I had no problem just grabbing existing OSR stuff / one page dungeons / D&D modules and running them in Torchbearer - stuff like Stonehell ran way better under TB rules than D&D really.

I found the actual Torchbearer adventures published didn't really suit the game that much - you want sprawling, deep exploration places to encourage the expedition feel, not tiny maps where the PCs can get from place to place no problem like Skogenby. I generally combined multiple one-page dungeons into a larger complex and didn't map it on a grid, instead doing a node-based one.

Having just watched Do You Remember Love?, it was deeply refreshing to have the love triangle resolved in a single scene once everything collides because it's a movie and we don't have time for that.

Granted Roy Fokker is somehow worse in that one than before, so I guess some sort of lovely guy balance is maintained.


Nope! It is interesting because it's a notable divergence by A) specifically being anti-crossover, and B) having some slightly different balance / design elements. It was really Carmen Bellaire's baby- a regular Palladium writer in the 2000s who later would have the Rifts Board Game kickstarter that imploded spectacularly.

I'll admit the "crossover" section is probably my least favorite part of Splicers for a lot of reasons

Also I'd say there's plenty of other interesting things to say about Splicers besides that part or the drama the author has been involved with

I remember someone making an interesting high effort Far East class bundle for Dungeon World, but you'd probs need to drop in your own edits to make Dungeon World able to tell the kind of stories you get in L5R.

I've run it, and it's direct predecessor Giant Guardian Generation as well. Between it and the expansion, you can do a lot of interesting stories, both for the pilots and mecha. My biggest complaint is that I found the encounter design to be be a bit lacking in difficulty unless I actually played to win, so I ended up sending more enemies but playing them in a less optimal way. I really like that it has enough crunch to make playing different styles of mecha fell very different, without needing to deal with much math or tracking too many moving parts.

I really wish Greg Stafford became a weeaboo and made a Pendragon like game about the Sengoku period or 3 Kingdoms China. I'd loving love a historical or semi historical trpg on those settings that has as little fantasy as possible

Yeah, I'm in a similar place. I want to run either Battle Century G or Lancer, and I figure running a one shot for both would be a good way to figure out what my friends and I like playing of the two, but I'm also way too lazy to draw that up, haha.

Lancer's tactical combat is very reminiscent of D&D4E in a number of respects, if that's a plus or a minis for you when it comes to making the decision. At the moment in 1.6 enemies are a little bit anemic but not to a majorly detrimental degree and the action economy encourages a lot of full attacking over other utility actions. The forthcoming 1.7 version is slated to address these along with some other stuff, including a revised ruleset for pilot-level play that the writers home will make transitioning between mechs and pilots smoother.

There's an extremely active Lancer discord channel where the writers hang out, and it also has a feedback channel for discussing playtest games, questions and concerns, etc.

To be honest Pendragon would port really well thematically and mechanically to a Three Kingdoms game. You'd want to reskin some things and re-arrange the Virtues/Vices and the Passions but it'd be a fun project.

It's not strictly incorrect, Lancer has a lot of area attacks, some forced movement stuff, and particular range values so I will say that it's not what I would recommend as a Theater Of The Mind Experience, but at least one person's been playing it just with a ruler to move stuff around and no grid or anything. It doesn't have any sort of zone-based combat ranging going on.

The Invid Regent is actually Carl Macek's fault with the abysmally boring Robotech II: The Sentinels aborted series... although the movie made out of the produced material was originally distributed by Palladium.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Seems kind of a tricky issue with mech systems might be pilot skill vs mech construction. I think most systems basically treat pilots as interchangeable, or have generic 'ace pilot' type upgrades for them, though I think some have gone a bit far the other way and give pilots maybe too much focus with out-of-mech abilities. (Which isn't necessarily a bad thing for a war story, though I'm not sure how much mecha anime usually has the pilots caught outside their mechs and having to fight the old fashioned way. I think it happens every now and again in Gundam at least)

Could lend itself to adapting some classic storylines, like the talented but inexperienced obligatory teenager being dropped into a high-performance mech and having to learn as they go, or a superweapon mecha that's too much of a strain on its pilots so only an expert prodigy can even survive using the thing. Or the experienced pilot having to use a machine that's different from what they're used to, whether specialised in a different way or a downright weaker mass-production model. Of course, balancing that kind of thing would be difficult.

Neither Lancer nor BCG do either of those things, which is part of what makes them great.

Eh, it worked for him. I'd consider your approach but I suspect everyone else would be playing under sufferance, which isn't something I want to run to. It's tricky - I know people say if you want to experiment with systems you have to try them, and that people should be sympathetic, but it's difficult when in fact selling a system requires some level of confidence which would be unjustified in the case of experimentation, and people playing out of sympathy aren't a good context.

are there any systems which would handle a Gotenks-style fusion of player characters particularly well? this is more a curiosity thing than anything, I'm wondering how games handle stuff like that.

I think Defensores de Tóquio had a feat for that poo poo and the result let the new character use the highest stat of both characters

Basically it's meant for a character and a NPC that's probably a mount or a mecha or a tandem character that you fight together and it makes you share damage and can only make one attack per turn BUT you use the highest stat of each character on all rolls and can use the combined combat feats like charge attack/multiple attack/terrain advantage from each character so I think that could work for a DBZ style fusion. No rules for both PCs though although you can probably just ask the GM to forgo the "ally" prerequisite feat and instead have both your characters pick it?
