Later on I was attacked by a level ?? basilisk that normally would have killed me. But it just kind of stopped mid-air inches from Gerald. And just floated there. Until I beat it to death.


Oh and a while ago this happened;

All I did was try to open a locked door and Gerald just kind of folded up like that. For about a minute afterwards he squat-walked on thin air.

I've been playing Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters and I don't know where people are getting that the game is bad. The constructs are really fun to use and fluid as hell, especially given that you can have 8 at a time equipped and modify your combo by pulling one out at any time as long as you have the energy, like mid combo I've been swatting energy balls away by just pulling out my baseball bat construct then resuming with other moves. The bat also knocks enemies away at the same time, making for great crowd control. There is also a decent amount of enemy variety and many ways to deal with their poo poo.

One thing I liked about Doom 2016 is that it started out presenting Hell as just another dimension and the demons as just extradimensional entities that just happen to resemble traditional ideas of demons, which is a major pet peeve of mine when stories about supernatural creatures pull that kind of thing.

But then as you get deeper into the game and find more audio logs you realize that that’s just the story told to the lower-level employees of the company and that they actually are literal demons in the religious sense. It’s not something that’s spelled out explicitly but as you move deeper into the facility the audio logs gradually start dropping the scientific language and start talking in more supernatural terms, complete with pentagrams, lost souls, and dark rituals.

And his assistant asks, "Do... do you think they'll be able to stop [player]?" And Malak says, "Of course not! But it will slow him/her down!" etc

I've said it before, but games always get kudos from me when bad guys acknowledge the threat you pose.

I never managed to finish it because it's attributes system is some lovecraftian horror poo poo, but I always appreciated how the villains in Vagrant Story are absolutely making GBS threads themselves in terror everytime you beat one of the bosses. I think at one time they summon an ancient dragon or wyvern of some sort and after you defeat it there's this cutscene where one of them is going "It wasn't supposed to turn out like this, you didn't tell me we were going against a goddamn titan!"

Theres basically one scene everyone remembers because it is both unbelievably brutal and the gameplay section its attached to is a complete gameplay shift and hard to discern what youre supposed to be doing as fast as the game wants before brutal death trigger. From that point on i dont even know if there are even any other custom game over scenes. Which is a real shame since it taints all discussion of a game that otherwise is genuinely the story of a woman learning to be the greatest killer of all time in the name of destroying anti-women ideological systems.

The fifth World of Warcraft Expansion involves a bunch of time travel parallel universe bullshit, and the last boss is Archimonde, a demon lord who was killed in the final mission of Warcraft 3, where he was indestructible on the battlefield. Unlike some previous fights with extremely powerful lore characters in WoW, or how he was defeated in Warcraft 3, there's no other extremely powerful NPC empowering you or summoning a huge attack against him. You just hit him until he dies. An entire army couldn't do that in Warcraft 3.

As he dies, he sends a past version of Gul'dan, a powerful warlock who nonetheless has nothing on Archimonde, to the current version of Azeroth, where he becomes the last boss of a raid of the Legion expansion.

On the lead up to Legion, they release an audio drama, where Khadgar, a big important mage NPC who was something like the nemesis to both of his versions, hunts down Gul'dan. Gul'dan accomplishes his task, summons the Legion to Azeroth, and Khadghar has to run. Gul'dan celebrates, but he has the fearful realization that the loot-crazed murderhobos who killed Archimonde are going to be coming for him now.

I've just beaten Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters. It was a bit short, but it felt long enough to support and explore all the mechanics and it was a lot of fun. It even had a fairly interesting plot that was totally removed from that of the movie. There were a lot of variety in Constructs to fight with, and the ability to equip 2/3rds of them at once made them easy to use on the fly. It was a really fun game and I really enjoyed it. Don't know why people claim it's a bad game. Also Sinestro stays good for the entire game. That's a record.

One major tech problem though - rather than lag when too much poo poo is going on on screen, it goes very lo-res for a bit. Doesn't happen often, only happened about 2-3 times in the entire playthrough and only for a few seconds.

The first teaser for Rise Of The Tomb Raider was Lara getting therapy for what happened in the reboot but I guess at some point between that and the actual release someone said "Wait, what if she was just really good at killing people?" and now she's a murder machine

People like to throw around the term "ludonarrative dissonance" with the new Tomb Raider series but I don't really see why, Lara's bodycount is 100% canonical.

I think it's less "Lara wouldn't possibly kill that many people" and more "Wait, how many people are in this super secret Christian paramilitary cult?" There can't possibly be that many combat ready mercenaries and soldiers finding their way to the island in 2013 and the mountains in Rise. It would be a logistical nightmare!

I'd still say it's 100% canon that Lara killed every last one of them that she came across, though.

TR2013's cold open does have some weird torture porn elements but it quickly switches gears to a balls-out action romp where Lara blows up or sets fire to at least 50% of the island and its inhabitants.

Yeah the complaints aren't so much that Lara's actions don't match the story as that there's only about 10 minutes between being traumatized by the one murder she committed to save her own life and being Rambo.

To be fair, it repulses her in story not so much because she is horrified at taking a life as much as she is horrified that she found it cathartic and good. Theres basically no ludo-narrative dissonance in Tomb Raider; the main character never killed because she was terrified of it, turns out her enemies unwitingly unleashed a goddess of destruction trying appease a different one and suddenly “Oh poo poo she has a grenade launcher!” Is like the least of their problems when facing her

As Barudak mentions, this is an explicit plot point which Lara directly talks about. It escalates in the sequel where it's implied she's lying to herself and is using conspiracies and treasure hunting as an elaborate self-delusion to indulge her killings.

I like that the upcoming game appears to be leaning more into the idea that hey, maybe Lara just enjoys killing people.

This reminds me of the best character in Iconoclasts, a villain whose repeated refrain is "Look, this person right here is causing no end of problems, I have a gun, just let me shoot her."

Wanting the character to survive is different than making them want the players to view Lara as a sister or girlfriend to protect. This is not a statement that would ever be made about a character like Nathan Drake or Solid Snake.

The original Max Payne had the “what do you mean he’s unstoppable” bit in the last level. It ruled.

My favorite part of Max Payne 2 (a game I treasure dearly) is early on when you go visit the new bar of a friendly character from the first game who is being attacked by a mobster, also from the first game.

Not only does the good guy melodramatically announce your arrival over the PA as if you were an angel of death ("... with NYPD's biggest mobster body count, EVER!"), when the bad guy realizes it's you he immediately just starts yelling "poo poo, poo poo, poo poo!" and runs away.

It's the best game :allears:
