Bee and Rage Against The Machine, and also yell about Mayberry's apparent holiday crime spree.

These People Are Adults!

In this episode, we learn that Barney Fife is incredibly easy to seduce - first by a gentleman conman in a real "Silence of the Lambs"-type scenario, and second by Andy's girlfriend in some romantic misunderstanding high-school teen scheme bullshit that I hated so, so, loving much.

A tangled skein of bad opinions, the hottest takes, and the the world's most misinformed nonsense. Do not engage with me, it's useless, and better yet, put me on ignore.

The Spoony Bard's Aural Theatre

Last year my partner and I did a multiple-episode radio-drama-esque reenactment of Final Fantasy IV and Fallout 1. We're currently working on a 9-episode run of Soul Blazer, but in the meantime I wanted to try this other project out. I think this is going to appeal to a real niche of person -- like me. You know, there's that saying...if you can't find what you want, then make it. Or... it's something like that. The message is clear.

This is a kind of radio drama reenactment of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. Yeah, the real time-strategy.

Basically, this is an attempt to adapt nostalgia into a slightly different medium. We've described our podcast as a kind of "let's play for the ears" and that may be the most true in this example. Anyway, maybe it sucks, maybe not, but if you like it, let me know or let me know how I can improve it.

15: A Rare Case of Terducken Polio
This podcast ep breaks Marty and Dan a little as they deal with AG episodes ranging from needlessly convoluted to unbelievably dull. First, in episode 23, "The New Doctor", Andy is jealous of a new young doctor in town that he thinks is trying to steal Ellie. In the studio, we stumble upon a piece of Queer Lit history and wonder how many Opies it would take to beat one Barney Fife in hand-to-hand combat. Next, our spirits are broken by "Andy and Opie, Housekeepers,"an episode we're not going to describe here because it sucks and is so insanely boring and we'd rather be talking about literally anything else oh god please help.

16: Andy Proves That He's Daddy
In this episode, both hosts are absolutely furious, but at different times. It's a real bad cop/also a bad cop situation. In Season 1, Episode 25, "A Plaque For Mayberry", the town of Mayberry ignores an alcoholic's obvious cries for help, and we find a Southern-ism that makes even less sense than usual.
Next, Season 1 Episode 26, "The Inspection," it finally looks like our' prayers will be answered and an authority figure will finally hold Andy Taylor accountable.... haha, no, this show's just gonna kiss his bumpkin rear end like it always does.

17: Swarmed By Horny Farmhands
Look, this Andy Griffith episode starts off boring and benign and then it turns into THE MOST SEXIST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN ON TV. HOLY poo poo.

Episode 13: Good Very Good Excellent Evan
Great music, great videos, in three very different styles! Robo rhythms with Walk-Smash-Walk, turn-of-the-Millennium-Sega action with Metropolis Circuit, and pixel art delights with Now Or Never. Also, we learn about the great quality you can find with a premium garage door opener.

I don't know how many listeners I have here, but The Secret Cinema has been on unintended hiatus for a major reason: Carrie and I broke up! I'm moving from Illinois to Michigan at the end of the month, and fully plan on getting the podcast started back up once I'm settled.

In the meantime, I contributed the doc for the most recent episode of the The F-Plus, so please listen to that (it's about Topix): https://thefpl.us/episode/286

Genre: Advice, Jobs
Release Schedule: bi-Weekly-ish
Twitter: https://twitter.com/WWYHMPodcast
Email us: hiremepodcast@gmail.com

Why Won't You Hire Me? is a podcast about the stories of job hunting and job searching - told by people who are actually doing it right now. Also covering topics regarding labor issues, employment relations, and other hiring and business issues.

Episodes

01: Do It For The Culture
The first episode of Why Won't You Hire Me kicks off with talking about what businesses really mean when they say they hire for "cultural fit" and why that can be a bad thing. Then, SF Bay Area Data Scientist Esme Gaisford joins to talk about the best ways to ask technical questions, looking for diversity when walking into an interview, and the kinds of questions she hates being asked.

