WampaLord posted:They honestly think the government budget functions like their own household budget. If they're going to use a household budget, it's more like "You chose to be homeless, rather than use a credit card with a high line of credit, because you used up all your money on wasteful poo poo so that you'd stop yourself from spending it on healthcare and food (CHIP and food stamps) for your kids. Now you just can't get out of that fiscal straitjacket before you'll need even more healthcare when you get frostbite from sleeping outside tonight. Maybe you could try to rob your grandparents?" This is referring to the linked article in which Bush suggested raiding Social Security to generate revenue as a strategy for stimulating the economy in place of using deficit spending, 17 days before 9/11. https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R40770.pdf seems to be a good one-stop source for the sustainability issue. The deficit is unsustainable when the growth in the debt exceeds the growth in the GDP, so the debt-to-GDP ratio increases. However, that could be true without the sustainability being an issue in the near-term (decades, at least) if the excess is small enough. The debt is unsustainable when financial markets say it is, though when the markets say the deficit is unsustainable, it would probably come extremely rapidly. Our debt-to-GDP ratio is about 100% while Japan's is about 250%, and foreign investors actually increased borrowing during the financial crisis. The way things are, our deficit is still unsustainable, but it would be a long while before the debt-to-GDP ratio would be even as high as Japan's. If this seems wonkish for C-SPAM, it's because I believe that during the upcoming elections, there'll be "our debt-to-GDP ratio is higher than it's been since WWII" arguments from the kind of Democrat who uses the term "credit card hawk" seriously to try to fight for a Balanced Budget Amendment. They'll try to make the issue sound much more dire than it is, and there'll be a need for wonkish counterarguments as airtight as possible. galenanorth fucked around with this message at 12:18 on Jul 1, 2018 |

talking about debt to GDP ratios implies that the debt is paid by taxes. this isn't the case. the debt is paid by just creating money out of thin air if the US actually did try to "pay off" the debt by either cutting spending or raising taxes significantly on consumers, the economy would enter a great depression. taxing rich people might be okay because they aren't using their excess money for productive activity anyways the debt is simply an expression of how much money the federal government has created in the private sector through fiscal spending

I love debating ppl on redditquote:Around our little star there is enough resources to improve the planet below to prosperity we cannot imagine, and construct habitation for trillions of people, all having a quality of life that we cannot dream of. Our destiny is the stars, regardless of our economic policy, but as you said capitalism is great at growing an economy and once we have the infrastructure to get into space quickly and reliably we will have an entire system to build. Once that is done, and building a Dyson Swarm is no small task, there will be countless other stars for us. capitalism works as long as we build a Dyson swarm!

The Isaac Arthur youtube channel is cool. Basically what he's saying is that capitalism is good because it will enable us to exploit resources out in space, but the timeframe for developing space won't guarantee a profitability even in our own lifetimes so there's no investment incentive. Only social programs can work on that timescale.

Yeah if anything the handful of private space companies have proved that the R&D expenses to develop a reliable space launch vehicle are just too high for any one company to bear. Although there's that idea of digging a giant tunnel for a railgun cannon some brain genius came up with for raw material launches. That could probably be done by a private company if there was any demand for it

The rate of profit for anything is space is so marginal, compared to scamming people back on earth, with poo poo like bitcoins. Hence why millions of graphics cards are being burned out doing the equivalent to calculating digits of pie to win a coupon, but we don't have a moon base.

I also like isaac arthur, but it's such a shame that, like most tech nerds, they've bought wholesale into the crypto/musk/sci-fi headspace, and they're not critical aboutly thinking about some things. Though -- there's an idea for a thread, c-spam in space
