The 30 min RR session was not nearly as bad as I feared, also Steel City John Brown Club were invited to talk about their org and ask if anyone were interested in joining

This past weekend, several members of Charlottesville DSA traveled to volunteer at a Remote Area Medical clinic in Emporia, VA. We took part in an effort that treated 740 people, providing (I don't know how they calculate this) over $400,000 in treatment. People came from miles around both to volunteer and be treated--every local hotel was sold out (they even sold one of our reserved rooms because we arrived late) and patients were waiting in the parking lot from at least 8:00pm the night before. Despite my awareness of these issues, it didn't occur to me how many people could afford to travel to the clinic, but couldn't afford or access medical care due to lack of insurance and high costs. Some of our patients were healthcare workers themselves, coming in in their scrubs, and I talked to one schoolteacher who was there for vision care. An org called FeedMore set up a free snack bar, because last year there were so many people, waiting so long and not wanting to lose their place in line, that they had people passing out from lack of water and food. A great deal of the treatment was dental and vision. People could only get one service per day due to time and labor constraints, but could come both days. (I have no idea how many teeth were pulled.) I was expecting two days of long grueling shifts, but it wasn't very difficult. The weather was very hot and humid, but we were operating out of an air-conditioned high school. (There's a much bigger clinic in Wise, VA that is a literal field hospital because it's so big. Wise is on the "tip of the boot" of VA close to the borders of WV, TN, and KY.) I got off lucky because Medical assigned me to a patient who was on oxygen and needed constant attendance. I tried to make up for it by seeking out some more grunt work (packing food, moving chairs, etc.) the next day. I wish I had some cool pictures to share, but I wanted to respect the patients' privacy. I did get some pictures of the other orgs that sent volunteers, including the FeedMore folks, dental and pharmacy students from VCU, and orgs devoted to nutrition, substance abuse issues, mental health, even spaying and neutering pets. I also got Narcan training. (But the real heroes were the people who camped outside the main entrance to hand out Bibles and prayer books. As you know, recent tragedies have dangerously depleted the nation's supply of thoughts and prayers, and Bibles are extremely difficult to obtain in the rural South.) I've decided I want to do at least one of these a year. They're doing one in the town where I was born next year. I wonder how many socialists my parents will let camp out in their basement. There was a town hall with Bernie where a guy really well known for those medical events did a good deal of speaking. Crazy stuff. Seconding the request for more info when you can.

It was organized through a friend of one of our co-chairs. As far as I know, all you really need to do is make sure everyone signs up for the same clinic, same role, same shift. (We were all "General Support," i.e. people without medical training willing to do grunt work.) General support tends to fill up quickly, so ideally you should be looking at least 6 months out. Their website will show you clinic schedules through the rest of the calendar year, and you can look them up by state as well. Then you just organize transportation and lodging on your end. For us it was a simple as booking a few hotel rooms. This was my first RAM clinic ever, but AFAIK they all provide meals to all volunteers. (Breakfast is at 5:00am, lunch at noon, dinner at 3:00pm.) To give you an idea of what you might be doing as General Support: registering patients. Escorting patients from place to place. A huge amount of work on the final day is just packing up and, if you're using a space like a school, restoring it to its original condition.