02: Can I Get A Break For One Week?
This episode, I share a job interview story from an obvious scam, and am joined in studio by my oldest friend, Chris Cunningham. Chris is a composer-turned-event-planner in the Bay Area who recently left a position with NASA and is currently pursuing work in the Event Management/Event Sales field. Chris and I talk about the decision to leave a "cool" job, the obsession with jobs as value status, turning your hobby into a job, and the reasons to skip your high school reunion.

03: Pre-Post-Grad

It's a special back-to-school episode of Why Won't You Hire Me, as I'm is joined by PhD candidate Elizabeth de Marigny to talk about the complex world of academia. Elizabeth explains the complicated process of getting hired at a university, all the unknown hidden catches of applying, and the painstaking effort of 3-D printing replicas of ancient artifacts. All this, plus I talk about the evils of unpaid internships.

Mao Zedong, 'Combat Liberalism', 1937 posted:

Liberalism is a manifestation of opportunism and conflicts fundamentally with Marxism. It is negative and objectively has the effect of helping the enemy; that is why the enemy welcomes its preservation in our midst. Such being its nature, there should be no place for it in the ranks of the revolution.

at a time when Liberalis americanum somehow manages to threaten the existence of the entire human race through its own negligence and lack of conviction while also suffering its death throes and relinquishing all legitimate claim to power

Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, 'Two Utopias', 1912 posted:

Hence the striking, incredible weakness of the liberals in politics, their absolute impotence. Hence the endless series of equivocations, falsehoods, hypocrisies and cowardly evasions in the entire policy of the liberals, who have to play at democracy to win the support of the masses but at the same time are deeply anti-democratic, deeply hostile to the movement of the masses...

in an era when four media conglomerates control 90% of every piece of entertainment an average person is likely to consume in their lifetime

Antonio Gramsci, 'Newspapers and the Workers', 1916 posted:

And so every day this same worker is able to personally see that the bourgeois newspapers tell even the simplest of facts in a way that favors the bourgeois class and damns the working class and its politics.

it's time to take a baseball bat to the knees of a seminal piece of political media, one that defines SUCCin' and has shaped the perspective of an entire generation of comfortably milquetoast ~*CENTRIST*~ coastal elitists: THE WEST WING

myself and fellow goon WampaLord are almost certianly not the right people to do this, but nobody else has jumped on this fuckin grenade so you know what maybe give us a listen and then post post post here making fun of our verbal tics and our lack of command of socialist theory.

You do NOT need to have seen the West Wing to listen and enjoy our melodoisu General American baritones.

Episode 0 - Introduction can be skipped if you don't have need of :words: describing the show's basic premise, characters, and place in American cultural history! That's right! Don't listen!

Episode 1 - "Pilot" is where we actually talk about things that Happen, In the show! :wow:

Tara and Andrew Versus The Scarecrow Video Movie Guide

Available on:
iTunes / Google Play / Website / RSS

Genre: Movie talk

Duration: Around a half-hour, give or take

Release: Every (other, for the time being) Tuesday

What this?
Seattle's Scarecrow Video is one of the longest-lasting independently run video stores in America, with over 120,000 different titles in their catalog, ranging from the mainstream to the incredibly eclectic and difficult to find. In this podcast my wife and I randomly select a movie that neither of us has seen before from the guide that they published back in 2004, watch it, do some research on it (when possible), and then discuss what we thought and learned.

Episode 38 -- Nico and Dani
I've been lax in posting the links to episodes as they've been coming out, but all of that changes now, maybe! In this episode we watch a Spanish coming of age drama that has way more mutual masturbation in it than either of us expected, we talk about and provide relatively useless live commentary for one of Kris Straub's "Local 58" videos, and we voice our support for bashing the fash. Fun!
