The thing about going into consumer debt for a thing is that debt continues to build and build and it can VERY quickly double, triple, etc in size. In fact, it's designed that way. It's specifically formulated to make it as easy as possible for you to wake up one day and suddenly owe many times more than what you initially spent. You doing nothing but living your life normally and waiting will result in you owing a ton more money. Or you save up the cash ahead of time, pay the asking price outright, and then you're done. vv

Yeah, no offense, but spending that much on a non-essential surgery if you can't easily afford it is not wise. I'd postpone it or buy nicer glasses. I know things like not liking your glasses can get to you, but there are worse fates in life.

Skypie posted:You might try looking at some other similar procedures. A guy I work with just had eye surgery but it wasn't Lasik and he said it's helped a lot although the recovery can cause some double vision issues for an extended time while the retina heals. it has way too high a chance of causing permanent damage to your vision and even if it succeeds the effects aren't permanent lasik is a crock

Credit is good to have available in case of a legit emergency as in life- or livelihood--threatening sudden occurrence like you need emergency surgery or your only car you rely on for keeping a job gets broken. If you run it up with consumer debt then you drain that pool or put yourself in a place where something like a broken car will literally ruin your life. It's a bad idea because the system is rugged against you. It's designed to ruin you, kinda like casinos. It all benefits the house in the end.

Looper posted:glasses are insanely attractive, in this bespectacled goon's opinion I often wish I had reason to wear my glasses, but they are really only for reading for long periods and make things blurry at distance. Also I need to get the frame adjusted and nose pads replaced because they are rock hard at this point.

I thought the pendulum had swung around on this issue and the general popular perception is that glasses make you 10% more attractive, on top of people assuming you're more intelligent

There is a massive gulf in personal comfort and confidence between bad glasses and good glasses. I felt awful about my appearance for a while but I got some new glasses a couple months ago and I loving love them. They're both more comfortable and look much better on my face than my old ones. I'm not saying never do Lasik, of course, or that everyone will find glasses they like. But maybe go out glasses shopping and try on a bunch of frames, see if any of them click with her? She can also get free try-on frames through Warby Parker, which is cool because if their frames work for her they're much cheaper glasses than you can get at like LensCrafters or anything like that. It's worth exploring more options before jumping into laser surgery.

Incidentally, I need glasses. If I close my left eye, I can't really read anything unless it's close with my right eye. Also I really really really need to get checked for glaucoma. My dad was being checked for it before he died, and my brother has the early signs of it and has to take eyedrops

I think $4k is a reasonable sum to replace your eyeballs with laser eyes. Who would dare question the cuteness of a laser-eyed goddess? Realtalk though it's a bad idea. If you don't have insurance that will cover it or at least the eye drops, and you don't have a secure form of income right now, and your payment plan is going to stretch out for years, and it's because she doesn't like the way her glasses look (can't comment on contacts myself, could never bring myself to try them), then this is a bad idea. Go with her to a eyewear shop and help her pick out something that you both think looks good, then pay the extra money for the thin lenses or whatever she needs. Again, this helps if you have some sort of insurance but it's a lot better than making a decision that will permanently change her physically (my uncles reported increased sensitivity to light for years after their surgeries) but also strap you with debt for years. And who knows when you'll have a big expense that isn't cosmetic and need that open credit. Now you can tell your fiance that you floated her idea by the Games Chat crew and that we had some reservations. Let us know how it goes.

Yeah it's tough because this is such a personal decision but then also 4000 is a lot of money. Like I would personally think "I could get a pair of really good glasses every year for a decade" on that. I knew someone who got laser surgery, I told her that she looked great in glasses and she agreed, but her family had a history of degenerative eye disease and the surgery would also help from her going blind in old age, but if it were purely aesthetic she wouldn't have done it. Back then I remembered reading an article that was in defense of glasses, I won't link to it now because two decades later it's kind of cringey "middle-aged dude talks about what he finds sexy" but it is still disheartening to see the desire for surgery based on negative self-esteem

I think if I could get away with it without looking like a criminal or drawing attention to myself, I'd definitely just wear a mask around when I go out Just easier that way I guess As far as KCB and the reason for the surgery goes, it's definitely a cosmetic thing but she also feels so distressed about wearing glasses that it feeds into her anxiety and depression and she ends up feeling worse because she doesn't like how she looks in glasses. I hadn't even thought of getting her to go look at and try on different glasses though. I think she'll be reluctant to try that but I'll hopefully be able to convince her to at least..uh..try

You pick five frames and they send them to you, and you just send them back within a week. You can do that over and over and keep trying frames. That way she can try them without having to go to a store or deal with salespeople. Plus their glasses are quite cheap if it turns out they have a frame that she likes.

Though to clarify, she said there there is no interest on the credit until after the 2 years are up or she misses a payment, so that is part of her argument on why she should be able to cover this smoothly and then she can just make payments on time until my disability money comes in at which point I can pay off the rest I just feel like maybe I'm being bad here because this is something she wants and I'm raining on her parade by saying "this doesn't sound like the brightest idea"
