drat, forgot that those kind of statehood/partition referendums just ask congress to ultimately pass a bill, so dems would need to pull all that poo poo off well before the 2040 date that ornstein threw out there. my previous post was based off the assumption that dems could add those senate seats just by controlling state-level government in urban and densely populated blue states. if dems have to control the senate anyways, there are prob more elegant solutions than to just add more and more states.

gradenko_2000 posted:like the entire project of the Republicans has been to be in power permanently. They even thought they had it with Reagan going into HW Bush OK, but on the other hand, we'll regularly say the Dems hosed up for assuming that Clinton would win in 2016, or that otherwise various measures that could be easily undone by GOP victories didn't matter. Not doing this might have enabled "planning on what happens when the pendulum swings back the other way." edit: whoops, this is from way back.

comedyblissoption posted:American wages don't have to decline for immigrants (legal or otherwise) to have an adverse affect on american laborers' aggregate economic interest in a capitalist context. Wages stagnating while workers' productivity keeps increasing is an adverse effect. I meant to say that the study authors referenced by this page's Table 2, were examining the impact of immigration on wages, not whether wages declined during the period of immigration. I'm assuming the study authors, who looked at 1990+, took the possibility of a labor shortage into account. Your point still makes intuitive sense to me, though. Could you offer a citation? I also found a Politifact article that discusses the "does immigration decrease wages for native workers" question in depth. I found a paper from the Levy Institute of the Bard College which examines unemployment by comparing immigration rates across states, and they found that it didn't have any impact on unemployment, but it significantly increased the percentage leaving the labor force among those with a high school diploma or less education (Table 2) while decreasing it for those with some college or more, averaging out to a 0.4% increase in leaving the labor force. By age, 15-24 and 65+ were the demographics most affected. The author notes that most academic literature suggests that immigration does not strongly affect wages, but the increase could be driven either by an actual decline in wages or a false expectation of a decline in wages. To be clear, I think that regardless of the economic impact, anyone who sets foot over the border should be legally allowed to stay, granted permanent residency after staying some amount of time like a year, and then American citizenship upon passing an American citizenship test.
