When a tree grows, it is soft and pliable. But when it's dry and hard, it dies.

Hardness and strength are death's companions. Flexibility and softness are the embodiment of life.

That which has become hard shall not triumph.

A socialist just won a seat and the DSA, whatever you score them on your personal purity test, are actually growing and becoming something resembling a meaningful political party. In the wake of 2016, Bernie's platform and most importantly universal healthcare are finally getting traction among the electorate and the business as usual Democrats are in a precarious position now that challenges from the left are becoming a thing. Had Hillary won the election things would have simply kept degrading too slowly for people to actually care, punctuated by occasional social policy bones being tossed out.

the near future is Democrats saying we can’t have healthcare because the right wing Supreme Court will just strike it down anyway.

More realistically people should be making GBS threads on the fact that having a socialist in a Congress seat isn't gonna change much, and they'll probably end up being a Democrat wearing red. This is just a sequel to Syriza but on an even lesser scale with a predictably similar outcome.

I don't think that a political party getting blackmailed by a neoliberal institution that controls their economic fate is necessarily equivalent, or even similar.

The US can, after all, print its own money.

i mean you're gonna die one day anyways, so what's wrong with primarying a bunch of lovely democrats? they deserve to go down in flames. much deserved. might as well have some fun while you're stuck on this backwater planet that the big communist space empires that MOST DEFINITELY EXIST have totally forgotten about after they briefly contacted j. posadas in 1959.

you're comparing the possibility of a first open socialist in the american congress in recent to the inability of a tiny nation to resist the full power of the entire financial capital complex, tp say that a historic election victory is an irrelevance. whatever the gently caress you're on about, it doesn't make any kind of sense to me

there's a pretty good sci-fi story in a recent analog about the climate going to hell, and idiocracy-like climate-change deniers establishing an authoritarian regime in america that blames the problem on weather satellites. the story is from the perspective of technicians who have been forcibly conscripted into operating satellite-killing weapons to hunt down the remaining weather satellites and destroy them.

:backtowork: "we've got another one of those weather-manipulating thingies! destroy it!!! or else!!!"

pretty bleak but the technicians fool the morons in charge of the program by destroying old junk military satellites and by using various electronic warfare tricks like "masking" the real ones.
