As a narrative, I don't think "chaos" has much purchase in the current political consciousness.

The narrative coming out of the right is centered around "law and order", with the idea that Trump is "enforcing existing laws" on immigration or repealing regulations framed as government overreach. In either case, the narrative is that the government is in control.

The left is pushing the same idea, that the government is in control and is wilfully pushing immoral, inhumane immigration policies and intentionally destroying necessary regulatory framework in favor of corporate profits.

I think the truth is that there is more chaos than either side wants to admit, but that chaos is a direct result of administration incompetence, so while it is called out some on the left, the left really doesn't want the administration to suddenly get more competent at pushing their agenda so that narrative tends to hide in the background.

Yeah, and as someone who has a bit of knowledge of the real Civil War, this kind of denigration of the other side's fighting ability was absolutely prevalent in the run-up to the outbreak of war.

I would argue that we're experiencing a Bleeding Kansas event nationwide already, and that it's only a matter of time until there's a similar massacre somewhere.

Right now, I'm fearful of that crazyass qanon militia in Arizona doing it, but if not them, it'll be some other group.

BrutalistMcDonalds posted:

i dunno but there's this theory out there that "chaos" works to trump's advantage in the midterms -- and maybe it did when he was running for president -- but if i were president i wouldn't want articles about violent clashes in the news. y'know? you hear people say trump is like putin and wants to keep people in this state of anxiety all the time, but it's not like the russian security services are fond of riots breaking out.

I'd say the metaphor falls down pretty quickly with Trump. (With one exception, and Trump is a smoothbrained dumb-dumb who is a beneficiary, but not in any way the cause.)

Putin's mob was quick to realize that governments move slowly, and are very feeble at pushing back at MSM/Social media manipulation, and this was a good place to attack. [Something about the decline in critical thinking skills in the west?] You can also fund chaos by the internet making you stupid principle pretty cheaply. You can also (and this I think is an old propaganda trick) poison information gathering sources through fake news, etc. But as propaganda tactics, (like any sort of tactic) it has limits. In Russia itself, breaking down the rule of law and taking over most info sources was important, as attacking the concept of truth and justice is important to make people accept the perpetual strongman. For a long time chaos tactics were important in trying to keep Ukraine under Russia's thumb, but in the end, these...totally failed. In the 2016 Election, the US fed is as weak and as corrupt as it has ever been, and Putin's mob saw an opportunity to mess with US elections, as Trump was idiotic enough to collude with them. If he lost, the collusion would come out, and the validity of elections would be questioned. If he won, then suddenly the United States has a President that is considered an idiot by all non-US media, and that's a solid a break as you can get for weakening NATO and American Power. The fact that this particular smoothbrain wants to attack America's biggest strengths - its immense economic power - is a bonus.

The one parallel to Putin's tactics is Fox News, which allows a fair bit of the US electorate to remain crazytown bannanapants without any sort of reality check whatsoever, and are thus easily manipulated, because when you are grounded in facts in the real world, even tangentially, you tend you only have some degree of freedom of manipulation - beyond a limit it just won't fly.

As for chaos, I think it's the only thing you can think as unusual if you don't look back on American history, where chaos was the norm rather than the exception.

And probable. Just look at the Qanon brokebrain militia combing through that "immigrant rape camp" (actually just a homeless camp). Hop, skip and a jump to blaming the neighbors as complicit and breaking into their houses like that patriot patrol a few years back.

Putting aside the fact that a huge number of Americans are just generically fat, it's not surprising that physically unable people would be drawn to guns and such, since they are violent and intimidating without requiring any effort on the part of the holder. It's a 9mm six pack.
