I a dumb idiot who likes asymmetric dudes on a map games and is interested in Cthulhu wars after reading about it in this thread despite already having other asymmetric dudes on a map games. What is the difference between the different versions? Which should I pick up? Could someone dissuade me from buying a bunch of dumb plastic?

Technically there's a variant, but it's infinitely better with more. 4-5 is the sweet spot IMO, 3 is acceptable and I'm still to actually use my 6-8 player Earth map. Onslaught 2 and 3 printings should be v1.5, which comes with the revised player boards and spellbooks. If you do get a v1.0, probably second hand at this time, the errata are freely available. Onslaught 2 is long since out, Onslaught 3 is at the packing and assembly phase right now. Cthulhu Wars is a very good asymmetric DOAM game and exceptional at getting people to say "Ooh!" The only thing that stops me recommending it without reservation is the cost, which realistically will not end with the base box - the bare minimum you'll ultimately want is another two or three factions to add variety.

I went back and forth on buying it for a while because of the cost, but I am super glad I did. I've played many of the other dudes on a map games, and while it's early days I could see Cthulhu Wars becoming my favourite. It just seems to be super tightly balanced plus the different factions all play so differently from one another. It seems to have nearly all the positives that had made Chaos in the Old World my previous favourite in the genre, while being a whole lot more fluid due to the fact that the map is more connected and movement is far more affordable. Definitely the price is a factor. I bought the base game and one expansion faction, and will probably proxy rather than buy some of the others since they are exorbitant to get shipped to NZ. I'm also finding it an incredibly easy/streamlined game to do via PBF, so if there were enough people interested I could start another game so anyone who is interested in trying it for themselves could give it a go.

I would also add that it takes an eldritch butt-ton of shelf space, too. I think the High Priest expansion is another good one. I have that, Windwalker, Sleeper, and Opener of the Way. So I found a local boardgame cafe and spent an evening there with my wife - we tried out Sagrada, Azul and Jaipur and it was good fun. I've had a history of getting excited about and buying games but without really paying attention to what either my wife or my only occasional opponent wants to play, so they sit gathering dust until I sell them on. With that in mind, the boardgame cafe seems like an amazing opportunity to litmus test things before purchasing. With that in mind, I would like to ask for suggestions on a 2 player direct-conflict scifi/fantasy boardgame for my buddy and I - we both come from a Warhammer/40k/HeroQuest/etc. background as kids and it's always been enjoyable but we just don't have the bandwidth for collecting and painting hundreds of miniatures but want to scratch that itch. We played Twilight Struggle and we found it enjoyable but he said it was a little boring thematically (hence something exciting - emphatically not cutesy or mundane theme i.e. Power Grid or Food Chain magnate, for example) (and it was taking forever, so ideally lasting 30-90minutes). I'm aware that Mage Knight/Gloomhaven/Mice & Mystics would be good candidates, but we just don't have the consistency for any kind of campaign/narrative. It's got to be able to support one-shot games. MK seems like it could be an option especially with a solo play mechanic, and the only thing that springs to mind is 'War of the Ring' or 'Inis', but I'm worried the latter may be too far removed from the preceding concepts. Summoner Wars is pretty fun, but the design is kind of wonky, so try the app first. Mage Wars is great but needs you to construct a big-rear end deck. I personally love Shadespire. It's a card-driven skirmish game in the AoS universe, but a warband is only between 3 and 7 figures. It's pretty solid, but suffers from Games Workshop's usual rules writing. If you're looking at War of the Ring, there's also The Battle of Five Armies, which is similar, but focuses on the big battle at the end of the Hobbit movies.

Look into Battlelore 2e. Your playtime restriction is the biggest challenge for this. Edit: it’s a bit abstract but Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation is superb and one of the best games I own - a more sophisticated Stratego. If you can get the recent FFG edition it is insanely portable, has tons of replayability with variants, is cheap, and plays super fast (15-30 if you play both sides). There are a ton of LOTR games, this is the Knizia one. It might be hard to find though. But I recommend it to everyone, it’s the bomb. They're solid games and solid wargames. Wish they'd got more traction. LotR: Confrontation is indeed great. But just a note, there is also another not-Confrontation Knizia LotR game, named Lord of the Rings, which is the FFG co-op one from 2000. That's rather mediocre (though it was fun experience some fifteen years ago playing that with real life props for "pipe" and "pipe weed" which certainly incentivized our fellowship to find them...). And I didn't even know this before checking BGG just now, there's another Knizia Lord of the Rings, this time a not-FFG children's game.

It’s not a war game, but it’s a shame Netrunner is going away. Maybe see if you can find a copy of a core set or two? Either way, when the game gets pulled off shelves forever later this year, the ethical case for proxying cards gets a little simpler.

I know it's not a boardgame, but have you looked at X-wing? It's a good game for beer and pretzels and version 2.0 is coming out soon. You can scale it up or down, be as casual or competitive as you like. Games are 75 minutes or less, and there's fan made co-op content. Also, if you have time for Mage Knight you have time for something like Earth Reborn.

Each of the deluxe expansions focus on one faction from each side each, except for Data & Destiny, which has NBN and three mini-factions for the runners. Picking factions you like and buying a couple of the deluxe boxes is one way to do it. If you're playing casual with one person, Terminal Directive has some campaign elements that apparently are fun. The older expensions - Genesis and Spin cycles - are probably going to be easier to find. Honestly, I'm very casual with the game, you'd probably be better off asking in the proper thread. Make decisions quickly though - stock is drying up at an alarming rate, for obvious reasons.

Cool minis  The game is straightforward as well, although repeat plays will be needed to get the most out of it. It has a zillion expansions which I'm not interested in, as I think the core game play will get better as people know the game. It's gonna take a good number of plays to get bored with what's there.
