How wide is the path out? They walked there so can't be as bad as cave diving paths? And as for not being able to swim, that's normally only a problem when you're trying to stay above water. Just give them all scuba tanks+masks and walk out?

Volcott posted:cavedivinggrimreaper.svg To expound a bit: the danger isn't just about the confined space but also the loss of spatial orientation, the inability to surface if someone goes wrong, a total lack of visibility when dirt gets kicked up, etc., and so on. Experienced divers have died in situations less perilous than this one. Also, there's the bit where we're not talking about healthy adults but kids who've spent the last nine days starving in a soaked cave. Forget about attempting difficult diving feats; they probably aren't stable enough to risk a light jog.

Also, some of the stuff they've moved through is too narrow for a diver wearing an oxygen tank, which would make it incredibly tough to escort a panicked, scared, non-diver through.

The rains and accumulated water also damaged the passages and filled them with debris. What might have been a 3 foot wide passage on the way in could now be a 14 inch wide opening that a person can barely force through. Maybe with the rest clogged with lose mud that could collapse at any moment, too. If you look for "caving squeeze" you'll get some insane videos that will trigger most folks' claustrophobia and those aren't underwater in 0 visibility dragging a scuba tank and a kid.

Yeah, it's going to be down (in order of probability)waiting out the monsoon season, followed by pumping the place dry, then drilling in to get them, and finally using the house atomics to take the top off the mountain. For whatever it's worth, I hope that their coach (or whichever notionally responsible adult got them into this lovely situation) survives to be handed the bill for the rescue effort. e: Maybe if they drugged/sedated folks and then essentially drag an inert object with a full-face respirator through? The whole situation made a lot more sense once I heard that the coach is only 25. I mean, he absolutely should have known better, but that's still within the demographic of people who might be somewhat more likely to do dumb stuff like get stuck in caves.
