the headline says the trend is going up but it appears fairly slight. overall these researchers think 2017 represents a "small to moderate increase" while 2018 is going to see drops based on forecasts + preliminary data.



what's interesting is that things really picked up in the 1990s and spiked dramatically after 9/11 (targeting muslims and those perceived to be), but the overall trend since has been on the decline. there was a trump "surge" in november 2016 that occurred in the days after the election. anti-semitic incidents have also gone up a lot. most years they would hover between 800 and 1,200 -- but in 2017 they spiked to 2,000. that's the alt-right at work. "one of the worst years in four decades" in anti-semitism. also noteworthy that the trump spike basically matched a "normal" month in a bush year and the 1990s.



the report also notes that hate crime hoaxes, while they do happen, are statistically insignificant.

also, another trend is more attacks on transgender people, notably in los angeles. these can be extremely violent.

interesting thing is that texas cities report few hate crimes relative to other large cities. as an aside, i was once subjected to anti-semitic abuse in san antonio by a group of guys passing in a car. i am not jewish.

have gotten the anti-gay treatment a few times but never violently, fortunately. less of a thing now it feels to me.

Most of the harassment I have gotten is from random guys in pick up trucks. Here in Calgary I had some guy shouting about how he liked my legs. I'm nearly 50 so that was kind of flattering--but he was savagely razzed by his buddy when a dude yelled "thanks!"

Recently I had a confrontation with a guy who was really trying to get a rise out of me by calling me everything he could think of. My reaction was simply "OK I'm a bitch rear end pussy. Yeah you could probably give me a real reason to call the cops. But could you please just leave?" I mean names never got much of a rise out of me, and I've had a lot of non violence training, but especially now that I am so goddamned old who gives a poo poo. (But note to self, don't needlessly escallate a tweeker with prison facial tattoos)
