I don't care about what other people prefer in games but I personally skip all story and exposition in almost every game. I almost exclusively look for gameplay loops and mechanics that I like and really do not care about backstory, lore or worldbuilding. It's only a problem when the industry starts to sacrifice gameplay for Story because terrible games like Last of Us sell well due to a large majority of gamers preferring to have 40 hour movies they can get emotionally invested in with gameplay being completely secondary.

Sometimes he gets a unique voice over.

Gameplay and story are both capable of ruining a game depending on how badly they are implemented and how much you're forced to use that bad implementation. A visual novel can be a great game even though you're only picking options at a menu, and a game that has no story whatsoever can be great based purely on the strength of its gameplay. Likewise giving an otherwise good game a terrible story that you cannot skip and are forced to deal with makes the game worse, and putting ridiculous systems in that same visual novel that complicate the game without making it any more fun makes the game worse. You have both options in Nights: Journey of Dreams, which sucks balls overall. The game has the same number of stages that play like the first game as the first game had, but between each of those you gotta play some incredibly bad bullshit stages just to access those good stages. Like who the gently caress cares I wanna play the good ones, why do this? Well it pads out the game with bad gameplay and bad story, both of which you can't skip. Which is worse? I dunno I just wanted to play more of the same poo poo from the Saturn. Is there a worse sequel

I watched a playthrough of that Detroit game and it had its moments. Androids wanting freedom after gaining sentience is played out, but there were some neat bits of androids' effect on the economy and people projecting onto them when they don't have sentience, and the buddy cop story was cute

Skipping past all the dialog and story strikes me as childish. What really gets me is when people say "If I wanted a story I'd read a book!" which is total bullshit. Those people don't ever read books. They should be thankful that they make stories for their level of comprehension and helpfully include them in the videogames.
