Baby Boomers took full advantage of organized labor, livable wages, and a strong (for America) social safety net and spent their prime years dissolving it for all future generations.

I have these discussions all the time with my boomer coworkers. They're completely incapable of understanding that wages have not gone up to support cost of living. I had an incredibly cheap for the area townhouse when I lived in CT and my rent was 60% of my income at its best, and 110% at its worst. My rent here started at 50% of my income and has since dropped down to 25% because I make a fuckload of money now, but now I'm chipping away at the 70k in debt I have. They literally think that you can get a part time job over the summer and pay for school, and get any job to afford a house, get married, and have a family by the time you're 30.

Same except officers my age or younger who don’t seem to realize we get generous tax-free BAH and subsidized tons-o-stuff. Extra good when the response is everyone should be in the military. BRB recruiting 40+ million young people so I don’t have to pay for higher wages or social safety nets.

I read the GIP thread about enlisting and it convinced me not to. That enlisting at the age of 27 with a bachelors was stupid. So I ignored all the recruiters call and switched to studying for IT exams instead. Seems like it was a good choice, thanks GIP! GiP success story right here.

I took night courses to study IT, got a few certs , now I work as a contractor making ok but not great money but my benefits are good, it’s in the DoD so funding will never be an issue, and I’m happily married. I often wonder what my life would have been like if I signed that contract (6 years!) and gone into the Navy enlisted. Also this thread is far more sane than the D&D one.

He's absolutely hosed on the civil case front, but you loving know he only has that truck and a single wide trailer/meth lab though.

One of my favorites is my best friend in Boston. He's just hitting his early 30s, married 4 years ago. He and his wife bought a very small house in a rapidly gentrifying part of Boston and could do so only with the help of their parents on the downpayment. He's a plumber and his wife is some kind of secretary. They have almost no savings and no disposable income and are trying to find ways to get out of the city as soon as they both can. Also my friend had an emergency kidney condition and despite insurance still owes $20-30k in expenses after a prolonged hospital stay. Their parents give them poo poo constantly for not having kids / just had a huge blowup with them because they decided they won't be having kids (entirely due to finances). Meanwhile his dad is retiring from his lifetime job as a butcher, his mom is a homemaker and they're living off social security and the fact that they sold the house they bought for $100k in 1992 for ~800k last year. edit: On the upsides of the southern racist bullshit: https://twitter.com/exavierpope/status/1015242202149281792 That Works fucked around with this message at 18:27 on Jul 6, 2018 |
