I found a new podcast I've really been enjoying. https://darknetdiaries.com Every episode is a different story about computer security/hacks/leaks/pen testing, etc. I found it to be a lot like the stories in Kevin Mitnick's books. I'm not super computer savvy myself, so this might be quite basic for those in the know, but it's approachable for the regular Joe. I find the show quite entertaining and informative. The host just recently quit his day job to pursue this full time. I'm guessing he could use more listeners, so why not check it out?

I'm going to put in a thumbs-down and say it's overproduced.
Also, I find it hard to believe that the phone companies don't do anything about fraudulent charges. In my experience they are well aware of these things, and are perfectly happy to reverse charges to pay-per-minute numbers.

I'll give it another episode or two, but does it ever go into actual investigation or anything? As opposed to finding an article on wired.com and reading it out loud with sound effects and music by The Mysterious Breakmaster Cylinder?

But thank you for the recommendation anyway!

Double post from the Historical, Informational, and Educational Podcast Megathread. Let me know if that's not kosher to do, but I figure if I can get this guy more exposure it's a win for me as a fan of the show and a win for the guy making this great content:

The Wild Episode: Found this a few weeks back and it seems to be a new series. There are only 6 episodes, and the update schedule seems to be every few weeks. It's an excellent show about interesting animals with a slight, perhaps coincidental, focus on extinction and conservation. The production values are really good and the shows are finely crafted. If anyone has even a passing interest in zoology I really recommend it, each episode I've heard has been great and you won't go wrong starting at the first one or where ever. Episodes are 20-30 minutes long so it's really easy to check out if it's to your liking. I'm hoping the guy gets listeners because it's a really great show.

The general policy across carriers is that this is the kind of thing that they're happy to reverse exactly one time. I could see a phone company fighting it if the person had a history of trying to get stuff like that reversed. That doesn't necessarily mean they didn't get conned, just that their carrier decided that they had hit their limit on mulligans.

I seem to remember at least one episode that tells some stories from the perspective of the people investigating, and stopping an intrusion. But, mostly it's just telling stories. Sorry to jump in like this guy's, and I'm not sure if this is the right thread, but I need help IDing a podcast I heard about on the radio that sounded really good.

It was a comedy podcast where the hosts would spin a wheel to decide whose phone they could go through (messages, search history, camera roll etc) and riff on.

I thought it was called something like Phone Hack but I can't turn anything up. It's killing me. Please help! This was on Australian radio and it might be an Australian show. Cheers

-Englands 1990 campaign after the the Liverpool FA Deaths
-Diego Maradonna/Hand of God

I found an intriguing new little podcast earlier this week called Tropical Moon and binge-listened to it while driving to my parents house. I think the presentation and humor a bit like Welcome to Night Vale mixed with a bit of Monty Python, a tiny amount of Lake Woebegone, and maybe a bit of LSD. Tropical Moon presents the goings-on on Tropical Moon, a very surreal yet cohesive world, generally following one of the residents, Albie Planet. Despite what the author says I recommend listening in order, some things will make more sense that way.

I have a feeling that this is one of those "I LOVE this Podcast!"/"I HATE this Podcast!" sort of things.

Do we have a true crime podcast mega thread? Figure we could use one but I ain't the one to do it
I think Casefile is the average most embraced least criticized one, right? (I'm not bothering with last house on the left or whatever sorry). It's not quite as stylish as Sword and Scale but it's got far less dumb takes for midwestern white moms about schizophrenia or the true nature of criminals or w/e and as far as I know it doesn't feature a lazy rear end in a top hat host who just like...makes episodes where he plays the full audio of some 3 guys 1 hammer (whatever that was called) type tape

My only casefilm criticism is drat the writing could use some more editing. It's tedious as all hell hearing Aussie dude decide to launch into like ten minutes of unnecessary set up where he describes the history of that region of Australia or worse decides to summarize the Iraq war. I get why stuff like that is there but they oughta cut some of the fat off these eps more often. Especially when a lot of the case files just kind of feel like they end up redundant in their subject matter but I guess that's inevitable as you churn out more.

There's other good true crime podcasts but I have yet to find one that is episodic like Casefile other than Swindled. I would recommend these:

Death in Ice Valley - 10 part series about the Isdal Woman. They don't come to any conclusion about who she was, but they do a good job going over all the evidence and did some DNA and tooth isotope testing that hadn't been done before.

Heaven's Gate - 10 part series about, shockingly, Heaven's Gate. Goes deep into the history of the group, and is given an interesting perspective by host Glynn Washington, who grew up in the Worldwide Church of God, a millenarian cult himself.

In The Dark - Season 1 is a 9 part series about the Jacob Wetterling case. I grew up in a small Minnesota town, and was only a little younger than Jacob, and so I vividly remember much of this as it happened. Was infuriating to hear about just how mismanaged the investigation was. Haven't listened to season 2, but I hear it is good.

Swindled - Episodic series, 15 episodes so far, about "embezzlements, corruption, fraud, con men, and ponzi schemes".

The Wonderland Murders - Ongoing series, 6 episodes so far, about the Wonderland Murders, a technically unsolved multiple homicide involving a drug gang, a drug kingpin, and legendary porn star John Holmes.

west cork. mentioned this before, really good but only on audible.

Someone knows something. I loved season 2, about a blue collar canadian couple. It starts out looking fairly straightforward, but over the episodes you get to know the people around the victim and the victim herself and it gives you a very different view into their lives.

Small town murder is an ok podcast where a stand up comedian tells a murer story to his colleague. These guys take a LONG time to get to the actual murder or even the story, but that's part of their thing. I wish it was easier to find the good episodes.

oh yeah: a very fatal murder :p

I guess up and vanished was ok. Don't like the host for some reason.

Yeah, it was a bit longer than it needed to be, but it kinda felt like they were trying to be...I dunno what to call it...the podcast of record for the case? Like, they were going to bring up any theory that was at least plausible, even if there was no evidence just to have it out in the open.

Towards the end, they settled on the idea that she was involved in intelligence work and then set about trying to figure out on whose behalf she was working. The results of the isotope analysis, age estimation, and haplogroup testing were, if nothing else, worth the listen. And aside from taking her DNA profile and trying to match relatives via commercial databases like the cops did with the Original Night Stalker / East Area Rapist, it feels like there's not much else that could possibly be done, at least with current technology.

As a full exploration of the case, likely the last that will be done before she passes from living memory, I felt it did a good job.

For true-crime adjacent stuff, there's also Criminal. I like it a lot better since the episodes are typically self-contained. I'm not that big a fan of the twisty-turny episodic stories. Criminal is also good in that it takes up tangential topics from time to time.

Also the true crime tragicomedy answer : Trump, Inc. (one big problem being it's a work-in-progress, even for the finished 'season').

On another topic, anyone know what happens that makes shows suddenly duplicate episodes? Inward Empire & My History Can Beat up Your Politics just 'updated' with a bunch of old episodes in iTunes*. I guess it's because they switched their back end or changed the feed somehow.

*Yes, iTunes - when I listen at home it's on a ten-year-old laptop that's pretty much just used to play podcasts and videos.

I was quite frustrated by The Gateway since the content seemed pretty thin compared to something like Last Podcast On The Left but I think the final episode made it all worth it. That speech Swan gave about "the ingredients of a cult" (which gets even worse if you recall she's giving it while her followers are literally surrounding her and the interviewer) changed my perception of her from "web-savvy huckster" to "actually dangerous person". And combining that with pointing out we're living in an era where people have the means to spread and believe in whatever fringe bullshit speaks to them made me think "we are so hosed".
