the distinction between real leftism and idpol has absolutely nothing to do with 'having minority candidates', and the fact that the two get intentionally conflated, is itself idpol.

idpol is literally 'the politics of identity', or, a worldview that places a strong emphasis on organization on the basis of and within specific groups & subgroups, gender race etc. This comes at the expense of common foundations of political organization, including class and ideology, and idpol is therefore in opposition to both.

Which is great for rich people and corporations, because it means they get to pretend to be progressive without facing issues like 'labor exploitation' or 'imperialism', since class struggle and anti-imperialism is hermetically sealed from any wider struggle for emancipation. You throw some money for a float in a pride parade, and you're 'good' now.

It affirms rich liberals' own moral superiority, without threatening the exploitative system from which they benefit, and is therefore a favorite of not only 'enlightened elites' such as tech millionaires and movie stars, but members of the minority community who either aspire or are part of the global 1%, and who fear labor agitation as much as rich white people do.

Cortez didn't run on any of that poo poo, she didn't run on tokenism, she ran on class issues and and anti-corruption angle. Which is why she won, and why she's not an empty suit.

Gonna have to disagree with this, but don't wanna start up another succ sinkhole.

please stop making cantor comparisons, it's dumb and misses the point

cantor was a national level dick swinger who largely ignored his district who got kicked out not just by the same tea party shitheads abandoning him and switching to support his primary challenger (a cut of shitheads from coulter to ingrahm), but also by left leaning independents coming in to tear down statues to his idiot face because virginia only had a semi-closed primary

crowley actually focused on his district and playing local power broker so much (to build donation channels) that most people outside his district or the party itself dont know who the gently caress he is, he had a complete slate of support with the only real dissenting voice being cynthia nixon, and the primaries themselves were pretty much rigged specifically to prevent primary challenges

it's a way bigger upset than cantor

Yeah he was the head of the Queens Democractic Committee and man, he was an institution. This is gonna reverberate here for years.

Crowley didn't exactly have his ear on the ground in the 14th tho, he lived in DC and went out of his way to ignore sectors in the district that were only growing

quote:

A Democratic club in Queens is snubbing veteran Rep. Joe Crowley by endorsing his primary rival, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, for Congress.

The Pan-American Democratic Association’s support of the insurgent is a double slap at Crowley, who is also the longtime chairman of the Queens Democratic Party.

“Ocasio-Cortez is a better representative of our neighborhood. She’s more progressive. She’s not behind the banks, insurance companies and Wall Street,” said William Salgado, chairman of the club, which covers Jackson Heights, Elmhurst and Corona.

First elected to Congress in 1998, Crowley hasn’t had a serious primary in 14 years. His 14th congressional district takes in parts of Queens and The Bronx.

Crowley, No. 4 in leadership in the House Democratic caucus, is considered a candidate to become the next Democratic leader and possibly House Speaker if Nancy Pelosi steps down.

Salgado said Crowley, 56, doomed any chances of getting an endorsement when he blew off a debate sponsored by his club at the Jackson Heights Jewish Center on Monday.

He said about 200 people showed up and many were disappointed that Crowley wasn’t there.

“Ocasio-Cortez showed up,” Salgado said. “A lot of people didn’t like that Crowley didn’t appear.”

You want specifics? She's a naive fraud. When asked during a debate whether Crowley would support her over a Republican if she won, he said he would without any hesitation. Her response to the same question, in reverse? "I represent not just my campaign but a movement. We govern ourselves democratically,” she said. “I would be happy to take that question to our movement for a vote." That's utterly foolish. You cannot on the one hand say that you oppose the GOP agenda and on the other hand say that you're unsure whether you would throw support behind a candidate running against the GOP in a general election. (This, of course, being the same species of fraud that Trump espoused in 2016, when he said he was for the GOP and its policies but would also run against it as an independent if he did not get the nomination. Birds of a feather and all of that...) She is calling for the eradication of ICE, which misses the point so badly that she is actually being used to garner support for the GOP in swing districts. Sessions' immigration policies are cruel and hateful. But it is ignorant to call for the eradication of an agency charged with essential homeland security functions. (You know the agency charged with intervening and stopping people like, say, Mohamed Atta? Yeah, ICE, and you'll hear her dumb half baked hot take a lot on Fox News to rally the GOP troops.) The call is to return the agency to its proper role and course of conduct, not to eliminate it. As to the notion that she will bring anything to her district, Congress does not work that way. Crowley, given his seniority and the members who relied on him to advance legislative priorities for their districts out of the caucus, had the clout to bring change to the district (and did...). She will have no power, no voice, and has already alienated her caucus (see the comments above). The symbolism here is great. Otherwise, I'm with [name deleted]- this is a stunning disappointment, a Christine O'Donnell analogue on the left.

When people like this :qq: about a candidate, you know you've got a winner.

They missed their chance at ratfucking their way out of this, since the headlines saying AOC won have already run. The time to pull back-room trickery was last week or the week before, and they didn't take her seriously enough to think they even needed to (SEE: Crowley not even showing up to scheduled debates)
